This argument that this character can't be comparable to classic Doom is short sighted. Doom was not always the ruler and he did go to Empire State college with Reed Richards and Ben Grimm. Being a blogger and being a troll are two distinct things. What he's blogging about is also crucial. If he's just blogging about movies and video games that is gonna suck. However if he is blogging about his parents being killed and how he was forced to flee his home country. While coming off as some angry man who would love nothing more than revenge. I'm on board with that.

Last thing I'm not convinced Doom is the main villain. He and the Fantastic Four may be stuck in the negative zone. Which makes the containment suits we've heard about make sense. The movie could end with them getting out of the negative zone after finally working together and Doom saying something like screw you guys i'm out. I'm going home with the power he's always wanted.

Try to rationalize it away all you want.

The guy himself said Victor DOMASHEV is an anti-social programmer(i.e. magical computer nerd) who BLOGS under the online handle Doom.

That's bull*****.

The problem with this is there's absolutely no evidence the film-makers have any respect for the classic characters or any intention to make the characters of this film or future films similar to the classic characters.

With all the comments Kinberg and others have made, there has been a marked lack of comments regarding any respect for the classic characters. On the contrary, they have expressed open contempt for previous films that had at least some classic elements.

If they have the slightest interest in giving us classic characters, they should tell us that - we shouldn't presume their intentions based on wishful thinking.

They didn't even keep the name Von Doom. What does that simple fact tell us about their respect for and intention to give us the characters we want?

If we see them going in a completely wrong direction, it's not rational to say: "It's okay that that they're going the wrong direction because they could do a 180 and start going in the right direction later." They're going the direction they want to go and they're likely to continue on that path.

Galactus was in the cloud! And we're TOTALLY going to see him........later.

What I can't understand is...how people can actually defend the blogger Doom idea.

If you want to say that the idea of an internet blogger turning into a villian is a neat new idea, fine, go for that, no problem....but don't call him Doom, because that is about as far away from the character as you could go without making him instead a talking monkey. You want a villian that is a blogger.....good. But To take a character with the history of Doom and make him an internet troll....that's just preposterous.

Exactly. Instead of taking an iconic villain who has 50 years of history and basically, crapping all over him... why not create a completely original character?

We're not talking about superficial changes here. They're not just changing his costume or even changing the colour of his skin. They are completely changing the name, origin, history and nature of the character. He isn't even called Victor von Doom for ****s sake? It shows a DISTINCT lack of respect for the source material and the history of Marvels first family.

I fear we will never seen the Fantastic Four and their mythos done justice on the big screen. Jack Kirby is rolling in his grave. It's a disgrace and i can't understand how any fans of the Fantastic Four can defend this project.

The Incredibles will have to do. Luckily enough it's one of the best superhero films ever. It's a shame the F4 didn't get that kind of respect and love.

They have said that when Kinberg said the movie will pull from all Fantastic Four lore. There are going to be elements from the 616 universe. They however aren't adhering to one or the other and making changes to fit into their world.

Von Doom or Doomshev are both terrible and unrealistic names. Doomshev however sounds eastern European while Von Doom sounds like something from the nordic countries. Latveria is in eastern Europe so I see their rationale. In the grand scheme it won't matter what his name is. If it turns out to be a bad movie that might be nipicked. if its good name change will be quickly forgotten.

Well I think people would have far fewer problems about this, if they made one of the B-list villains, like Wizard (who seems to have the same obnoxious personality as an internet troll) or Mad Thinker (who seems to dabbling hacking anyway) fit this role, rather then Doom. It lets Doom be a growing threat in the back ground, while the FF deal with a starter villain. Going with a water down Doom right away again, seems like the biggest mistake they are repeating.

SMDH at people rushing to the defense of angry blogger Doom.

Guys, I just heard a new rumor... Domashev will be dressed in a pink tutu for half of the movie and will be featured in a major musical number composed by Lady Gaga.

(waits for defenders)

Maybe in the next Batman movie they should change the Joker's name to Bubba Ray. Names don't matter right?

if its good name change will be quickly forgotten.

It's not a good name change and no it will not be forgotten, no matter how much you try to convince yourself otherwise.

You should really wait and see how that works out before criticizing. Who knows, it might be amazing!

At least you won't see his poker face. :o

True, true, we could all be misjudging it, just like with Heath Ledger's Joker (which is a precisely analogous situation).

Actually this change makes a lot of sense. Since fans responded negatively to the original intention to make Dr. Doom a woman forestalling Fox's sincere efforts at diversification this provides an opportunity to simultaneously appeal to both the transgender and teenager demographic segments while enlarging the general audience by favoring homogenous pop music culture. Further, it's faithful to the source in that Doom has been shown in the comics to be a connoisseur of fine paintings and as a lover of art it makes sense to extend that to the art of dance. It's also consistent with the leaked imagery picturing Dr. Doom in a sari. Further, nothing about Domashev's preference for female attire precludes him from becoming a magic practicing despotic ruler of a small nation at some future point in time.

I love that he does this, and then in the very next sentence says the change to the source material is better. And then makes up some crap rationale for it a sentence later.

"They're both terrible but the *****ting on the source material is way way better"

Even getting the name wrong twice. It's Domashev. Not Doomashev.

I doubt that's Fox's rationale though. I mean, you're right: "Von Doom" isn't a very stereotypical Eastern European name (IIRC "von" comes from German naming patterns), whereas Domashev sounds like it could be Eastern Slavic (it's actually listed among Russian surnames on Wiki). But I really don't think Fox would change an iconic name just to be more accurate (besides it's not like Latveria is a real country; and there is such a thing as immigration). I think it's more likely they appropriated the Doom part of his name to try and give legitimacy to this blogger/hacker/programmer idea, and that they had no hesitation in doing so because they have no desire to stick close to concept of the original character.

Why are you hating? That sounds like a good idea, give it a chance.

Just wait until the end of the movie or the sequel. You'll all see he'll become the Doom we all know and love.

Latveria is not real but the geographic location in Marvel's history is near Romania, Serbia and that is real. You'd have to assume they did for that reason, I don't know for sure obviously. Those eastern European lands were hit very hard by war and gave birth to numerous war criminals. That were wanted by World Courts for the crimes against humanity. Its the kind of place that would give birth to something like Doom.
