The Dark Knight Rises How Important is physical portrayals in this movie?

With certain characters, I feel their physical appearance is extremely important. Spiderman, Superman, Thor, I think characters like that are way more attached to their appearance than Batman, especially if he's encased in some sort of armor in each film.

But believe me, if this were a more fantastical take, with a cloth or spandex costume, I'd be up in arms like some of you guys (though I will say Bale might have his weight fluctuate in this film like it did in BB. His face when Alfred is talking to him looks alot thinner than when he's dancing with Selina or in the prison)

I just don't feel with this particular interpretation that the appearance matters that much. And TBH, it hasn't been as drastic as it was in the previous series. Joker was still tall and lanky, Bane is still somewhat muscular, Crane was thin and creepy looking, Ras still had a weird goatee lol I mean, it's close enough.

In the Nolan franchise, I wouldnt care if Killer Croc was portrayed as a giant dude/pimp wearing a tailored 3-piece suit made of crocodile skin.

Well, I think originally Bane was supposed to be like 6'2'' or something, a very muscular guy but then over time he became freakishly huge!

I actually blame the Kelly Jones cover for this, people started to think that Bane is a monster, so they drew him like that!

At first I was totally against Bane being shorter than Batman.

But in the trailers two things make up for Bane's size:

1) Bane's swagger
2) Nolan's atmosphere

These really work to make Bane far more menacing than his size ever could.

I think a certain level is called for. For example, The Joker wouldn't seem like The Joker without a white face and green hair.

But I'm not obsessive about it. As long as the character bears at least a vague resemblance to their comic version, I can accept it. I don't have a problem with Batman's appearance. Crane is a skinny guy who wears a Scarecrow mask. Ra's Al Ghul had a goatee similar to the comics. The Joker had a white face, green hair, and a purple suit. Bane wears a mask. Catwoman wears a leather bodysuit and cat ears.

Some of it isn't my ideal (Scarecrow wearing a normal suit, The Joker's slashed smile and facepaint, Bane being smaller than I'd prefer, Catwoman not having a cowl), but I can deal with it.

To me, acting ability trumps physical resemblance. Michael Caine looks nothing like the comic Alfred, but I like his Alfred just the same, and I really don't care if he has a moustache, or if Harvey Dent had blond hair. And I would rather have Tom Hardy as Bane than a wrestler with no acting ability who was cast just because he's 7 feet tall.

and...

3) Bane actually looking and feeling bigger than Batman in the movie.

:D

Exactly. I hate Kelley Jones' style. Hate it.

That's a very valid point. Bane (and Batman too, half the time) is drawn so exaggeratedly huge and muscular in the comics that no real human on Earth could look like that.

Yeah, if you actually went through alot of comics, the perspective of different panels makes most characters look larger or smaller at any given time. For reference, Hulk is only supposed to be 7' in comics, but I've seen him drawn as tall as 10' depending on who he is standing over. But, of course when seen near a doorway he looks almost exactly 7' in most cases. I guess it's just the artist's interpretation at any given moment really

Its pretty important, but writing and acting are just as important. Piccolo and Bulma looked great in Dragonball: Evolution...that's it, really....

Indeed. When one literally compares comic books to something that resembles reality it's going to be hard, almost unachievable. This Bane is strong but agile as well. It's all about fitting the medium, like putting Elfman Batman music into Nolan Batman films. I like Elfman's score, but in all the edits I see it's out of place and doesn't feel right. Bane in the Arkhamverse is well beyond reality but I don't blink an eye when I deal with him in game, because it fits in to his surroundings.

Everyone is making the point about focusing more on the character and performance than stature and musculature, and that's 100% correct, but there's another point to be added as well:

Realism.

In the comics, Batman and other heroes like him are illustrated with the massive size and definition of body builders. In the real world, this would be inefficient for the type of work that Batman is doing. He needs to be powerful, to be sure, but he also needs to be quick and agile, even acrobatic. Seeing someone with a Mr. Olympia frame swinging and gliding above the streets of Gotham is would appear completely ludicrous in real life or on film, but it looks good in the comics.

Just keep that in mind. Batman needs to be strong, but he needs to be quick and agile. Bale was the perfect Batman size in The Dark Knight, if you ask me. Ripped as **** but not massive.

I don't think Bane's nipples are prominent enough. I always considered him a very nipply character, spiritually speaking.

....why you gotta go there, dude...? I'm still human, y'know?

See, he's protecting them. They're the real source of his power.

When "The Batman" cartoon show came out, I didnt mind that pre-transformation Bane looked like this:

The way he fought with Batman, I actually didn't mind if that was Bane's only form. Before the TDKR showed off Bane's new look, I always wished that they just portrayed Bane with a similar physique as Batman. I'll be satisfied if Bane just came off as somebody who can kick Batman's ass in a fight.

Batman also fights pre-transformation Bane in the first 30 seconds of the youtube video below http://youtu.be/ja2Yc7eZag4:

Also interesting is that he kind of adopted a trench-coat look when first appeared:

Looks like an amalgam of Hush and Blank Mask.

Look's like Pulp Fiction's Gimp.

Actually, I think this version has more 'gimp' in it...

...but I really like this version. Something more menacing and sadistic about it, aside from the sheer size. I also love how he doesn't really raise his voice in this version...makes him sound more menacingly intelligent and cold, instead of screaming/growling out in rage, etc.

I mean he doesn't look that bad. I'm sure they'll make him look bigger in the film itself.
