How to do a bad TV interview.

Reading up on this a bit more it appears there's something in Canadian law which could in theory make calling someone by the wrong pronoun a criminal offence of some sort. His issue seems to be how the law is written not with transgendered people. I can understand the concern with the potential forced usage of words. I don't quite understand the alt-right tag though. The guy seems completely reasonable in his objections and clearly knows how to get his point across. Frankly, even if you do disagree with him you can't argue he doesn't articulate his points well, which in all honesty is something that is missing in conversations these days. Too many people are talking over each other and not to each other, as demonstrated by that interview posted above. So as far as I'm concerned if he's helping to usher in respectful debate I'm all for it.

No, calling someone by the wrong pronoun is not a criminal offense. The bill in question that Peterson objects to is as follows:

"The bill is intended to protect individuals from discrimination within the sphere of federal jurisdiction and from being the targets of hate propaganda, as a consequence of their gender identity or their gender expression. The bill adds "gender identity or expression" to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination in the Canadian Human Rights Act and the list of characteristics of identifiable groups protected from hate propaganda in the Criminal Code. It also adds that evidence that an offence was motivated by bias, prejudice or hate based on a person's gender identity or expression constitutes an aggravating circumstance for a court to consider when imposing a criminal sentence."

Calling someone the wrong pronoun is not a crime. Harassing and persecuting someone based on their gender identity is. There's a difference, and it's plainly laid out in the bill.

Noted, thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah, but couldn't forgetting to use the correct pronoun be considered harassment? Say someone who is transitioning to be a female keeps getting accidentally called by male pronouns, is there anything stopping them from considering that harassment and filing charges?

No, there's nothing stopping them from filing charges. Just like there's nothing stopping me from filing stalking charges against my mailman for coming to my house every day. That's why we have courts, to determine the validity of the charges. But the law as it stands does not charge people for using the wrong pronoun. It's just people taking things to extreme hyperbole in order to make their case against it.

If. This is going down the same road of "concerns" that letting transgendered people use the bathroom of their choice will result in rape.

How (not) to behave in an interview. I really feel like Ollie right now.

You've been here less than a month, and post almost exclusively in politics and wrestling threads. So, what banned member are you? Do you happen to be a big fan of slushies?

Good for him. He doesn't have to.

People do not have to agree we are all created equal and not too long ago it was a not so common notion. Just saying that the litmus test of human decency is not dictated by what is or isn't legal to be said.

There was also more to that post, before he edited it. He originally had the line "Nor should a lot of people" added on. But he took that out. It reveals his true feelings, though.

Busted.

You don't have to agree with transgenderism, but if someone asks you to call them by a name that they prefer, just do it. The only person it will inconvenience is you and your prejudice.
