How to Market the Incredible Hulk???

True. Thats why I feel universal blew it so much, people have already seen him on screen he doesn't have that advantage anymore.
I disagree. Hulk has an advantage again. Look at how many WANT to see what he looks like now. People are pissed they cant get a true glimpse of him yet. Universal blew their shot. It wont happen now. With an all-star cast, legendary f/x/make -up artist along with the R&H CGI guys, we cant lose.

True, and with all the product tie-ins that are still easily marketable I'm sure we'll see plenty of HULK cereal, yogurt, Mountain Dew or Sprite etc...

That's nuts. Darth Vader has been seen before. It wasn't seeing Darth Vader on screen that sold the prequels, it was the journey. It's the same with any other remake, Psycho, Planet of the Apes, King Kong, or anything else. Marvel/Universal will need to market Hulk from some kind of new angle and not purely on the look. The trailers probably aren't going to show enough of his face that the general audience will notice the difference between the two. The only people pissed are the fans like us and since this board is barely active, I would say too many of the people hear care that much.

Hulk in 2003 had great marketed; the film was just bad. It was marketed as the kind of film it should be. You know the kind of film you expected when you saw HULKs tv spots and trailers? Thats the kind of movie uou should be getting.

the movie needs to change, not the marketing. You need market Hyulk as a huge scale action adventure monster movie ala KING KING or TRANSFORMERS. You also need to green light a script that is like that; not some boring character piece.

HULK had fantastic marketing plan. Aside form a huge list of product tie ins, it had a massive buzz-generating teaser with spiderman and an equal buzz creating super bowl spot; and a superb theatrical trailer.

THE FILM was the problem. UNIVERSAL did a fantastic job marketing it. Had they marketed the film for what it actually was...opening weekend woulda been around 40 million, and the total under 100.

That's true. It wasn't an action film as promised by the trailer, so people will be more cautious of that next time. WOM is going to carry this film to it's budget. Norton's face will carry some weight. The movie might get caught up in some other movies' release though and that could hurt it also.

bulls**t. Universal really f**ked up on the marketing, it doesnt matter if the trailers for the film showed what they wanted the Hulk movie to be, they knew from the get go that Ang's Hulk wasnt going to be like what they advertised and they still carried on, also, the same marketing a**holes were the ones that got the workprint leaked on the net. I want to know what a**hole saw the movie and thought "Set me free" would suit it and used it in the trailers, also, which a**hole decided to use unfinished CGI for a crappy Superbowl trailer.

...oh yeah, i also want to know which a**hole gave Entertainment Weekly the crappy looking plastic Hulk to use in their cover for the movie, its like they were trying to f**k it up.

I dont think you understand...if they marketed hulk like the film was....it wouldnt have broken 40 million opening weekend. The marketers job is to get the film to open well...24 million opening day. They did their job.

no, they sold the movie the wrong way, the reason we didnt get a sequel to Ang's movie wasnt cause the movie only made 230mill WW, its because of the Huge drop on the second week, that becuase of the guys who marketed it, yeah, if they had marketed it the right way, the Hulk wouldnt have made 60mill in teh opening weekend but it wouldnt have had the Huge ass drop either. You wouldnt have people going in thinking they are going to see a smash fest like the trailers promised. It still doesnt excuse them from using some ******ed things to promote that film. the EW cover was s**t, "Set me free" was like the worst song they could have used to help the movie and using unfinished CGI was the absolutely worst thing they could have done.

Universal have one of the worst marketing deparments in the industry. I hope Marvel get final approval on everything and dont let Unversal as* rape Hulk again.

Universals problem isn't marketing; its the films they green light. Evan Almighty? Chronicles of Riddick?

Either way; it would have been a huge bomb. If its gonna bomb; you need to milk it for all its worth.

Universals marketing is almost always hit or miss; the worst in the game was Warner Brothers from 04-06, but they have fixed it this year and are owning. I predict similar things for Universal next year.

Already in 07, Universals had over preformer from Knocked Up, which at a cost of 30 million, got 30 million opening weekend and is headed for a total of 150 million. Even Evan Almighty is gonna wind up with mroe money then most thought.

Also, Bourne Ultimatum is tracking HUGE and has had fantastic marketing, and AMERICAN GANGSTER's marketing has been spectacular.

They have probably pulled a w.b. and fired their marketing team and hired a sling of new younger guys; which bolds very well for 2008, which they have a number of films that could actually do very well at the box office with The Incredible Hulk and the Mummy.....though Universal NEEDS to move MAMA MIA...It opens against THE DARK KNIGHT which will be the biggest opener of 2008.

They move Mama Mia! to July 4th weekend...and their set for big things.

Universal still put Halo in development Hell, i hope you are right about Universal getting some new guys, i really dont want them to market TIH like they did The Hulk.

^I think you can defiently expect a similiary campaign; albeit probably a bit smaller; it's just this time the film be a lot like what is advertised.

Here's a way to advertise:

Destroy an old un-used building in a city and put police lines etc up and a sign saying "Damage caused by the Hulk" and in small letters "Summer 2008" or something like that.

Just an idea.:o

oh no, it's a *****in brilliant idea. I love it.

Gimme some more

And yes, Excel, MArekting was bad cause took everybody on the wrong foot.
People being pissed off cause they don't get what they have been sold...
They could have marketed the hulk more in line with the film, and it would have been a different story altogether.

The film is good or bad according to one's vision, nonetheless, it was bashed not only for the story, artistic drection, etc etc, but because it wasn't what have been sold to the public...
No matter how good are marketing stunt, if you sell another product, you're gonna get bashed...

Anyway...they ought to market it the same way; a lot like king kong ect. just try to make it open as big as possible so the good wom i assume itll get will carry over.

they should market the film like it really is, not some misleading bulls**t like they did with the first one, if they do, they will still get the big second weekend drop.

i am sorry but he doesnt look like plastic here :o
plus they used a lot of photoshop

its still a crappy photo and they could have used other pics. Any shot of Hulk in the movie looks better than that crap.

in terms of matriel, sure. I was talking about the size of it. They cant go with a subtle Batman Begins type marketing plan. CANT. Cause it wouldnt even do 90-100 million if they do.

A LOT of people will be waiting to hear on the word of mouth which I think should be good; so if they can pump out an opening over 40 million its a virtual lock to best the first, and if they can get 50 I;d say itll def. top 150 million.

IMO, they should do what 300 did, get the hardcore fans on your side first, its those guys that will go and see the movie 3 or 4 times, then work your way up. I dont think BB had subtle marketing, that thing was everywhere when it came out. I hope they dont use songs in the trailer like they did last time or Hulk, i hope they dont use unfinished CGI like last time and i hope the marketing deparment doesnt let one of its people leak the f**king thing on the net 2 weeks before the release of the film.

I'm shocked! I disagree with just about everything you say on the SR forums but I agree 100% with this post.

Do you guys think if a new Hulk pic had been relased in time for this EW issue, Hulk would have been up there instead of Iron Man seeing as how he's mentioned on the cover?

21022.jpg

No. Iron Man is only on the cover cause he is new. If you showed that to the public, the thing most would talk about would be indy and batman, and then when they look at iron man be like "oh...cool".
