I'm looking into picking up these series and was wondering which to get first. Both sound equally entertaining.

I'm an ultimate universe reader so any info on which series is the better to start with would be great.

The general consensus, I believe, is that Civil War is the more entertaining of the two. More action, more twists, more turns, etc etc. Especially if you're into the Ultimate Universe; Mark Millar is the writer, and he's the guy who kicked off both the Ultimates and Ultimate X-Men.

Wow, like choosing between having a fork in the eye and a kick in the nuts with a steel toed boot.

Any chance for a neither option?

I guess for continuity's sake go with House of M. It happened first.

The guy never asked which one was better, just which one he should get first. HoM came first, so why not start there?

I wouldn't start anything with House of M, regardless of whether it came first or not. Just skip it entirely; you will have missed absolutely nothing that wikipedia can't tell you.

Every bad habit that Bendis has is pretty much represented in this story.

Civil War

Decimation is the only remotely important part of House of M.

Oh, I thought you were saying that House of M should be read first 'cause it has lots of Bendis' faults or something.

House of M.

I like Civil War, but it has some out-of-character writing and its effects on the Marvel Universe were annoying.

House of M gets mentioned a couple of times in Civil War, but you can get away with not reading it just by knowing that it reduced the mutant population thanks to Wanda Maximoff and that only a few of the people involved in it remembered it. If your cup of tea is The Ultimateverse then you should probably go with Civil War and then back track to HoM.

Do this, just pick up the X-Factor TPB and read the recap page. That's all you need to know for House of M.

Save your money for the Ultimates 2 HC instead.
