It's complicated.
I participated and qualified for a school program 3 years ago that recruited students for manufacturing internships with major automotive companies.
I interviewed with Chrysler, General Motors, American Axle, and Ford Motor Company. I bombed almost every interview except the one for Ford--they hired me as an intern in 2008 for the summer. I did a great job and they brought me in again in 2009--they liked me again and brought me back this summer.
I'll be graduating (finally) in 3 weeks and my internship will be over in about 7 weeks, so now I'm scrambling to shoot out as many resumes and applications as possible so that once I start some grad school classes and my internship ends, I can smoothly keeping working.
I've been getting offers from Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Raytheon--so, fingers crossed! I'm also trying to get back into my former job with the federal government--It was really cool. I was traveling all over the country. The pay was kinda meh, but the benefits are awesome and the work is very satisfying.
I got the government job simply by being the best candidate during the interview process. To qualify as part of the candidate pool, you simply had to be taking at least 2 classes at an accredited institution, be a U.S. citizen, and have a good GPA and whatever..
