Hitman

So word is that Hitman is seeing this type of release because Square Enix as a whole was initially in doubt of how successful the current gen systems would become, and that they were trying to capitalize on making money off of games that weren't yet finished.

This is all according to Jim Sterling, who first reported on this back in 2013. Basically, SE wanted all their games to be Online Only.

I'd post his video about this, but there's foul language, but you can find it on YouTube.

Eh I wouldn't take his word without a major pinch of salt. He's pretty much the whiney gamer personified, big, fat, loud, and salty mouthed.

That just sounds like him trying to create a controversy where none exists, which is pretty much his MO. I mean i get it, im not a fan of the episodic structure as well, but fact is we are only whining because its Hitman. TellTale does this with every game and we don't say a thing. Also, as most here intend to do, pass on the game until its released in full. No ones making you buy it day one.

I just find it interesting considering that Hitman and the Final Fantasy 7 remake are basically doing the same thing, from what we've heard.

He claims that Just cause 3 was a mess because it was Online only at first, but the story was tacked on last minute. But if that's the case, why wasn't Rise of the Tomb Raider affected? Unless Microsoft intervened and asked that it be a full game from the start. But would Microsoft even be allowed to have their hand in the cookie jar like that?

I love the TellTale games and enjoy their episodic release structure, but I'll be waiting for the full version of Hitman before I play it. With TellTale it works because they structure the story that way, and the gameplay is much more akin to a TV show than the majority of video games -cliff hangers, specific scenes, etc. With a game like Hitman, where you are working your way through levels like most other games, I don't see the point.

what's ironic is this is why it doesnt work in TTG for me. With a tv show, you get an episode almost every week and with the advent of Netflix, almost instantaneous. In TTG games, I have to wait till they are all done before I touch them bc the inconsistent nature at which they are released hurt it. For such story driven content, I forget what happened and what i did between episodes if I go by their release schedule, so that ruins the game experience for me. I have to experience it all at once to get the full effect. I think an episodic content would actually work better with games that arent heavily reliant on story. I think it could work with something like this but its a AAA game and gamers arent used to the mentality of breaking something like this up

that makes no sense. Its 2016. SE knows how well the consoles are doing and they just adjusted their plans for this game to go fully episodic. Even if that were the case initially, they could have adjusted those plans to go with a more traditional release now with all the facts of how they are actually doing. Besides Hitman was officially announced this past E3, well over a year after the consoles came out, so SE knew they were selling well. Its not like a shortsighted decision that EA made prematurely with Titanfall and X1 back in 2012 or 2013, before anyone saw how the X1 and PS4 would do

SE puts out a ton of games. Since this gen started, only Hitman and FF7R are announced to be episodic so I dont think there is any data to support a pattern

Yea, i mean hell, anythings possible. I wouldn't put it past SE.

I think the difference between RotTR and Hitman, is Hitman is easier to "episode" off. Its not one cohesive world the likes of TR, it has individual levels or stages. You can release each mission or whatever you want to call it and not have it mess with the flow of the game, maybe the story gets broken up, but the gameplay itself doesnt. Each stage is pretty much independent from one another.

I pretty much agree with everything you've said. Im hoping this will keep to a solid release schedule, unlike the TT games where its more akin to "yea you'll get episode 2....sometime in a few months"....but im not holding my breath.

I can appreciate that. I wouldn't call them AAA games, that seems like a bit of a stretch, but I get the desire to wait. I feel like if their release structure was more consistent then the episodes would work a lot better. As it is they develop the episodes while people are waiting for them, which is a kind of Marvel/DC style of publishing (and one I don't agree with).

I do disagree that the episode style could work better for games that aren't reliant on story, but then it depends how you craft the story. In any case the option to wait for everything to be released is always an option, and often (due in large part to the points you bring up) the better one.

Square Enix and Io Interactive have released a new trailer for Hitman, introducing the game’s “world of assassination,” a world where “secret deals and bloody murder decides who holds power” and “agencies such as the ICA work in the shadows to bring balance to the power struggle.”

You can guarantee access to the beta by pre-ordering the Full Experience, Intro Pack or Collector’s Edition, which we previously detailed. Preordered the CE from Amazon. Got a nice discount for being a prime member.

Dude... That Prime discount is awesome. I paid 47 bucks (each) for the Division and Uncharted 4..

I wanted to go digital this gen but that pricing can't be topped.

I still go digital regardless of price, but yea that prime discount it's epic. I got the best of both worlds here as the collectors edition is coming with the digital version of the game and after that prime discount, it's like almost 40 bux less. Pretty damn awesome.

Hey Pat, just want to hear your thoughts on what has been shown so far from the Beta.

Completely forgot about the beta today. Thankfully can and will catch the replay...

Also a little inspiration from Bourne? :oldrazz:

Iv actually been playing the beta. Even though im getting the CE for my X1, I got a buddy to hook me up with a PS4 beta code.

Theres not much to say. Its HITMAN at its absolute finest. The game has that perfected, smooth gameplay from Absolution, with level design and layout from Blood Money. Its absolutely clear they went in to this game saying, 'ok what did people love about Blood Money and what did people love about Absolution' and they just combined the two. Theres so many options in each level, its almost overwhelming, but thats what keeps ya coming back. I can not wait to see some of these 'real' levels. Assuming they're good, it'll be easy to say that HITMAN will raise the bar for the series.

Wow, that's great to hear. I haven't sat down to watch a full walkthrough of the Beta yet, so most of my feelings have come from just a visual standpoint, and it kinda leaves much to be desired graphically. But then again, that could just be the fact that Youtube videos are less compressed and never truly 1080p.

But other than that, my only exposure has been Absolution. I tried to go back and play the other games, but just couldn't get into them because of the controls, but I've heard great things. But just in comparison to Absolution, I really liked the game, and I felt like the levels had many options, which is never a bad thing. As long as it's more of the same, I don't mind, and I definitely love when they give you challenges or things to unlock based on how differently you play a mission each time.

I haven't pre-ordered the game, partially because I don't have as much time to play as I'd like, and also because the Division is coming out soon and that's my next big game purchase, and if I play Hitman, I'm going to want the complete experience. But it sounds good so far, so I think I'll definitely be picking it up once it's all available.

Visually it's fine. You're just watching a bad stream. No one in their right might could think this is a bad looking game. But yea, if you liked Absolution, but couldn't get into the other games because of how dated they were, then this game is going to be perfect for u. Like I said, it's blending the best of Bloody Money(and the games before it) and Absolution.

It's good to hear the game is good. Too bad it's still being released in such an odd way.

I still hate the release cycle, but it's really not that odd. It's just odd to see such a "premier AAA" title being released this way. But no one says anything when Tell Tale releases their games in episodes and tbh, Hitman is much better suited to an episodic release due to the fact story isn't nearly as big a focus as the individual missions the game is made up of.

Still hoping "season 2" just released all at once though because I actually love the stories in these games.

My only problem is that when this game does well we may end up with many games not suited to episodic releases starting to do it more often.

Good to hear, glad they haven't totally ditched Absolution and kept the things that worked from it.

Also good to hear its a good game more like classic Hitman at least. Even if I dont get it in the current state on release it sounds like it will be worth picking up at later date.

Yea it's absolutely going to be worth picking up. Like I said, it's Hitman at its purest. I just can't wait to see some of these levels that'll be in the final game. What they've shown so far is incredible so I can't wait to see the other locations

Yeah as big a Hitman fan I am, I'm still gonna wait until the physical release which will have everything comes out. I never was too crazy about the "episode" stuff some developers have been doing lately.
