I Know You'll Have The Dack Stecked Against The Wrestling Thread

I didn't see enough to be of much use. A tv station up here started airing the UWF just before they were bought out by Crockett (I'd say the last month/month and a half...in hindsight, the acquisition/merger was probably done by that point). My memories of the UWF are pretty vague overall. I just recall recognizing a lot of their wrestlers either from reading about them in Pro Wrestling Illustrated, or from having watched them in other territories. A lot of guys from World Class, a few from Crockett, a couple from the AWA, etc.

I do remember Jim Ross running down the card of an upcoming house show, and mentioning that Ric Flair was going to be there, defending the NWA World championship. If I recall correctly, he was going to be facing Dr. Death Steve Williams. As a kid, I always thought it was kinda cool whenever Flair showed up in another territory to defend his title.

As far as their roster (particularly guys I hadn't seen previously in other territories), of course Dr. Death stood out to me, as well as Sting, Eddie Gilbert and Terry Taylor. Dark Journey was managing the Missing Link at the time...I thought she was hot. A Black valet was unusual for any territory in those days.

As for the booking and angles/storylines, since I only saw less than two months of it, I didn't have enough time to get a grasp of how good or bad it was.

Was this during or after the time when Junkyard Dog and Ernie Ladd along with other viable top black talent were fixtures in the territory?

That 8-Man Tag between CHAOS and Bullet Club was above the quality of the usual house/Road To show multi-man Tag. And Okada got the pin over Fale so are they setting up the blow-off match for Invasion Attack or was that the blow-off?

Main event time! Goto vs. Ibushi in the New Japan Cup Final. This should be really good.

After. The little bit of the UWF I saw was in 1987. JYD left for the WWF in 1984 (the year I started watching wrestling). Ladd retired in 1986.

Hell yeah Kota Ibushi!!! Great way to end the tournament and great effort from Goto and Ibushi!

Oh ****, Ibushi is going after AJ Styles and the IWGP Heavyweight Championship!!!! :wow::wow:

Kota Ibushi won the 2015 New Japan Cup! And dat trophy....

Thinking back on it, why is it that all of the trophies that have been presented from in-ring competitions within the WWE have been so crappy looking when compared to the ones offered in other promotions?lol

There's like 100 reasons behind that. Main reason is because NJPW actually treats wrestling as a legitimate sport whereas WWE is both a bad variety show and "sports entertainment." Simple as that.

Treating it like a legitimate sport is stupid.

Suzuki deserves it, hard to tell since he's been stuck feuding with Yano for the better part of the past two years.

From Foley's FB Page:

THE RESULTS ARE IN...AND THEY SAY YES! YES! YES!

A couple days ago I asked you to name your top 5 CURRENT favorite wrestlers, and the response was as swift and surprising as a flying knee! Over 4,000 comments! An hour's-worth of your comments was used as a representative sample of your most beloved wrestlers. Here is a top ten list based on those responses, each of these wrestlers appearing most-frequently in your various top-five favorites. This list is in descending order from most to least votes:

1 - Daniel Bryan
2 - Seth Rollins
3 - Dean Ambrose
4 - Bray Wyatt
5 - Dolph Ziggler
6 - AJ Styles
7 - Kevin Owens
8 - Cesaro
9 - Randy Orton
10 - Finn Balor

So there you have it! It seems The ‪#‎YesMovement‬ is as strong as ever! Keep in mind this represents people's FAVORITES, so these are subjective submissions - this is not a top ten BEST of all time list (we'll save that for another day). This shows who people are really emotionally invested in right now. You might find it interesting that Sami Zayn barely missed the top ten and Paige is currently the most-liked Diva.

