Well, in all fairness, the only reason third party officials do not appear corrupt is because they do not have the power to be. Major campaign donors have no desire to give them money as they have no chance of winning, and they don't win 9/10 times so they have no power. Its not the party or even the person that creates corruption. The system does, in my opinion.

I don't think the system creates corruption. If a politician allows the system to get into their head as if they're above it, it's still their weakness.

I think the problem is, special interest lobbies have become a part of the system as opposed to those trying to manipulate the system (its a subtle difference). And once they weaseled their way into the system, it became inherrently corrupt. Granted, some of it is weakness on the part of the politican...but now-a-days, because of what I said above, unless you are willing to play by their rules...you will be a one term-er and then gotten rid of. So you say "I'll play ball, just to be able to make a difference." but you inevitably get sucked in.

I think Matt makes a good point. But I think politicians inevitably become corrupted by the system. That doesn't necessarily make them corrupt.

Also, just because a politician caters to certain special interests, that doesn't mean their constituents oppose that. Having worked in a couple Congressional offices, I've fielded calls from many who want so-and-so to support such-and-such an agency, and they do threaten to pull their support if that politician doesn't support them. That's just how it is.
