Like I said earlier, it's misleading as Hell to say, "Well at least Watchmen did more than ___________!" - in this case, Batman Begins, Superman Returns and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

All three of those films had 5-day opening weekends. Watchmen had a 3-day weekend.

True.

Don't forget, Titanic opened at $28.6 million. :cwink: :lmao:

Still ain't gonna change the fact that tracking had Watchmen opening $10-$15 million more, and they needed that money since it's highly expected to drop big next weekend.

I hope that it will make enough domestically for WB to greenlight an IMAX re-release of its DC edition in July.

And that's funny how?

Titanic's box office was pretty much due to amazing legs and word-of-mouth. And the fact that the entire January to April '98 slate of films were mostly God-awful - i.e. when studios dump their turds on the market.

I loved the article at CHUD that Devin posted. It explains it perfectly.

I mean using other movies' box office performance to say, "See, Watchmen could do the same thing too!"

Titanic was an absolute phenomenon. It won't ever happen again. But I decided to join the ridiculous argument anyway, considering someone brought up LOTR:ROTK, of all the movies to compare Watchmen to. :oldrazz:

Sigh, I do find random things funny, don't I?

You have these weird tendencies to throw in random smiley faces.

Pretty meager Monday numbers

$3,885,264

Monday numbers are usually a good indicator for the films legs (although 2nd weekend numbers are of course better).

Based on the 69% drop on Monday, I think we'll be very lucky to get over 130M

Still, with all the other revenue streams, this will still turn a tidy profit for WB.

For your information, Watchmen's revenue stream, generates near $90 million dollars worldwide so far and included Zack Snyder's charitable contributions to his community.

Sorry had to do it.

It failed to break $100 million worldwide on its opening weekend. Considering it was a "Day and Date" release (i.e. most countries got it on the same date), that's not a good sign.

The problem is that WB has to share a lot of revenue with other studios. Paramount is distributing it internationally, we all know why Fox is getting a piece, and Legendary gets however much WB gets. And WB had to foot the entire marketing bill.

How much did it gross?
I was gonna guess around 70 mill

I think with re-release (if what Snyder said came true), plus DVD and cable rights deal, Watchmen will be profitable in the end. And unlike SR, this doesn't need to have a sequel for a follow-up. However, Hollywood might perceive it as falling below expectation, which may dogged this movie later on if it is seen as a BO failure.

You guys rrealize that every movie is essentially a profit... is it a tentpole? That's the question... based on these returns... Watchmen is not a tentpole. Movies can do well in March. I see low budget comedies and even action films pull in 100 million all the time in the non-summer seasons... Watchmen was expected to do close to 200 million... Snyder did not deliver. Good day and good night...

really? I'm shocked. I guess lots of boyfriends and husbands had to do extra work that day
Nah, what's shocking about Titanic (and absolutely not repeatable) is how it took in between $20-$30 million every weekend for MONTHS ON END.

Judging from how much WB spent to market Watchmen, I think it could be considered a tentpole.

I do think legs are a good reflection of quality... sometimes the main reflection... I think that is what drives WOM... and the fact that this movie fell short on so many levels among so many people says all you need to know. Now who knows? Maybe it has a 30 million dollar weekend next week and I am eating crow. I just think it is highly unlikely at this point. I don't get the vibe from the general audience... hard to believe I'll be one of the people renting the film out and seeing it for the first time myself months from now... being the fanboy I am.

Why are you waiting for DVD?

i think the reason why the number is low is because, look at the unemployment numbers
people are losing jobs

Why are you waiting for DVD?

I just don't feel like seeing this in theatres... I have a a cheap movie ticket that I bought years ago and never used... so I may still go. More likely looking at DVD.
