How do you feel about the family friendly-ness of the Hype?

The name alone, like I said before, basically makes it appear to be a no more than PG-13 level forum.

Use Firefox with Adblock Plus. I don't know how I ever lived without it.

Anyway, some people's avatars have pushed things a little, but in all fairness SHH has been cleaning up. We've got much more chaste guidelines on "hotties threads" than we used to (obviously they're still not "family friendly" but it's an improvement), and there are stricter standards on the funny pics thread now too. The Community Forum is still not very family friendly in comparison to other forums here, but like I said, it's at least getting better and not worse.

How do you figure? Community has been tamed down so much that it's barely recognizable anymore.

I get infractions almost weekly. Mostly for snide comments. :(

This is the biggest forum i've ever been too...which is why I kinda like it. Plus, 80% of the mods hate me. :o

I like to argue. Sue me. :D

Agreed. After my hiatus, coming back here was like... waking up the morning after a wild party........ only to find that the entire place had been completely cleaned and the party people missing..... and then you try to remember the fun you had before....... and then you start to feel like you're in the wrong place. :(

It's not the same as it ever was, not the same as it ever was, not the same as it ever was, not the same as it ever was....

I find the whole idea of the words "family" and "friendly" in the same sentence quite ridiculous to be honest.

Exactly... for example, Knaves and I are family. I tell him to "Go **@#@@#***@##*** off and suck ********^**%**$*****$*$*** and eat a bowl of *****#*#***$**#**%*%*** you piece of *****^**%*****&**%*%*$**$****... " all the time... but we're still family.

All I've ever heard is that the ownership wants it to be a PG-13 environment.
PG-13 does not equal "family friendly".
G-Rated = "family friendly"

I have never seen anyone in a position of authority here admonish someone for breaking out of the boundaries of a "G Rating".

None of the avatars I've seen are crossing any sort of line. There is nothing wrong with the human body. If your niece is close enough to even see what the avatars are, and deranged enough to be adversely influenced by seeing a full-figured woman WALKING, or DANCING, you have WAY bigger problems than the family-friendliness of the Hype.

As for the ads, that's your fault. I see no ads.

I have pop ups blocked so I don't see most of the ads either. However, I do agree, there is nothing wrong with seeing a naked human body UNLESS said body is in the process of being dismembered.

That said, 13 and up the Hype is fine, under 13 and there's really nothing here to entertain the little ones.

haha, Pg-13. You redmarvel, drop sexual innuendos tons of times, and I mean really sexual. but eh, were all teenagers/adults. so who cares.

:fhm:

i just noticed this. i think it's the first time i've ever been sigged :woot:

Not all of us hate you. In fact, I just fired my last padawan. Do you want the job?

In answer to the thread's question: I don't necessarily want a "family friendly" Hype. I mean, hell...this is not Disney World. Well, let me qualify that statement: at least, not a family friendly Community. The Hero Boards I believe need to be more kid-oriented because superheroes appeal to children. But I've always looked at Community as basically the Hype's locker room...or lounge for the grown-ups. I mean, so many of us have grown up as adults here...and our subject matter and the things that are important to us now are not the same as they were perhaps when we joined Spider-Man Hype! several years ago. Most of us have real life going on. I'm not saying I want to see Porn and goatse s***---that's just foul. But I wouldn't mind a Hype with some...edge to it.

Obviously I moderate what is innappropriate because I am part of a staff and I have a job to do...and rules to enforce. But I miss the old days when we had copious amounts of ridiculousness sogging this place up. I miss a lot of the people who jumped ship to the other site a couple of years ago. I miss....well, everything.

Yeah but the issue has always been subjectiveness. An offensive joke may not be offensive to you LS, but a more, I guess, "prudish" mod may delete it. And a more "power go to the head" mod, might infract said person for making an offensive joke.

I remember, posting a non sanctioned link or something. I was warned in the thread by a mod. I didn't change it right away and another mod came in and infracted me.

It's inconsistency.

But honestly, SHH is more family friendly than locker room. And it's that environment that did force a lot of members out. And maybe that's the way a lot of people like. You have less controversial posters, there will be less people causing trouble.

I guess.

Like I said...I don't have a problem with a more streamlined "kiddie" environment on the Hero Boards. It's interesting: when I go into to manage those areas of the site my entire mindset changes--I'm focusing on forum subjects at hand which leaves little room for "controversial" behavior. But here? I expect users to be themselves, loosen up and have some fun.

And I honestly believe that the majority of moderators here are cut from that same slack. But there are *some* that are more...how can I put it...pure. I'm just too liberal/deviant I guess. LOL

The Hype! should not be "family friendly" as it is, first and foremost, a forum revolving around Superheros. Superhero-related content is rarely devoid of violence, sexuality and graphic imagery. So, why should a Superhero message board be? Now, this is all based on logic. I guess the first sentence should be, "logically the Hype! should not be 'family friendly'..."

But, I understand that there are reasons not pertaining to said logic as to why there's been so much bubble-wrapping lately. I guess the less-adult the content, the more potential users? And the more potential users, the more potential earnings from the ads? I don't know, but, that doesn't seem like a valid reason to child-proof a forum which has a target demographic of teenagers and young adults. Is it worth it to terminate topics of conversation just so Mirko can make an extra buck? Maybe not, but, what it comes down to is that the place is Mirko's. And if that's really what he wants, that's what he'll get.

Disney should just buy this site out and get it over and done with.

Hmmm, I'm not sure I would agree with that. Mirko is not a prude. I think he tries to show deference to those of us who are more conservative, while also still honoring the thinking of those of us who aren't. Think about it: When Dew was running this spot things were a lot more liberal and enjoyable. Why? Because Dew knew how to let the boys live and let live--while still moderating obvious issues. She had balance and that's something that has been hard for some other mods to strike.

Dear Hype Gods...

Please do not make CelticPredator a moderator.

That's true. This also makes me think that a lot of the reason there are so many inconsistencies is due to globals acting frequently in areas unassigned to them. Globals can obviously be very helpful, too, as one moderator can not watch over a section, let alone several, all day long. But I think if the designated moderator could handle most situations, especially petty flaming and trolling, maybe the Hype! would be far better off. Afterall, there's a reason certain people are given certain forums to take care of.

I will make you a cake? Hows that? And I will give all the children LASER EYES...and legs made out of....er GOLD!

The Hype is awesome. Much better than that other site. If the Hype as it is now is "family friendly" then that's ok with me.
