Superman Returns How do you compare the hype to other summer blockbusters?

spidermans hype didnt kick in till april, to whoever said it did is totally off.

Before Spider-Man opened, pretty much everybody was saying SW Episode II was going to beat it by a landslide. The box office experts didn´t guess even close to its record-breaking opening.

Look, WE all know about SR and we have done for 2 years. Anybody that follows movie/sci-fi/comic book news does. However, your average guy/girl-in-the-street will likely know next to nothing about this Superman flick until Routh and Spacey appear on talk shows and gossip magazines/tabloids print reviews. That's just the way it is.

Hype around Spider-Man was huge but, even then, a lot of general folk I know weren't aware of it until its month of release.

Bottom line is, EVERYBODY will be aware of this film by the time of its release. Word of mouth will then determine eventual box office figures.

Not quite the buzz of Spidey or SW. I'm looking forward to it, but it's not quite the hypefest as those two (or LOTR or Potter).

I see the attempts to make Hype, but I'm not really hearing much talk about it. Its not really becoming the "watercooler topic" or anything. I've encountered practically no discussion of the movie outside of this board/

Funny thing is, I showed a couple of my friends the first full trailer, and they were like, "Meh."

I know the film will be pretty good (or at least I hope it wil be), but the hype is not even comparable to any of the major franchises I mentioned above.

Titanic hardly received enormously positive buzz before its release - and look what happened there!

There's no way that SR will earn anything less than $250 million (and that's just in the US). Any more is down to word-of-mouth.

You guys seem to forget that the "average" moviegoer is typically less "hyped" than all of us are. Why would Joe Public rave about a Superman film if he's not a fan? He will check out reviews, listen to opinions and then probably see the film anyway... because it's a huge blockbuster release with amazing effects!

In the UK the hype is non exsistent where i live,no TV spots yet,no trailer shown at any movie ive been to and the cinema is covered in huge posters and double size wall banners of POTC2 as well as larger than life size charatcer posters on the wall adjacent to the entrance, not one SR poster

I would put it at a medium hype for general movie goer... but I'd put it at infinity max super duper hype for the average Superman fan :D

SR will definitely be big. The marketing right now is insane. Every time I turn on the tv it's this or that about Superman Returns. All of the teenagers watching the MTV movie awards got a treat and watched a part of the plane sequence. Hell, the cast of SR presented the very first award. The toys and advertisements are everywhere. Best Buy has Superman stuff displayed prominently. Myspace even had a beautiful looking Superman login a few days ago. Now the positive reviews are pouring in. People want to and will see this movie. It's just that they're not going to voice this to everyone at all times. The awareness is out there.

You know what got me mad, Best Buy has all these great deals on Superman dvd's from all the different incarnations, and I already own them.

But the question is...do people care when they see these ads? You, as well as many others are confusing advertisment with hype. Poseidon was advertised quite a bit and box office numbers show, there wasn't much hype for it.

Infact the hype around the first POTC was ZERO.
Even this board was full of doubters last week. But reviews afrer reviews the hype is rising.

You're talking about this message board. One, very limited, very biased demographic. Its like going to the Republican convention and saying "Do you think George Bush is doing a good job?" Of course they will say overwhelmingly yes...but does it mean the rest of America agrees?

Sadly I went to a sneak preview today and the theater was not even filled, i would say maybe 2/3. But that could be due to the fact that it was fathers day and one pass was good for two people.

Personally, I think this movie is going to rock. Seriously, it sounds like it has all the elements and stuff. There is kick butt action and a great story full of drama, romance and all the else.

How it plays for the future is anyone's guess, but I think this story is going to be a winner for the first movie.

Again...quality is not necessarily a reflection of hype. Many great movies bomb.

Right now, this movie just doesn't seem to have much hype among the GENERAL POPULACE.

That could change upon release...however, right now it just isn't generating a water cooler type quality based on ads.

Publicity and marketing in Australia is pretty big. 3 weeks out and I've seen regular TV spots in prime time (and I watch VERY little TV).

But more noticable is the cross marketing with retailers. When I went grocery shopping this week I saw SR across Coke, cereal, Magazines - it was everywhere in the supermarket. I'm confident it'll do well.

By contrast X3 had almost no publicity - and the Australian box office reflected that.

Yeah, but the quality is going to influence the hype. This is touted as the big summer big blockbuster and if it gets rave reviews than it will help...it won't hurt. Look at what good reviews did for movies with virtually no quality and just pure hype ****cough****brokeback****cough.

Quality and hype are like that that analogy in Malcolm X. People will drink what other folks tell them to drink...whether it has blue ink in it or not.

I'm not talking about SR specifically...I'm just saying that the movie is getting off to the right foot. Regardless of these latest spoilers...I'm still really excited about the movie:) Just a little sort of dejected :(

I've seen the promo machine in full swing. Wal-Mart, Toys 'r' Us, and my local grocery store all have been swarmed with SR material. The film itself will be a pretty tough sell for some people, as they are probably more into a Pirates sequel. However, with the consistency of the reviews, Jerry Bruckheimer had better hope people like his movie, or it won't be able to heartily plug the gap SR is going to make in it's opening week, I think. As for the overall hype level, everyone I talk to about it at work thinks the preview is tight. Keep in mind I work at a gym, so finding another fellow comic geek is like searching for a needle in a stack of needles. These people are average joes like none other you'll find.

I'm sorry but all I've been seeing is stuff for Superman. I have yet to see squat from anything else. With the exception of the Superbowl trailer and the MTV clip I havent seen anything from POTC2. Theaters had neither Superman or POTC2 stuff up. But from a standpoint of TV and just general media saturation.... Superman Returns is all over the place.

I see some hype but not a lot. I don't hear people talking about it, which worries me. Could it be even though there isn't a lot of talk, a lot of people still plan on seeing it and this will be the biggest movie of the year? Who knows. The most hyped about movies so far this year to me have been The Da Vinci Code and X-Men 3. The most hyped about movie doesn't come out until next year and of course that's Spider-Man 3. Spider-Man seems to get a lot of hype.

maybe they'll flood your area with SR stuff after the WC?

Possibly but airing some spots during the matches (Especially the England games) would have seemed smart, also i'm surprised the cinema isn;t carrying a poster yet
