I actually kinda like the idea of seeing the rest of the gang interact with the mother, depending on how they play it.

The idea is fine...but idk about that being spread over a whole season. A wrapup hour long episode or even a wrap up tv movie I think that idea sounds great. But doing it for a whole season, especially if its 24 episodes, seems like too much.

However, I am kinda happy that they are having the show end (I assume) with Ted meeting the mother rather than Ted meets the mother and then we keep telling the story. Except that we're also going to get to know the mother

I still want a wrapup movie (whether on TV or in theatres) just like Sex and the City had where we get to see Ted and the mother's wedding. It seems that there's been more focus on Robin and Barney's wedding when they're supposed to be secondary characters. At least we should see the main character's wedding.

And I hope Cristin Milioti's pic is in the title sequence next season and her name comes up at the start with the rest of the cast credits, and she's not just relegated to the end credits, otherwise it still makes her like a guest star.

I also hope she shows up on Letterman or one of these talk shows in the near future before the start of the next season. I just want to hear her thoughts on being cast for this role and what she thinks of it all.

I'd be worried, but the Bays and Thomas have agreed to another season because they seem to be rejuvenated creatively. It seems like they lobbied for it. Good or bad, it'll be interesting what they come up with.

My initial reaction to that article was negative, I really disagree with having the last season set over 56 hours.

But......I think one of the things I love about the show so much is their storytelling devices. The show is about Ted telling his kids this story, but every episode is made up of the group sitting around in the bar telling each other stories (which reminds me of my group of friends, I always thought a lot of people who like the show liked it on some level because of that).

And sure, the major plotline across the season could be Ted debating whether or not he wants to tell Robin he loves her (cue my gagging), but if she's meeting the group then it'll open up to little stories about her, at least we'll get to know her that way.

The more I hear about next season the less I like, but I'm trusting the creators, seasons 1-4 are some of my favorite television ever.

Well as i said before, maybe the season taking place over 56 hours is just the framing device like the entire show is really only taking place one or two evenings where Ted is recounting everything. Maybe in flashbacks and flash forwards it will venture beyond that weekend and that location.

But the mother having all these interactions with the cast begs the question where is Ted all this time. How many narrow misses can there be where they don't meet all this time without it becoming contrived?

Alyson and Cobie better not get pregnant during the final season or how will they ever explain that or their fluctuating weight? Everyone in fact really needs to look exactly the same throughout those 24 episodes. No longer hair, no bruises or injuries, no weight loss or gain. The writers seem to have put everyone potentially under a lot of pressure.

I just finished watching Slap Bet, and I realized that not only was it a great episode (possibly the best of the series), but also after consulting the wiki page, Marshall still has two more slaps left. I really hope we get to see the return of the slap next season.

After the wedding, when Robin and Barney are dancing, Marshall will ask to cut in. Barney will step aside, thinking he wants to dance with Robin. But he's really just there for his slap.

Also, this video is worth watching to see how Cristin Milioti jokes around, interacts with another person etc. It's a Q&A session with her co-star, Steve Kazee from Once where they're asking each other questions sent in to them by members of the public. She also makes fun of Dina Lohan in there.

You can also learn a bit more about the actress and get a feel for her personality and sense of humour. I will say that she looks very promising.

So apparently, although the final season takes place over just the wedding weekend, there will be even more non-linear storytelling so that it won't just be stuck on those 56 hours.

For as much experimentation as we know ‘How I Met Your Mother’ producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas take with the flow of time in the long-running CBS comedy’s narrative, even we raised an eyebrow over the news that ‘HIMYM’s final season would take place over 56 hours leading up to the big wedding. Entertainment Weekly had a chance to catch up with executive producer Carter Bays, who previewed that the final season format might not be as confined as viewers have surmised. Says Bays:

There’s a time jump of some sort in every episode of this show, so you can rest assured the premiere will be no different. That being said, this next season in particular will feature some of the most non-linear episodes we’ve ever done.

EW noted that some exceptions to the rule would occur, potentially in flashback episodes that feature more familiar adventures for Ted, Robin, Barney, Marshall and Lily. Also worth noting is the expected upgrade of Cristina Milioti’s as yet unnamed mother to series regular, as noted by the New York Post.

I don't know if that article interpreted it in that way though. The actual NY Post article says:

It doesn't specifically say she'll be added to the show's credits as a regular. Lots of guest stars appear regularly. So we'll have to wait and see, but I do hope she is indeed billed as one of the main stars and 6th member of the cast.

And considering that the only regulars are the main cast, that's a very good thing.

But unless they have flash forwards then we'll never see them sharing a scene together until the final episode, unless they don't meet in the very last episode but show them interacting and doing stuff together later that night and that still counts as part of the wedding weekend.

The only new series regular this show has ever added. It's fitting.

Yay! So glad for her. Also, I hope they update the title pictures now to include her. Of course, it can't be the same style with the group of friends all sitting together. It will have to be something different like a montage of the wedding or something.

And if you've watched her in any of these videos, she can more than hold her own against the others. She's got a great personality.

I hope they might have another musical episode like they did with Guys vs Suits. Maybe it could be a surreal sequence with the other members of the cast saying something to Ted. And with Cristin Milioti and Neil Patrick Harris both accomplished singers, they could headline the number.

I've been rewatching the series on Netflix, and I never really thought about this too much, but when Ted first mentions the Yellow Umbrella, its blowing away in the wind. I wonder if Ted meets her because he's helping her get back her umbrella after it flies out of her hands. The only problem is that its shown flying away on a NYC street, but I guess that's because they didn't know the exact when/where of their meeting.

And its also great to hear the mother will be a big part of the final season, and not just an every now and then appearance.

I think early on, they did set up the umbrella to be a part of why or how they meet. It seems like their plans for the umbrellas changed, and now it's just a visual cue to tell us that this is the mother.

And the only reason I bring it up is because the Yellow Umbrella has always been the symbol of the mother, but I feel like when it was first introduced, it was being set up to have a bigger impact other than simply being the object that indicates to us who the mother is. It almost sounded like the umbrella was the biggest key to him meeting her.

Oh, I'm not disputing that. But what I'm saying is that they could potentially meet at the train station but not in the very final episode but maybe the penultimate one. Then they could travel back to NYC from there and chat on the train and maybe when they're about to go their separate ways, he asks for her number and it's in a New York street where her umbrella blows away. It would still technically be the wedding weekend.

But that's all dependent on whether they want them to meet in the very final episode.

That yellow umbrella scene from before might even be a different scene altogether where the mother was carrying it with her on the way to the St Patricks' Day party (I don't remember if it was raining, but she did have her umbrella with her) and not necessarily the meeting itself. Like I said, it might've just been symbolic of the fact that a yellow umbrella was involved, and not representative of the actual scene.

And if all else fails, there's always the deus ex machina they've used before that Ted's memory isn't always accurate and he might misremember certain details.
