wooow. thats a very intereseing idea. and it could work.To try and steer things away from the whole "white skin VS white facepaint" argument for a moment, perhaps its time to raise an old idea that hasn't been discussed in a while. What if The Joker's face is a tattoo?
I don't have a problem with The Joker applying white make-up purely because it's different from the comics in itself. I've said before that I'm okay with changes to the comics, so long as they make sense, and don't hurt the character. My problem lies in the fact that it COULD hurt the character. The white make-up itself isn't the problem, it's the fact that it can wash off. I hate the idea of The Joker locked up in Arkham, with his facepaint washed off. Unlike Batman, The Joker's face IS his mask. He shouldn't be able to wash off his "mask" and be "normal". The Joker shouldn't have an alter ego., if you will.
But IF we're not getting The Joker with his entire body bleached white, perhaps an alternative could be that he has tattooed the ghoulish clown design onto his face? That way, you get the same practical effect as skin bleaching - a "mask that can't come off".
And in one way, this could be MORE effective than bleached skin in the context of this film. Even if his skin is bleached, then we have to accept the red lips and black eyes as make-up that can be removed. After all, a chemical bath is only going to give him the bleached skin. And although both have their detractors, the "panda eyes" and "messy lips" have grown on me to the point that I think the face of Ledger's Joker would look naked without them. If his face were the product of a tattoo, the eyes and lips would be as permanent as the white skin. And it would be another nice touch to the character: it would take a real hardcore nutjob to mutiliate themselves in such a fashion.
Of course, the idea does have its setbacks. I don't know what the logistics of getting such a tattoo are. It could be that getting that much ink seared into your face is just as outlandish as a chemical bath that bleaches your skin white. I'm not necessarily saying this is what I want to get, or think we're getting. I just thought it was an interesting possibility you might want to discuss.
but i think....this is not a tatoo. only because in the knife pic you can see that it is nto complete white. wouldnt he have the whole face white?why would there be little spots of normal skin?
maybe it is true. no matter what....thats a very interesting idea.
