Good post.

Yea The Chechen definitely respected him, or at least respected what he claimed to want to do. Gambol didn't and we know what happened to him. Maroni? Hmmm, I think he didn't really want nothing to do with Joker, his reaction when Chechen says "We hire the clown" in the restaurant says it all really. He probably thought what the Joker was saying was true, about them losing their balls since Batman emerged. But he still knew that in the end, it would all go pear shaped if they involved "The Clown".

But yea, I think there should be a mob war between the traditional mafioso gangs and the more "freakish" gangs. Maybe headed up by Black Mask? His gang could be like a cult and him being the cult leader they would do anything for him.

It seemed to me that some of the mob bosses were in favor of the Joker (The Chechen), while others were completely against him (Gambol), and yet a third group went with him at first, but at some point thought he went too far (Maroni).

I think this splits up the mob pretty heavily into different factions. This could lead to several things, certain freaks could take up the lead of these factions, or, there could be one who stands up and becomes the bridge between the freaks and the mob, and that would be Oswald Cobblepot in my opinion.

I have to disagree with you on this. I think the mob leaders had varying levels of intellect that had nothing to do with their crews. The underlings are simply going to follow their leaders. Gambol was so angry over the fact that anyone would steal from them that he couldn't think clearly. The Chechen only saw the short term solution in hiring the Joker. Maroni is the only one who saw the instability of the Joker and his reaction was hesitation. When the Chechen says "Put the word out, we hire the clown." Maroni gives him this look like "Are you on crack?" Once the Joker started becoming uncontrollable Maroni cut the ties. I think Maroni knew that going to see the Joker to claim their money was a trap. So he ratted him out to Gordon expecting a massive confrontation b/w the Joker and the cops after which Maroni would come back to pick up the pieces. Of course, he didn't count on Joker's ace in the hole Two Face.

Exactly. Maroni was always hesitant, he knew that him and The Chechen were walking into a trap. Great characterization for pretty small roles. Shows how brilliant TDK really was.

Is it safe to assume that if Maroni showed up to the meeting to get the money he was going to get killed by the Joker as well?

I think so. He probably guessed that and that's why he ratted him out to Gordon.

I think that Gambol was the smartest one, as far the mob's interests went - had they killed the Joker before he started the whole rampage, they would all be alive a lot longer.
The Chechen was very cool guy, but it was immensely stupid of him to trust the Joker.

I agree i never understood why everyone in the Mob all of sudden put their trust in Joker i mean the guy was stealing their money yet all of a sudden " yeah sure we will pay you to get rid of the Batman"

Gambol was the smartes he knew Joker was going to screw them over and din;t like the fact that he stole their money and came to them giving them orders

I'm pretty certain that Joker was going to off them both eventually. But i think Chechen calling him a freak actually made him lose his temper and maybe speed up his plan for him. You could sense the hurt and anger in his voice after that. "How about we cut you up into little pieces........."

Not everyone in the mob trust Joker. Gambol flat out didn't, look what happened to him. Maroni was hesitant and knew it would end badly, thats why he eventually ratted J out. The Chechen respected what Joker wanted to do, I wouldn't say he trusted him but he thought that he could get rid of their problems. Unfortunately for him being friendly to Joker doesn't mean you are his friend.

I think that the Chechen trusted him. Remember how surprised was he when the Joker started to pour gasoline over the money. "You said you're man of yer word". Trust probably isn't the right word... He thought that the Joker would be useful and in the same time, I think that he either underestimated him, or overestimated himself. He probably thought that the Joker wouldn't dare to cross him.

I felt bad for the Chechen. He was the only one who trusted and respected the Joker all thru the movie. Defending him against Gambol so Joker could have his say. Telling Maroni they should hire "the clown", and that he was right all along about Batman being the real problem.

And Joker ended up feeding him to his dogs.

When you think about it , it really made no sense how much Chechen respected and trusted the Joker. Seeing as how he is first seen being burned in business by a "freak"(Scarecrow) , youd think hed be the most wary of all. Shouldve learned his lesson.

I don't think the Chechen really trusted or respected the Joker very much. He simply saw the Joker as a tool, and once they got their money back, I think the Chechen would've killed Joker anyway.

