My sister got a new puppy which she really didn't need, and she left today for her 3rd round of Chemotherapy. Leaving her dog here. The second she left all it has been doing is barking. And it literally won't stop. I've tried feeding it, petting it, and everything. I'm seriously just about to throw its ass outside and say to hell with it.

You should establish authority over the dog. Then it will feel protected by your presence. It's upset because it's 'mother' is absent.

Be stern with it, make it sit next to you, calmy tell it off whenever it barks. You don't have to shout, just be authoritive.

Have you tried giving him a chew toy and his on little space? I also think if you put on soft music it might drown out the outside sounds he is hearing. He could also be feeling your tension. Relax! :D

My subtle approach to this problem has always been to scream and chase them around the house.

Definitely be authoritative. Don't yell, just use a commanding voice like a prison guard would. Make sure it's looking at you while you speak, don't be afraid to hold it's head so it looks directly at you while you say something simple like "stop" or "quiet". It will sink in eventually.

The radio in the background works like a charm. I have had a radio station playing for my dog since he was a puppy. The ambiance does wonders so they're not spooked by a car door slamming, ect.

Trust me, it pays off big time if you work a lot with the dog. I'm on my PC remotely watching my dog on my webcam sleep in my apartment. He literally hasn't moved in 4 hours from his bed and I live across the street from a rail yard with dump trucks and heavy machinery going all day long.

Everyones ideas are great but they aren't going to help him today.

I suggest cuddling the puppy, treat it like a little baby.

Puppy's like to be close to people, it reminds them of their mothers/brothers/sisters

**** it, I told my sisters boyfriend to come get it.

Out of my hands.

Hey Bamf, be a mod for once and lock this thread. jk

But really.

My sister, who has inoperable cancer, went in for chemotherapy. At the hospital. Where dogs aren't allowed.

I get that part of the story. What confused me is you said your sister who is going through chemotherapy doesn't need a puppy.

Considering it's his sister, he has more knowledge and insight of the circumstances than you do.

Ok, a sure fire way to get the dog to stop barking, ...every time it is barking, walk up to it, pet it as normal on the head, but have a small bottle of water handy, while you are petting it with one hand, pour the bottle of water down it's nostrils, it will have to breathe through it's mouth and stop barking.
rinse and repeat and pour water down it's nostrils.

seriously though, I hope your sister gets better soon.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure she got it to make her happy during the situation she's in.
