How I Met Your Mother - Part 3

Ted definitely was settling with those women. Whether he would be really happy was another matter. It would be more out of not wanting to be lonely than actually meeting someone who was right and deciding to build a life together from a position of wholeness than a position of incompleteness. Even Stella was settling I think.

I can totally relate to Ted losing hope though and then just trying to have a good time rather than evaluating if someone is actually suitable to be not only one's wife but the mother of one's kids. I think you can kind of tell with different women you meet if you could really see yourself settling down with them and whether she would be someone you see having your children.

On reflection I don't think that there have been too many women Ted has dated that could realistically seem like they could be the mother of his kids. Victoria didn't. She didn't really have that vibe about her. Robin didn't either, as she never wanted kids in the first place. And Zoey definitely didn't. She seemed too much about fighting for eco rights and wanting someone to join her in her cause than wanting a family life. And then crazy Jeanette - she definitely wasn't mother material. She shouldn't even be allowed near kids. Heck, she wasn't even wife material.

As for Stella, well there was a sense that she'd already been there and done that, and so Ted might be shortchanging himself because maybe she wanted a father figure in her child's life rather than wanting to start a new life together with Ted.

And many of the other women always had something about them too that made them seem not right. They might've been hot, but didn't seem to have that maternal caring quality. So just getting a supermodel for the part could've been no different to anyone who had gone before. She could've potentially filled the loneliness Ted felt in giving him someone, but might not really have been a soul mate and definitely might not have fulfilled the mother part.

With Cristin Milioti, I do get more of a motherly vibe, and not just because we're told she is the mother. It's not actually from the end of HIMYM itself but from watching her other videos. I think it's her cuteness, down-to-earthness and accessibility, plus the fact that she does seem very similar to Alyson Hannigan who already gives off a motherly vibe herself in the show.
Ted was totally settling with Stella, and he was rushing into that entire situation with her. Robin hit the nail on the head when she told him not to marry her because Ted was doing things he hated, like moving to NJ, simply because Stella already had a house and a child. She basically told Ted that he was trying to jump into a life that wasn't his. That was the life he always wanted, but it wasn't there because he helped build it. Not to mention, it was clear from the start that Stella still had feelings for her ex, and that was the biggest hurdle that kept her away from Ted at the start.

As for Ted going out to have fun, I get why he did it, but I feel like the writing of all of that hurt what most of us loved about him, which was how far he was willing to go for love. Just in season 1, he did so many crazy things, like steal the Blue French Horn, arrange three parties in row just for a girl, hire a blue-instrument orchestra, do a rain dance, try out long distance, and try out online dating. Sure, most of those things were for Robin, but after their breakup in season 2, they never really showed that side of Ted, other than the 2 minute date with Stella, and the Christmas decorations he did for Robin after she found out she couldn't have babies.

For me, that is what made Ted such a lovable character and someone you could root for, and I really hope the mother brings that side of him back again because he has seemed very lost in recent seasons.

The show has never been expertly written, but it is fun. By the end of this thing we will all have different opinions on which girlfriend should have been the mother.

Though it seems to me that by this point in the series Ted has become somewhat of a frazzled psychotic.

Never? You must have missed the first 3 seasons. :o

That's why I don't want the entire 9th season set over just those 56 hours at the end of which Ted would decide that Cristin is the girl for him. He's just met her! Some people might approve, but I don't think everyone could, because they'd know that he simply hasn't taken the time to really know her and see if there's anything that would be a cause for concern. I don't care how special and compatible she appears to be. Deciding you want to marry someone after just a weekend is really rushing things and he could regret it if she didn't turn out to be the right person.

If that had been Jeanette instead of Milioti that Ted met at this wedding, then just imagine if she seemed to be normal on the surface after only a few hours or a couple of days together. Ted wouldn't know that she is actually a crazy psychopath who could easily hide her true nature at the start.

I want to see Ted even have fights with Cristin and then make up and work things out. I want them to decide that they are better together as a couple than apart, based not just on infatuation but careful thinking and other factors taken into consideration. I just don't think they can have grown enough as individuals and as a couple within such a short space of time. That's why I feel that it would be cheating Ted out of what should be the most significant relationship of his life by squeezing it all into a couple of days.

I hope Cristin does become part of the regular cast (even maybe billed in the credits) and not just a guest part. She needs to be the sixth member of the cast and to have storylines with each member, even sometimes separately from Ted. I want to see her become a best friend to Lily. I want to see her how she interacts with (and maybe babysits) Marvin. I want her to be able to offer advice to Lily and Marshall on their dilemma, and to befriend Robin and Barney. I also want to see how she interacts with Ted's parents and how he does with hers.

