I know there's an existing Welling as Superman thread and if you must merge these then fine, but I figured this topic will liekly entail a lengthy discussion with arguments from 2004 and 2007 rehashed ad nauseum.

Clint Morris over at Moviehole has spent a bit of time trying to verify the rumors ran by Geektyrant about Christopher Nolan's bro Jonathan helming the upcoming Superman project which Chris is involved with. Apparently a source has revealed a few things...

Late this afternoon I hopped on the phone with a contact who shed some light on the J. Nolan rumours.

"You know, some of that is true", my very reliable* contact, said ."Jonathan Nolan is not onboard yet, but it looks like he will get the job. Jonah wants to direct, Chris wants to land him that gig, WB doesn't want to upset Chris. That said, it is far from a done deal -- but with Chris and Emma producing, the odds are with Jonah"

"Also, it is a TV star that they're looking at for the lead - but, despite what that article says, I don't believe anyone has actually tested." (He/She has heard nothing of Zachary Levi being considered).

So there you have it, Nolan is the frontrunner for the job.
Sorry? What? Oh, you want to know which "TV star" is currently atop of the WB wishlist?
Says our insider, "[He's a] popular TV actor that no one is thinking of, but everyone will be thrilled with if he pulls on the blue tights"

So, they have their Supers, he's a tv actor, you know who it is, but we can't? Mmmmm. He goes on to say Your first guess is likely the right one. I'm getting a terrible Tom Welling feeling. But that would never happen.. would it? Anyway Morris then says that nothing is set in stone, and WB just have their favorite for the role. Their source also says...

"This Superman is neither a reboot or a sequel. It's just a Superman film. The basic elements of the storyline are: BIG action, BIG set-pieces, witty dialogue, playful romance, a light-hearted feelgood mood juxtaposed with derring-do and danger, top-notch cast, epic feel, sci-fi background (sounds a little like Donner, right?) BUT with some sort of huge twist on the legend."

Interesting info. A TV actor may be at the WB wish list, but doesn't it come down to what both Nolan brothers want? I don't think WB would go against their wishes in terms of casting...

I think this is the most important quote mentioned if they do decide to go with Welling. If its just Superman and no origin. Welling would work perfect...The Smallville fans would get him as Supes. The non-Smallville (especially Smallville canon)fans would not be affected by his Smallville origins.

On the good chance that it's not Tom Welling being hinted at here --- what other TV actor could they mean that would be fairly well known and fit the Superman mold?

I can't think of any, but am sure they're are shows out there I am just not familar with --- anyone have any guesses?

Matthew Bomer. He's on the show White Collar. I believe he tried out for Superman during Superman Returns auditions. He would make a fantastic Clark Kent/Superman IMO.

^eh. I agree that facially I think he is perfect for Superman. It's just his build/stature where he doesn't fit IMO.

I think those Japanese Toyota commericals he was in as Supes displayed that even more. But that has been debated to death in the Supes forum.

I really like White Collar by-the-way. Didn't so much at first, but it's grown on me.

He's a TV actor, but he's not really popular or going to "excite everyone." Nor would he be anyone's first guess. Most people who dont follow White Collar or remember the old Superman Returns casting wars would have any clue who he is.

My first thought was if not Welling then maybe Henry Cavill, now that he's done with The Tudors. But then again, he's not really "well known" either.

Honestly, I've been through the original casting wars of 2004 and the whole JLA/IESB debacle so I'm going to be skeptical until I see Welling in suit on a movie screen, but the "your first guess is likely the right one" line really makes it hard to think the "source" ISN'T talking about Welling.

I was very skepticle that it was Tom Welling they were talking about untill I read this:

Our first guess would infact, naturally be Tom Welling, given that he's a tv star, stars as Clark Kent on Smallville, has said in this article to be someone we would be thrilled with to see don the tights, something Welling fans definitly would be, including me. Now obviously even though it sounds obvious, we could be way off. Either way, speculating is fun :)

While I agree this seems like it could be a hint at TW and the film being a different animal than the show --- can't help but think this would be a long shot.

And would anyone think it weird to have Tom, but not Erica or even Michael R. in their respective roles?

Definitley, but it's not exactly unprecdented. Kenneth Branagh played Hamlet for years on stage and then was taken for the title role in a film back in the 1990's with a completely different cast around him.

RIGHT, damn, I had forgotten about that one. Could it...be? I mean, unless this guy was just talking ****, then that particular description does lean towards Welling.
I mean, who the hell else would people love to see put on the tights, that's a popular-tv star more than Welling?'

Damned, just when I think it's over, it starts right back up again. it's great, isn't it. Brings back memories.

Hmm. Wasn't Tom Welling the first pick for Superman returns, but he turned it down because of the fact that Smallville would have had to end?
That's why they went with Brandon Routh.

I'm certain he was at least close to being the first choice.

I would like to see Tom as Superman, whether it's on Smallville or a movie. Or hopefully both.

Bomer is too short, IMO. Plus, his gig is pretty full-time I would think. The White Collar series order is only 13 episodes at a time, but he may not be available for the length of time needed for a major tentpole action feature where shoot schedules can run about 5 or 6 months...

That wording makes it seem they're talking about Tom, but I'm with you: I'm not going to hold my breath on this one.

My heart got broken in 2004, I didn't ever let it get that far with the JLA debacle, but I could see Tom doing it this time.

What if, in return for consideration of his Pilot for Hellcats (nee Cheer) and signing on for the 10th season, they said, 'we're going to need you in tights for a few features...'

I can see that being a string attached to his deal, but I guess we'll see.

I certainly won't hold my breath, but if this works out I will be probably one of the happiest fans on the face of the earth.

As much as I would hate to say it would it not make sense for the WB to pretty much just do Smallville Universeish type movies but with Clark fully as Superman ? Since they can not use any origin story fans are familiar with due to the legal stuff & Smallville has its origin out of the way & with so much of the DC Universe in Smallville cast already it would be easier & probably cheaper to just use the Smallville Universe on the Big Screen

They must be flipping their lids over at the Superman forum that the Welling as Supes talk in back. :D

Man everytime I think I'm out....they pull me back in!!!

It's like clockwork, every 3 summers. 2004, 2007, 2010.....

Maybe the 3rd time's the charm and the stars have aligned since WB can't do an origin film of any kind and needs an established actor.

That said, if this is anything like the past few times, there will be a conflicting report that rules out Welling by about 3 PM tomorrow from either Steve Younis at SMHP (who will call Al Gough LOL) or one of those other film site clowns.

You know, I really never thought I'd see the likes of threads like this again, where we'd be discussing if Welling will suit up for the movies.
It really brings back some fond memories.

But, does anyone know the time table for the new reboot? Just when are he supposed to start filming? Wasn't the release date winter 2012 or something. Gives Welling plenty of time to complete smallville and head straight for the movie.

the reason I can see it working this time is because, unlike the last two times, Smallville is actually finished after this season.

that with the fact that WB can't do an origin story and Smallville's is already complete, I'd say there's a better shot of it happening this time around, especially since, you know, "3rd time's the charm" and all that

You guys are really grasping at straws on this one.

But the end result of all this will amuse me, and will be incredibly familiar.

That's a different tone of voice over at this section huh?:whatever:
Weren't you the one just calling people who've brought up Welling for superman in the past "Dumb"?

Haha. :D

This doesn't mean much though, I mean, Tom was always a or the favourite, but ultimately it just didn't happen.

We'll see this time around.

you really think that?

it's not a secret there were A LOT more factors getting in the way in the past that they are more than clear of now

I WOULD tend to agree with you, but this is a completley different scenario now