Yeah, that's a big theme of the film. Everyone underestimates The Joker and in the end it's the clown who tears down Harvey Dent.
Gambol had the right idea all along, it was a shame he died so early.

I think he respected the fact that the Joker had balls to steal from them and come into a mob meeting all willy nilly. But I don't think he trusted him like others have said he thought he was just a tool and maybe underestimated how much influence the joker had, I mean didn't the chechon gang go with the joker after he killed him.

Yea I think he respected what the Joker was claiming he was going to do, kill Batman. And yea, maybe he was planning on offing J all along, maybe that's why he was sorta friendly with him when they spoke. Notice he was the only one who didn't laugh at him at the meeting, and when he went to meet him he greeted him all friendly like. But when Joker started to burn the money he couldn't hold his temper, and the dreaded f word slipped out. I also got the sense that the Joker was actually hurt and pissed off there, you can hear it in his voice. Well I did anyway.

After The Dark Knight... the mob lost half their money, had over 500 members locked up... at this point I'd say they'd be getting even more desperate. I'd prefer the main villian not be involved with them at all... just have them be in the background a bit as a loose cannon.

na there should be like bits from the mob like characters I wouldn't go with Sofia cos i dnt know she just didnt do anything for me. I mean what other mobsters are in the Batman comics that aren't well known.

I think Bane allying himself with the mob could work actually. My take would be Bane is a naturally muscular mexican wrestler like in the comics, framed for murder and locked away in prison. After many nights he has terrible dreams about bats ( a fear or something from his childhood). He then hears rumors of this Batman, and believes that defeating him will be killing his fear forever. Bane, still allowed some exercise, keeps in shape and finally attempts and succeeds in breaking out. He then travels to Gotham and allies himself with the mob, knowing he can gain a large some of money to take into hiding if he can kill the Batman. Set up some other villians and either have the movie end on a cliffhanger in which Bane breaks Bats back, or do it about halfway, then show the training Bruce endures to rehabilitate himself as he watched Gotham slowly slip back into the mob's grip.

perhaps do that later in the franchise as the perfect time for Robin to take over, isntead of Azrael like in the comics. A good way to make a spin off Nightwing movie.

I just re-read the Englehart stories from the '70's and thought perhaps the mob will be run by a corrupt city councilman like Rupert Thorne, who leads the hunt against Batman as well.

The mob should still be a big deal. Especially since they don't have a strong district attorney on their tales anymore

The mob should be dying. All the main bosses are either dead(Gambol, Chechen, Falcone, Maroni) or in jail(all the other guys at the table). Between Batman going after them even harder now both out of anger for taking Joker off the leash, and because the cops'(whom Batman won't be getting much help from either any more) main priority is now Batman himself. So Batman will be actively trying to destroy the mob once and for all.

There should also be a merging of the new freak uprising and what little is left of the mob. I've said this before but I'd really like to see Penguin and Black Mask as the new head mob-boss freaks. Penguin of course is now Gotham's new and best gun runner and racketeerer. Fencing stolen goods for all of Gotham's criminal underbelly. Throw in a great cameo of Killer Croc(as he's portrayed in the JOKER HC) as Penguin's main enforcer.

Black Mask would be Roman Sionis by day(anti-Bruce Wayne), cult leader/Gotham's new head Mob Boss by night. Both Bruce Wayne and Batman should have run ins with them. I'm thinking halfway through the movie Bruce, as Bruce, should figure out who Sionis is, ruin his businesses, and force Black Mask into hiding underground, as full time Black Mask. Fueling Mask's hatred for Bruce Wayne.

Maybe Falcone's sister can come in from Chicago or New York and try to keep what's left of Falcone's empire alive. Maybe like in Dark Victory. And the sons of Maroni could show up as well. Trying to keep their father's name alive as well.

This could be Nolan's last Batman movie. And while he doesn't have to outdo TDK, I think he and all of us would like him to go out with a BIG ****ing bang.

Falcone's sister? I'm not so sure about that. Black Mask would be my favorite out of the bunch. I don't think Nolan will use Penguin.
And I don't think the mob is dying either, although slightly wounded. Now I know the Mayor said, "18 months of clean streets," but that was canned as soon as the judge and loeb were murdered. Plus, Harvey, who is now unable to prosecute because he is dead. Oh and lets not forget that the city hates Batman right now, so crime hasn't lowered itself in any way.
