Hopefully it will be that the Mother is about to have another baby. Or maybe Lyndsay Fonseca wants to rush into a relationship and get married, so Ted needs to sit down and have the talk with her and tell her that she shouldn't just settle for anyone. If he had done so, he would've missed marrying their mother.

I don't think they would do the "Mother is dead" route because the kids seem almost too happy, or at least in good spirits to have that be the case. If she were dead, I doubt the kids would get mad at him or tell him to finish telling the story already.