Time is the key, which cannot happen in 56 hours.

I'm not really onboard with stretching the wedding weekend out for the entire season, and I hope that's not the extent of what they're planning. I'm sure they could get a string of episodes out of the event, but a whole season? Don't press your luck...

I guess I'm the only one who thinks a whole season at the wedding could work. If they did it 24 style where minute by minute details were plotted then no I don't think it could work. I think they'll have plenty of flashback and flashforwards that should keep things fresh. This is a huge weekend in the lives of all the main characters involved BARNEY is getting married to Robin, Marshall and Lily have to deal with whose dream they should follow, and most importantly. Teddy Westside is not only gonna meet his future wife that weekend but knowing Ted he's gonna fall madly in love with her and I think unlike Robin who flipped out when Ted mosbied her she's gonna say it back. It gonna be one magical weekend for everyone involved.

That's whats keeping me from disliking the idea completely.

The main thing we need from the final season. Is another Robin Sparkles video

I'd imagine they'll have to keep jumping around in time for the next season to work. I mean, they'll have to resolve the Marshall and Lily being apart for a year, and I do think it would be odd if they didn't give us some glimpse into how Ted and the Mother interact with one another.

I honestly don't think the entire season will revolve around the wedding, with the whole thing told in real time ala 24.

However, I do think we'll see that last 56 hours played out throughout almost the entire first half of the season.

There are alot of questions to be answered during that last 56 hours leading up to it as well as the complicated events of the wedding itself and the reception.

I do think the first 12 episodes will revolve around the wedding. However any more than that is overkill. We should see the romance between Ted and the mother blossom. I think as an audience we deserve to see that.

Before season 8 started, I think we all assumed it would be a longer wait for Barney to propose than just half a season, so hopefully they'll surprise us the same way with season 9.

Despite the fact we all hope they continue the show beyond the meeting between Ted and The Mother; and despite the fact they likely will (even if for a short time), these final moments leading to the titular meeting need to be treated with care and alloted enough time to be told the best that they can so that when the moment comes, it will have been worth the 8 years spent building to it.

This. first 12 episodes (give or takes) spent on the wedding. The last 12 (give or take) leading to Ted's proposal and/or The Mother's pregnancy.

Is there a list of all the names of girls featured in the show before (either girls Ted has dated or Barney has slept with)? Assuming they don't want to call the mother by the same name as any of them because of the association, we could probably eliminate what her first name isn't going to be.

Obviously not Robin, Lily, Stella, Cindy, Jeanette, Zoey, Naomi or Victoria. And not Patrice, Nora or Quinn. Who else were there?

My friends and I were trying to remember what has been revealed about the mother already (with a bit of a help from Netflix):

-was Cindy's (Rachel Bilson) roommate

-plays the bass

-has similar musical/book interests to Ted

-paints robots playing sports

-makes breakfast foods sing showtunes: "memories performed by English muffins" (I can really see her doing this well)

-was in Ted's Economics Class accident & was in the same club as him and Barney on St. Patrick's Day

-gave Ted her number, Ted called it immediately

I think there might be sites on google that list everything we know so far about the mother. Haven't checked them though.

And btw i want to see her actually doing some of these things like painting robots or making breakfast foods sing - things which Ted would find adorable. She can't do some of these things if they only interact over the 56 hours.

I believe there was also a corny shell fish joke Ted always told, and the mother found it hilarious.

I was literally just reading this page.

I don't own the DVDs, but I thought this was interesting.

  • On the Season Six DVD set, there is a special feature called "What we know about your mother". In it, Future Ted lists that:

  1. She's not Robin.
  2. She's not Victoria.
  3. She was almost Stella.
  4. She was Cindy's roommate.
  5. She has a yellow umbrella...that I stole.
  6. She was in what I thought was my architecture class.
  7. She thought I was a complete idiot.
  8. She's considered weird by some.
  9. She was never going to be Zoey. That was just doomed.
  10. I met her on the day of a wedding.
  11. And here's something I haven't told you before:
    1. "...She never would've left that much of her sandwich uneaten. No joke, I've seen that woman get a half a pad of butter wrapped up to go...
    2. ...Oh, and your mother would've definitely would've befriended the waitress, which inevitably would have lead to a free desert...Mom's ability to get free pie; supernatural...
    3. ...Oh, and I wouldn't have had much luck with an orchid. I'd have given her lilacs; her favorite...which just just happened to be the first flower I ever gave her...the very moment we met..."

All of the facts about the mother mentioned:

While not much is known about the mother, the following has been revealed throughout the series.

