His name was never ever really Joe Kerr. That was an alias he would take up sometimes... as a disguise or what have you.

1989 gavee a name and backstory to a character that was previously anonymous (outside of his moniker "the Joker"). It filled in information... it didn't "alter" it.

I'd even argue that filling in that information was a slight on the character.

Joker with an ambiguous (or non-existent) origin is the best Joker.

Jack Napier was a thug turned psychopath. Joker is a legend.

I used to feel strongly against '89s "backstory" for Joker and the fact that he shot Bruce's parents. I don't anymore and actually have grown to appreciate it a lot. But that's a conversation for elsewhere.

I don't think it is in any way analogous to the situation we are getting with "Domashev" anywho.

So Joker didn't have a backstory in the comics, and got one in the Movie.

Doom has a giant and fantastic backstory in the comics, and in the Movie it gets **** all over.

Well he did have a back story in the comics, although we don't know if he was telling the truth (I think the Jason Todd Red Hood story arc canonized it though). The movie origin was somewhat based on the comics, but they changed a bit.

I don't mind the name change, since it at least sounds Doom-y. I'm definitely more concerned that they screwed up Doom's character.

Basically, yes.

Agreed of course.

Joker does have a backstory in the comics but its been changed so many times. He was a failed comedian, the mob killed his family, he was the red hood and he was hitman. The only constant was Batman made the Joker in some accident where he was dipped in acid.

I mean, if we are getting into the nitty gritty of it, I can't say I would crucify the movie or the character for the name change alone. In concept it could be fine if by some chance he were to change it to Von Doom as part of this metamorphosis into super villain. Or if he were to find out his estranged gypsy parentage's last name was Von Doom and take it for himself.

However, all of this other ********. Anti-social: ****, blogger: ****. This is what seals the deal for me.

All it says to me is they aren't willing to make an attempt at going out on that limb for an already fantastic storytelling experience. A gypsy-born sorcerer, world-renowned super-intelligence in physics and engineering, dictator of an entire country with a self-inflicted disfigurement. That's the stuff I won't tolerate any dickery or toying with.

There's absolutely no room for grounded or mundane when it comes to Doctor Doom.

I like in the comics that Doom is Reeds rival in the scientific world. They are on a completely different level to everyone else with Reed just being slightly ahead. This rivalry breeds hatred and jealousy in Doom and pushes Dooms need to defeat Richards.

If (as it sounds) that's lost, then it is a shame.

Eh, I wouldn't mind removing the sorcerer aspect of Doom in adaptations. F4 is mostly science fiction, so adding in Magic would seem inconsistent. It works in the Marvel Universe with Dr. Strange and whatnot, but Doom just being a scientist and dictator works perfectly fine by itself.

That too. I mean, in all honesty its pretty petty, (Killian in IM3 comes to mind) but it's still a solid reason for any continued conflict. It'd definitely something that should be incorporated.

I disagree.

To me Doom is the dark twisted combination of Tony Stark and Stephen Strange. He isn't afraid to dabble... no not just to dabble in the dangerous and the obscure, but delve so far that his soul is lost and risks losing his life just for power and for revenge. Mysticism is necessary imo.

That's why this movie will probably fail for me.

So it's not A backstory but several different possible ones.

You are all over the place aren't you.

Doom in Spider-Man TAS and Avengers EMH didn't have mysticism and was portrayed very well. I think it can be done on film as well.

Marvel should sign a deal to return just Doctor Doom.

They have said that when Kinberg said the movie will pull from all Fantastic Four lore. There are going to be elements from the 616 universe. They however aren't adhering to one or the other and making changes to fit into their world.

Von Doom or Doomshev are both terrible and unrealistic names. Doomshev however sounds eastern European while Von Doom sounds like something from the nordic countries. Latveria is in eastern Europe so I see their rationale. In the grand scheme it won't matter what his name is. If it turns out to be a bad movie that might be nipicked. if its good name change will be quickly forgotten.

What else can you spin?

There should be a Montage scene of Doom uploading dozens of hacked nude pics of Susan set to the score from Bane's Blackgate speech.

Joker's backstory has been affectionally referred to as 'multiple choice.' Basically there are different stories, none of which we know are true or not. Which is essentially how it is in The Dark Knight.

Doom's use of sorcery and his drive to free his mother's soul is a huge part of what makes him so cool imo. Take that away and he's Doom Lite.

Maybe this Doom will try to free his mother's nude pics from the Galactus cloud.

This is one of the best threads on this entire message board.

If the Joker had visited this thread before he became an insane villain, he could've practised his comedy routine. There's always plenty of material as far as this movie is concerned. Then he might not have been a failed stand up comic.

If someone had come on these boards before BB and said Ra's Al Ghul would be a white guy with no supernatural Lazarus Pit who trained Bruce people would have rightly lost their minds, but in the context of the movie it worked.

Some of this stuff sounds unnecessary, but I still want to see the why of it.

What I can't understand is...how people can actually defend the blogger Doom idea.

What I can't understand is...people hear that Doom is an anti-social programmer who has a blogging identity and they more or less ignore the "anti-social/programmer" part and all they hear is "blogger" and somehow that becomes "internet troll".

He's not going to battle the Fantastic Four with blogging.
