If they did "get it up" for a girl and reproduced with them then they are not gay. And second I know Ian has a sense of humor and I love him for that. He is absolutely hilarious. Having Magneto and Xavier sleeping together would just be weird. And if all characters were like the actors, then they wouldn't be characters but just play themselves.

If someone is sexually attractive to the same sex they are a homosexual. It has nothing to do if they can or can not get aroused by the oppisit sex. Are bisexuals not gay and straight?

No... it's not a choice at all. You are who you're born to be, and trying to repress your own desires will only ruin you mentally in the end.

I imagine it's part of the reason why Ian McKellan was so drawn to work on X-Men in the first place (apart from having worked with Bryan Singer before on Apt Pupil), because the mutant X-gene is a perfect metaphor for being homosexual.

Imagine if there was a serum invented that would "cure" homosexuality? I think issues like that will be a big part of X3's appeal.

Not understanding something is different from being opposed to the very idea... I'm neither homo- or bisexual, so I can't pretend to completely understand what it's like either.