  • At the end of Lucky Penny, Future Ted says:
“Kids, funny thing about destiny. I thought I was destined to get that job, but I was wrong. My destiny was to stay in New York. Because if I hadn’t, I never would’ve met your mother."
This strongly suggests that Ted meets the mother in New York.
  • At the end of Something Blue, Future Ted closes the episode talking about his and Robin’s futures:
“And as hard as it was at the time, in the end we both got what we wanted. She did eventually go on to live in Argentina, and Morocco, Greece, Russia, even Japan for a little while. And I? Well, I met your mom.”
  • At the end of How I Met Everyone Else, Ted asks Marshall and Lily where his wife is, at his college reunion. As the reunion was held in 2020, it is revealed that, by 2020, Ted would have already gotten married.
  • In Wait For It, it's revealed by Future Ted that the mother's yellow umbrella factors into the story of how she and Ted met.
  • In No Tomorrow, Future Ted states that his future wife was at the same St. Patrick's Day party he went to, but that they didn't meet each other. When going back to the party to find his phone, he picked up the yellow umbrella that belonged to her. However, Ted does bump into some seemingly arbitrary woman whom he seems to notice and who seems to notice him, now proven to be a red herring.
  • In The Three Days Rule, Future Ted tells his children that when he got their mother's phone number, he called her right away.
  • In The Leap, Ted is shown teaching his first class at Columbia University. Future Ted narrates how this was the best job he's ever had, and that if it weren't for that job, he never would have met their mother. However, in Definitions, it's revealed that Ted was in the wrong room for his first class, and all the students there were Economics students, and that the mother was one of them.
  • In Double Date, Future Ted tells his kids that when he first told their mother his "shellfish-selfish" joke, she laughed.
  • In Last Cigarette Ever, Future Ted reveals that he eventually quit smoking two weeks into dating the mother.

  • In Girls Versus Suits, Ted dates a girl named Cindy. Cindy's roommate is the mother, as revealed by Future Ted. Although they never meet, while in Cindy's apartment Ted looks around and discovers things about the roommate/mother that shows they have very similar likes and hobbies, such as making breakfast foods sing show tunes, painting pictures of robots playing sports, and playing bass guitar. Ted also sees what Future Ted states was probably the mother's feet, as she leaves the bathroom to go into her room. [1]
  • In Big Days, Future Ted reveals that Ted will meet the mother on the day of a wedding and that "a little ways down the road" he will be the best man at a wedding, later revealed in Challenge Accepted and The Magician's Code - Part Two to be Barney and Robin's wedding.
  • In Garbage Island, in a scene that flashes forward to 2021, Ted meets Wendy the Waitress at an airport and tells her that he is now married to "a wonderful woman" and has two kids, revealing that he will have met and married the mother by this time. This fits into the continuity of the series, given that Ted's kids are in their late teens by 2030.

  • Later in The Exploding Meatball Sub, a scene set in April 2021 (ten years into the future) shows Ted wearing a wedding ring, further implying he will have met and married the mother by this time.
  • In No Pressure, it is stated that the last person he said 'I love you' to before the mother was Robin.

  • In Trilogy Time, it is shown that by 2015, Ted is watching the Star Wars trilogy with Barney, Marshall, and his baby daughter - implying Ted has met the mother and has had a child by that time. Ted is also seen to be wearing a wedding ring in the scene as well which means he has already married the mother by 2015.

  • In Farhampton, it is shown that while Ted is waiting for the train back to the city at the Farhampton train station, after Barney and Robin's wedding, the mother also comes there, holding up her yellow umbrella in the rain. Craig Thomas confirmed in an interview that this is the place where Ted and the mother finally meet. [2]
  • In Band or DJ?, it is revealed that the mother is the bass guitar player in the band playing at Barney and Robin's wedding
  • In Bad Crazy, Future Ted reveals that the last girl he dated before meeting the mother was Jeanette.
  • In The Time Travelers, it is revealed that in April of 2013, 45 days before she met Ted, The Mother was dating a Finance guy named Louis, living in West 115th street in apartment 7A and still getting her Economics degree.
  • [BLACKOUT]In Something New The Mother's appearance is finally revealed, she's short, has mid length brown hair, large brown eyes and a wide smile. In this episode she is buying her ticket for Farhampton where eventually she'll meet Ted.[/BLACKOUT]

Hmmm......Ted gives her lilacs when he meets her and all the stuff on the Season 6 DVD were stuff I never knew.

So he sees her at the wedding and thinks "whoa, she fine", then goes to the train station depressed cause Robin married Barney but she pops out of a taxi (why do I feel like they're going to swerve us and have Robin pop out of the taxi only for the mother to be there at the station already).