These attached paintings of Daniel Bryan are by Rob Schamberger, who's contributing to the ‪#‎WrestleManiaDreamVacation‬ - he'll create an original 20x32 print of the winner's favorite pro-wrestler. That is but one of many increasingly amazing raffle prizes, and time is quickly running out, Facebook followers. So enter now! Tix are $2 (5 ticket min), it's the trip you've always dreamed of, and proceeds go to RAINN. This is definitely numero uno on the top ten list of ways for a fan to get to 'Mania.

More details here:http://wrestlemania.rainn.org

Have a nice day!

That match with Sakuraba might've honest to God been the most interesting non-G1 match he's had in God knows how long. Really want to see the Marafuji match.

Oh no, Scott Hall's son, Cody, is doing the 2Sweet sign! He better watch out or WWE will try to sue him! Because he's apart of the most over faction in wrestling and WWE will do anything to stop something that's popular that isn't from them!

:o

Worse than that, WWE can sue Cody for copying Scott Hall's DNA, which is the company's intellectual property (a precondition for a Hall Of Fame induction).

Looks like we have a new female wrestler to be in NXT from Lance Storm's school:

We can confirm that Australian female wrestler KC Cassidy has signed a developmental deal with WWE and will report to.the WWE performance center in April.

Lance Storm said a student of his was signed to a contract on MLW radio a few weeks back and we got conformation it was KC Cassidy. She had a tryout with WWE back in August and was awaiting a visa clearance to be able to move to the states.

KC recently said goodbye to her fans at the latest Melbourne Championship Wrestling show the other day.

I re-watched the Boss Man Vs. Undertaker HIAC recently. I think it gets sh**ted on too much mainly because neither Undertaker or Boss Man were crazy enough to take a "Holy sh**!" bump. The match was okay for what it was. It had blood, was kept short, and they actually used the Cell as a weapon unlike the gimmick matches of today.

Kudos to The Undertaker though. As soon as he heard the audience start to sour on the match, he went straight to the finish.

What did you guys think of The Big Boss Man being hanged? I thought it was a cool visual, but seeing how The Undertaker tried to commit attempted murder, I can see why the ending was cut from the DVD re-release of the PPV. I can only imagine how many kids were traumatized by witnessing Boss Man's would be execution. This is arguably one of the best cases of McMahon pushing the envelope too far.

THE RESULTS ARE IN...AND THEY SAY YES! YES! YES!

10 talents right? And not a Roman Reigns in sight.

Exactly. I find that level of kayfabe to be silly. Good riddance to it. It still baffles me that there was apparently a time when a large percentage of grown people thought they were watching real fights.

It was a different time when people thought the sport was legit so I can see why promoters and wrestlers wanted to protect the business. Of course, none of that matter once McMahon killed kayfabe in 1989 by revealing it was pre-determine to save money although it still took another 7 years before The Clique pulled the curtain down to quit fooling the rest of the fans.

I'm kinda curious, have any of you guys been watching wrestling long enough or have the channels necessary to watch Mid South wrestling/UWF?

I'm Incredibly curious after enjoying Crockett's Mid Atlantic region booking because to my understanding the format of shows like Raw, SD, Impact, Nitro
Etc was innovated by Bill Watts whom booked Mid-South/UWF back in the day.

Did you guys like the product Bill Watts booked at the time?

I know horror stories came out about Watts during his small time working in Turner's WCW especially criticism for saying offensive things in the press, doing shows in darkly lit arenas, making it "illegal" for wrestlers to use the top rope in matches, and having the wrestlers be forced to be slammed on concrete floors when outside the ring but overall Ive heard good things about when he was booking prior to that from a quality standpoint.

The UWF/ Mid-South was great stuff in the 80's. Remembered stuff such as the First Family of Sting, Rick Steiner, Eddie Gilbert, and Missy Hyatt or the rivalry between the Rock N Roll Express and the Midnight Express. Bill Watts had great foresight about Sting and the Express tag teams. Their rivalry started there before they went to NWA/ Crockett.

Lots of wrestling in the 80's - WWF, NWA, AWA, World Class, Florida, Memphis, and Mid-South/ UWF.
