If RDJ gets too old, what do you want?

What should be Iron Man in mcu's fate/face?

  • Killed off

  • Recasted

Personally, as simply a fan of the films and never having been invested in the comics or its characters, I'm really not fond of the recasting idea. If the actors grow too old or don't want to return, I think writing them off (whether by simply retiring them or killing them off) would be my choice. As for their superhero alter egos, they could either retire them along with the characters (at least for a while), or have them be passed on to another character (Peter Parker to Miles Morales, Steve Rogers to Bucky Barnes, or what have you).

I understand that for most fans, the super hero alter egos are tied to the original characters in a way that it would seem like blasphemy to have them disappear from the MCU, but I think one problem with the MCU that the comics universe doesn't have is that time basically passes in real time. For the most part, time in the MCU has been running parallel to the real world. As we get older, the characters get older, and Tony Stark isn't eternally youthful. So would it make sense for him to be recast every 10 years, hovering around in the 35-50 age range?

And while comics fans may be invested in many of these personalities, before the MCU popularized these characters, the general audience were never too familiar with the people behind the masks, let alone the masks themselves. Sure, many knew of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, but did they know that Steve Rogers is Captain America or that Tony Stark is Iron Man? They may not even have known that an Iron Man existed at all. I think that if new characters that are likeable and charismatic are introduced as "replacements", the audience will latch onto them. And I think Marvel has built up enough goodwill that audiences will be willing to give them a chance to show themselves worthy.

I mean, there's no doubt that losing RDJ/Tony Stark would be a huge set back for the MCU, but once they lose RDJ himself, I don't think a recasted Tony Stark would give the MCU any clear advantage over another character taking over the Iron Man alter ego. If anything, it'd be a jarring change and it would be much harder to accept that a completely different person is supposed to be the same character. I'm aware that Feige has said that the current plan is that they want to go with recasting, so I'm just stating my opinion here. But personally, as a continuity nut, I've already been a bit jarred by the recasting that they've done for Bruce Banner and Rhodey, and those were relatively minor characters compared to Stark, and both were replaced after just one film. RDJ has now been Stark for years in multiple films; I personally think that would make any recasting all the more jarring.

TL;DR. I'm not excited about the recasting idea.
thank you.

They'll lay him to rest for a bit. But lwts be honest. Eventually they'll need to bring IM back.

I'd be up for them to forget Iron Man and make another hero the face of the MCU Phase 4. Then in Phase 5 soft reboot the MCU. Have all the events that happened in the past still canon. But cast younger actors for the acyors whose contracts expired, retired and maybe...end ip in a better place. Maybe change the dates it took those events to happen. Maybe instead of over the span of decades. It happened in a few years. Thus the characters didnt age much even months maybe. I think the audience can suspend disbelief for atleast a little to believe that.

Plus after Phase 4 I can imagine people will have had a long enough break from Iron Man and whatever other characters they lay to rest post Infinity Wars.

Tony dies, but is resurected as a JARVIS style AI. RDJ continues to play the role of Stark, but now as a mentor to the new Iron Man, the son he never knew he had.

Very different and cool idea!

I'll get some flak for copying the X-Verse, but I want to see a Time Stone (infinity stone) style time-travel event (involving Kang?) where we go back to warn a pre-Iron Man Tony Stark who has to reunite the Avengers in preparation for Thanos.

Just adapt Timeslide and Heroes Reborn, that will save the MCU :o

Okay, first of all. I'm not talking about "saving" anything. MCU has a long, long, long way to fall before it's in need of any saving.

Second of all, there's plenty of story telling left to do before any recasting even needs to be done. Inhumans is the first film after Infinity War. Between Inhumans, Dr Strange sequels, GotG sequels, any more Thor sequels Hemsworth wants to do and Captain Marvel, we might not even need to see an RDJ replacement until 2030.

But when 2030 comes, and people are craving a bit more Tony Stark, what's the problem with incorporating a little time travel into the mix? There are several vessels for that already planted in the Marvel Universe (infinity stones and Kang and a few others).

Timeslide and Heroes Reborn suck. Don't write off time travel because of two ****** examples. DoFP (comic and film) is phenomenal. Mortal Kombat 9 also did a bang up job at a reboot in the same vein. Flashpoint and Terminator are great examples of the concept.

Characters will be put to rest but... No, they are going to recast. Other properties may be given more prominence but they aren't going to go "real time" and put things out to pasture in any "final" way. Writing should be on the wall since they have recasted some parts, one major one, already and likely will again in the future.

If they re-cast then actually Johnny Depp as Tony Stark/Iron Man would get my vote

Replace IM with the Ruski version - Crimson Frickin' Dynamo!

You mean Mickey Rourke lol? I think he burn his bridges with Marvel now. He say bad things about making Iron man 2. He not happy with how they cut his scenes he say he work hard on.

Well, there have been over a dozen Crimson Dynamos and another three or four Titanium Men, so if you really wanted a Russian you easily could. I see no reason to do this though.

Rourke's character was called Whiplash, anyway.

Tony Stark recast with Yayan Ruhian and Steve Roger recast with Iko Uwais, this will surely attract

God no. Iko for Steve sure but John cho would be better for Stark than yayan.

Actually John would be a really good, interesting Tony Stark

Replaced. But let the character stay off screen for a few years.

NO ONE CAN REPLACE RDJ AS IRON MAN!!!!

...Only if you have never read a single comic book and you are familiar with Iron Man's character only from movies. For true Shell-Head fans like me, Downey Jr. never nailed the role the way it should be. His Tony Stark is way too superficial and corny. Stark in comics was way more darker, interesting, multifarious, and complex. Tony Stark should be like Don Draper, but Downey Jr. plays him as a Charlie Sheen. Not to mention, Downey Jr. had only one good Iron Man movie out of three and one terrible Avengers sequel. Personally, I think that Jon Hamm would've been a much better Tony Stark. Jon Hamm has the "rough guy" persona which Stark always had in comics. He doesn't have women-like mannerisms like Downey does, and he is way better with emotions than Downey Jr. Watch the ending for Mad Men. That's comic book Tony Stark right there.

Stark existed before RDJ, and he'll exist for long after. Recast.

You do what any or most studios would do for a character: recast them. We're gonna see all of these characters eventually played by someone else eventually, maybe in the fifth iteration of the MCU. But yeah, just recast him.

judging by how he's drawn in the current iron man run, I have it narrowed down to Josh Hartnett or Bradley Cooper (finally doing more than voicing a character). originally, I expected Colin Farrell.
