How Do You Feel The Bible Should Be Taken?

Celldog seems to believe that I have insulted him and Christians with my believe that the Bible is allegorical.

I believe that some of its verses have a straightfoward meaning however I believe the majority of its teachings are given in parables, analogies, similitudes, etc.

So Christian believers of the Hype, have I insulted you with this belief?

Raybia
I mainly read revalations

The bible is to be interpreted how the reader wants

Shouldn't the bible be interpreted in the way that G-d intended it to be? (Assuming you are a Christian who believes it was sent by G-d or that he Inspired those who did write it).

The right way seems to be more important than my way.

A very dangerous thing indeed. And what's the point if you can use it for whatever you want?

The Bible is like any other book. People interpret Catcher in the Rye in different ways. Granted, there is no religion based on Catcher on the Rye (that I know of) but you can't blame the Bible or the religion for the perverted actions of someone twisting and interpreting words of scripture to commit their evil acts. Just like its stupid to blame Counter Strike and Quentin Tarantino movies for a kid shooting up a school.

some things are easier to interpret from the bible than others. It's not too hard, using the text, to use it to cause acts of violence etc.

That's the thing though, no one can say or knows what the right way is.

But again, it's the same as the violent video games and movies caused the kid to shoot up the school argument. There are twisted people out there that will find any way to justify their actions or the actions of others.

Just like we shouldn't demonize all atheists because Hitler used evolutionary thought process to carry out The Holocaust.

(No offense, just a little jab at those who demonize all religious people based on solely the fundementalists).

You're evil that is all.

Ungodly! DORKSIDED!!!

Satanist! In all seriousnous, I only used your name since it was mentioned, just like raybia. Though I must say, I disagree withy our first post. THere are many allegories and whatnot in The Bible. Christ himself often spoke in parables.

But following a book that tells you that homosexuals are 'evil' etc, and people who defy the christian god are ok to kill, yeah, I think they are just getting things out of the text that aren't there....

I agree with that.

I guess if you are a believer in G-d and the bible, the way you live and the success you experience in life would be an indication whether you are correctly understanding and applying its teachings.

I hope you're not talking about MY first post, 'cause that'd be insane, as in my first post I said "It's very clear when Jesus is speaking in parables because he goes into story-telling mode like when you're telling a joke or something, "There was once a man who...", "There were two brothers, the one was blablabla, the other was blablabla.", etc.

Well did someone hack into your account?
Can you explain what was going through your head when you said it?
'Cause it sounds to me like you were insulting me for my beliefs.

Well, what I meant was, you were not right. There are many allegories in The Bible. Jsut as OverMyHead was wrong. Christ did use allegories and parables, he wasn't always speaking in alliteration. I'm sorry if I came off as harsh (though I get a harsh vibe from a lot of your posts as well).

Basically, I misunderstood you. I may have skipped over that part. But I doubt Jesus was speaking literally when tells us to kill homosexuals. I think that's something manput it in there. I think some of man's personal prejudices and beliefs are in The Bible, which accounts for many of the contradictiosn.

Whatever it is, I'm sorry.

Then you can't read. You are the one who is not right.
I clearly said that it's clear when Jesus is using parables, and that there is a ton of symbolism in the Bible. A T.O.N.

What I was saying was that there is no vague line between when a passage is intended as an historical account, and when it's allegory/symbolism/parable.

Daniel interpreted the dream about the statue with clay+iron feet.
It SYMBOLIZED empires.

But when the Bible says "Thou Shalt Not Steal.", that is clearly not allegorical. It's a very straightforward command.

Only a completely ignorant person would say that Jesus didn't speak in Parables.
HE'S FAMOUS for it!

I don't hate homosexuals, and I haven't killed Wilhelm or you yet so there you go. I guess I'm a bad Christian or I just like following the Ten Commandments or something. Crazy.:ninja:

Well, at least we've reached an understanding.

I'l come out and say I have a slight prejudice against atheists and the really skeptical agnostics, simply because the one atheist I'm in regular contest is the most arrogant and narrow minded person I know. Not to mention that there are some atheists here who are extremely critical of anyone who remotely challenges the concept of secular evolution, so I have developed a bit of a prejudice, and it does cause me to be a bit close minded when reading arguments by the oppposing side. I shouldn't base my opinion on them off a fe wpeople, and I do understand that, and I'm trying to be a bit more open-minded.

Jesus said the true path is very narrow and only few can take it.
He warned that many would come to him on the judgement saying that they did everything in his name and were Christians, but that he would say "Depart from me. I never knew you." which would shock the Hell out of them, 'cause they honestly thought they were "Christians" the whole time.

With a term as vague as "Born Again", it's sad that most Christians don't give it much thought, since Jesus said you "MUST" be Born Again, or you will not be saved.

There's a reason he characterized it as "taking up your cross" and "DYING to your old self".....because to really be a Born Again Christian, who is filled with the Holy Spirit and therefore saved.....there has to be a radical change in your entire life, according to Jesus anyway.

Nowhere in the Bible does Jesus teach, "Yeah dudez...just, you know, try yer best, and, you know...be decent to one another. Nobody's perfect, so, you know, We're cool."

He knew that rich man was too materialistic and so told him to sell EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS POSSESSIONS, become a homeless guy and follow him.

I highly, highly, highly doubt any of the "Christians" on these boards would give away their XBoxs, iPODs, computers, etc.
Pretty much, if you're a real Christian, and you're physically able, you're a missionary, 'cause God commanded his followers to take the Good News to the whole Earth.

That's why, in an ironic way, I have more respect for psycho Islamic suicide bombers and people like Pat Robertson.
'Cause if the Bible is true, if JESUS's words are true, then this a Life and Death battle for people souls, and you should be obssessed with it, as the focus for your life.

God has no room for casual Christianity. He actually said he'd rather have you be a wicked heathen than a lukewarm Christian.

That's why I couldn't be a Christian even if it was true.

SO what you're saying is, I should totally kill you then.
