It always seems odd to me that they continue to make these movies. I can't remember the last time I saw anyone get excited over the franchise. Then again, I'm basing this on my circle of friend. So, please, enlighten me about the success of the series. Thanks.

i don't know. as popular as the Mission Impossible movies. I liked part 3 due to JJ Abrams, but I'm shocked how they are gonna make a part 4. Is IM that popular, or is it just the namesake of the TV show. Is it because it's the closest thing that Cruise has to a tentpole franchise?

So with Resident Evil, I think it's more because of the brand (Ie the games). I mean, the movies make money but not to the point where it's gangbusters.

I was just checking the series' box office and none of the movies have grossed higher than $51 million. So, what about the DVD and Blu-Ray sales/rentals? There has to be a reason why the franchise isn't dead. Atleast Mission: Impossible had successful films.

A similiar style of appeal of the Fast and Furious movies i would say

Those movies actually grossed over $100 million and appealed to minorities. But with Resident Evil whose the fanbase? Video game nerds? I was under the impression that they hated the movies. Atleast that's what I recall when the first one was released.

wow.. 100m is really good for a video game movie...

Tomb Raider did better, though. It made 100 million domestic, which was not only good for a game movie but for a female-led action movie period.

The fact these movies increase overseas with each movie bodes well for Afterlife. Especially with the 3D element.

obviously people like these movies, cuz each time one comes out it makes more money than the last.

there are so many negative views on these movies it always surprises me to hear people speak positively of these movies.

When you have movies grossing a billion dollars worldwide I wouldn't call $147.7 million highly successful. It does okay, I guess, but its fanbase is very limited.

1, movies grossing billion+ are not that common and should by no means be a measuring stick to the average flick; 2, The RE movies usually have a budget of around 30-40 million, so those movies are making somewhere in the area of double or triple what they cost. That's what we call being pretty high up in the success department.

They are for R rated flicks with $40 million dollar budgets.

the budget for the first was 30mil....

for a horror movie thats amazing
its in the top 10 sci-fi horror flicks.. one of the few that are rated R too

When you factor in the marketing budget in addition to the percentage owed to exhibitors and anyone else getting a piece of the pie, the studio is barely breaking even. Especially in the domestic market. The series is doing okay, nothing special, but the majority of its success is coming from the foreign market.

Obviously they're doing better than barely breaking even, hence why they keep making them.

The DVDs sell fairly well, I hear.

Don't like the first one that much (too MTV-style, when MTV was still MTV, oh how the days have gone) but I like "Apocalypse" and "Extinction" was decent.

What I like most about them, they make the fanboys upset. Go, Mr Anderson, go!

I like the serie and i have some friends who don't give a damn about it, or some who actually love it. It's cheesy kung fu action againts zombies with a female lead. So yeah i like it. I don't except it to be amazing story telling. I just wanna see some reasonable action againts Tyrants, Zombies and whatnot.

No one is talking about the domestic exclusively. And even after marketing and pie cutting, we're still probably talking about it making somewhere around the range of twice as much as it cost. That's successful and better than 'okay'. 'Okay' would be applied if they were only taking in small profits with the hopes that media sales will help later. Plus, as someone else said, there's also still said home media sales to consider, which probably bolster it up even more.

So, yeah, it's a successful franchise despite your denial and rationalizations otherwise.

I liked the games, but was never a die hard fan of them. I actually enjoy the movies to be honest.

The series makes money in theaters. It also probably does great on DVD. You want to watch a movie and not sure what to get...a horror themed sci-fi/action movie is a good choice to kill an hour and a half. Even if it's forgettable and not exactly Citizen Kane, people will get the sequel when they want to waste another evening.

I doubt that there are many people who are huge fans of the films that are anxiously waiting for the next release.
