The Dark Knight How will they handle the general public?

Exactly. We're like a year out, of course they're not gonna be marketing to the general public now. That'd be ludicrous. When we get closer, they'll just advertise it like a normal movie, possibly doing some cool stuff like Joker "taking over" a TV show or commercial.

That would be awesome. Have it look like a normal commercial comes on then have the Joker "break into" the commercial and do his own announcement. That would be pretty sweet.

I think something that would make this kinda marketing more mainstream is having The Joker turn up at an awards ceremony, armed with goons that line the stage. He could tell the crowd that some other actor or something was going to be giving away this award, but at the present said actor is incapacitated -- show dressing room of actor on big screen and he's stiff in his chair with a giant smile cemented onto his face.

Are there any award ceremonies in December?

The Golden Globes are in December. That's the only big one, I think.

Considering I had lunch with some people today who said "What, they're making another film?"

After a short talk about batman and robin, they commented on how "They can't hope to beat the original" in reference to the joker.

This will be a tough cookie to crack I imagine, but I guess they'll do the whole crap loads of trailers, billboards etc and saturate the public with awareness.

They'll handle the general public the way they've always done - couple of trailers, a crap load of tv spots, bunch of interviews, etc.

The viral campaign was something new but solely for the hardcore fans, I wouldn't expect anything as innovative for the general public.

I think the most part is appealing to general audiences with this new take on The Joker. If you can't sell The Joker to them, than the film will not do so well.

Sure, the majority of the fanboys here love this new Nolanized Joker. But a small percentage of us (including me) don't. If the general public side with the small precentage of us fanboys than I think things could be bad. G4 and alot of others both didn't like the thought of Ledger as The Joker or what he looks like. All my friends also don't like it either.

I think a trailer, a long 2 minute and 30 sec trailer would be the thing to show right now. Show us Joker, what he looks like fully, is it a chemical accident, self-inflicted, or just a accident period. Show us Dent, Maroni, Batman, Alfred, Batpod (God I hate that name), Rachel, and fight scenes galore. That'd get people pumped and maybe alienate a few others.

I don't think this movie will be as successful as "BB" just because of Nolan's take and reimagining of the Joker, but who knows...

Boom will follow up my post with something that would really be a great marketing move for this movie, because of it's originality.

*cue psychic powers*

For TV promotion, The Joker should hack into television networks during commercial breaks and give cryptic messages to people watching.

Funny story. My best friend went with me to see Batman Begins when it came out. He loved it and was shocked at how great of a film it was. The ending scene with the Joker card both made us talk about how the Joker will be done in the next film.

That same night I bought Batman 89 on DVD, and a few Batman comics (the first I ever bought) and we watched Batman 89. It had been a long while since I saw that film, had forgotten much of it - and I think it was his first time seeing it. We were left in awe at how badass Jack's Joker was and how perfect it was. We then got into arguing whose Joker was best: Jack Nicholson's or Luke Skywalkers. I did my best to defend Anakin's son :(

Though I have kept him up to date on TDK, and he loves what he has heard - my friend has always stated there is no way to top Jack Nicholson.

Well after yesterday, he stated to me "I think this may be a Jack Nicholson killer".

I think that is the response many mainstream movie goers will have.

Nolan has gone out of his way to make the joker different, not necessarily doing what is needed to represent him and this will alienate the public.

I'm not following you around, but why? It's instantly recognisable, different but not a million miles away from Jack

Yes, I am sure Nolan has been thinking "hmm - how can I make this character shocking" and not "hmm, - how can I make this character great".:whatever:

I would love to see this :(

I would also love to see Joker actually take control of the CW's air waves and have a good 15 minutes of screen time - possibly with a hostage. Though that would be hard to pull off, and plus all 3 people that watch the CW will already be seeing the movie anyway.

You don't think that didn't play any role in Joker's "new" look?

Really, no. And if it did - it was apart of "how can I make this character interesting".

Nolan is not the type of guy to shock us just for the sake of shocking us.

Deliberately different, yes, shocking, no. It doesn't even look very bad when whitened

If they did it during Smallville that could work awesome! Although that would be the same audience as who the viral marketing was directed to.

If they really wanted to do it for a different audience, they could during America's Next Top Model. Joker could kidnap Tyra Banks! Oo or...Joker themed photo shoot anyone? :oldrazz:

i would loooooove a B89 type hype again since i was only 2 when it came out and couldnt enjoy it.

but, its the curse of the sequel. it just isnt the first one (meaning B89, not Begins).

Seriously. Joker in GQ. They NEED to do that. The sheer hilarity and irony in Joker making a front-page appearance, no less a photo shoot in that magazine is just too good to pass up.

Too bad WB are idiots. :csad:

I would bet pretty strongly actually on the Joker appearing on EW (in fact if they were smart they would do a series of four covers, Batman, Joker, Dent, and maybe Rachel/Alfred?). It's pretty common for them to do that with big movie releases.

However I hope it only comes out the week of release. I know here we all clamor for more and more images of the Joker, but I want the first time I really see him...straight on, no blurry images...I want it to be fifty feet tall and in live action.

But from a marketing stand point that may not fly.

Better trailers. I did not think the BB trailers showen where that great. The international trailer was soooo much better.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but it is reasonable to think that Ledger will go out and about dressed up as The Joker and do this stuff? Its not like he IS The Joker, he still needs a script and everything...

I agree.
