Deathstroke injected him with his super soldier serum ripoff then he did the rest himself.

Ultimate: After attending college in India, Fury enlisted in the military, where he was deployed into various conflicts such as the Kosovo Wars. He was later assigned to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Weapon X program in the original Gulf War. While transporting Wolverine, an Iraqi guerrilla ambush freed Wolverine from his cage, whereupon Wolverine slaughtered all the Iraqi fighters. Only one member of the US forces survived the ambush: Nick Fury. It was in this ambush that Fury lost an eye and from then on would wear an eye patch. Carrying Fury through the desert back to allied forces, Wolverine was thanked for his work by being repeatedly shot, caged once more, and returned to the battlefront. Still, a bond was forged between the two men.

616: Two serious injuries sustained during this time would have a serious impact in his later life: a grenade blast that began the slow deterioration of his sight in his left eye, and a landmine accident that led to Fury being inoculated with the Infinity Formula by Professor Berthold Sternberg in France.

It will be nice to know, but if they decide to keep it a mistery is ok with me...

Why do I even want to know? That would be waste of film time. Next we could ask why he shaves his head bald. Is it because it's receding or does he just like a shiny dome?

I thought Wolverine gouged it out too?

Either way, would be pretty cool to mention once (if) Marvel Studios gets back X-Men.

you might be thinking about AOA cyclops, wolverine gouged his eye out.

It would be cool if he were tortured by someone like Baron Strucker when he was younger. Maybe he was interrogated and refused to give in and then had his eye gouged out as punishment. This could set up an enemity between them, perhaps for a future Cap or SHIELD movie.

Nick Fury's eye is inside Odin's Treasure Room.

Was that supposed to be Fury's father in CA:TFA in the Howling Commandos group? I thought Nick Fury was the leader of that group, no? Anyway, I think it would have been nice to see the eyepatch explained in CA, otherwise I don't really think it's necessary to have it explained. I should really start reading some comics so I don't always feel so uninformed on these boards. But there you have it...my GA perception.

No. Because I thought there was a comic book titled Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos.

.... and because of that comic, since the character was black, you thought it to be him. Alas the comic book was Nick Fury, not Nick Fury's father.

If that was Fury's father they would've gone out of their way to tell you that, much like they did Tony Stark's father.

Ok, you are right. So what's the black guys name in CA:TFA?

It should be kept a secret to lend intrigue to the character.

You've all seen that Red Dwarf episode 'backwards' right? Where they land on a parallel Earth where everything is done backwards?
Well, Nick Fury fell through a space warp and landed there too, and made the mistake of playing a game of pool.

His first glimpse into the future by having used the Cosmic cube was a 24 hour non stop marathon of "Breaking Dawn".

Nick Fury should lose his eye in someone's drink. Or maybe down the toilet.
