I'm thinking about joing the "Military".

The only thing about the armed forces that looks appealing to me is the training. No way am I going to some foreign country to shoot people but I'll do all that 4am wake-up, push-ups, running and stuff.

My father served in the Air Force and I've always been told it's the reason why he's crazy. I still wanted to join though and I almost got in but because I have some health problems they didn't accept me. So I'm sort of in the same boat. I've gone to school but... well I'm currently thinking trying to join the service again. What luck that I find such an informative thread, eh...

sure, if you want to listen to a bunch of asinine generalizations and contradictory statements from some fascist who preaches about the army protecting our freedoms while presuming to tell everyone here who has the right to post and who doesn't.

I'm not a fascist and none of my statements have been contradictory. I don't presume to tell anyone who has a right to post what. SSH has no rights, everything here is a privilage. Common sense dictates that people thinking of joining the military should still take advice from those in the know, and not those that aren't. Like you. :)

Are ya done? Ya, yer done.

Did the marine happen to mention you get treated like **** for like the first 5 years? Even then it dont get much better unless your an officer or 20 year man. Im sure he mentioned 30 days vacation a year youll never get to use too. Ask him about basic training and what its REALLY like. Im sure hell tell you he dont remember very well alot of Sgts and recruiters seem to "forget" it. Im not saying its bad just make sure you dont take everything he says face value and know what your getting into.

No you don't. You get treated like **** most of the time. It's life, it builds character and keeps you from being a big ***** your whole life. And I've taken 30 days a year, PLUS major and not so major 4 day weekend holidays about 9 months out of every 12. Boot camp sucks ass, and it's worth every minute. And any Marine worth his salt will tell you how ****ty the experience can be, and how life changing and great it is at the same time for the rest of his life. That's why not everyone can be a Marine... that's why we're of the elite. And people with attitudes like the one you just displayed are not needed nor ever wanted in the Marine Corps... it would only serve to bring the world's finest military organization to the ground.

The Marine Corps is older than America is for a reason.

and this is the reason why you ask military people about the military...everyone else is speaking from second hand information that may not be correct

the military system hasn't changed really and plenty of people who have been through the experience have said what it was like. it reminds me of stockholm syndrome at times. if you use that system on some one who wont break to your will because their's is stonger, there is always going to be trouble.

If this type of mind numbing thinking is what you like, join the marines cause this dude is a 100%. No wonder I hated you ****ers.

again, what advice have I given C-$? you've got this attitude that you're somehow better than people who haven't served in the military. you call us

USMC said:
a bunch of internet geeks who've never even served their country and probably not done much else worth noting in their short lives

and spout off rhetoric

USMC said:
There is a feeling of brotherhood and personal accomplishment that you will have for the REST of your life. THAT is what seperates the Marines from everyone else.

as if we're incapable of having a sense of personal accomplishment. you say that you don't presume to tell everyone here who has the right to post and yet

USMC said:
Only the people that have served in the military should be ale to give C-$ some kind of sound advice

so hippie_hunter? your posts are irrelevant according to USMC. same goes to anyone here with family in the military but who haven't served themselves. C-$? don't listen to your friends and family. sure they know you far better than USMC and would naturally have a greater insight but it doesn't matter. they haven't served in the military so their opinions aren't valid.

Serving your country... putting your personal life on hold and possibly in danger so that everyone else in this country can say and do what they want and sleep soundly with their iPods and superhero movies...

who exactly do you think you're protecting us from? you call the Marines the world's finest military organization as if military might were something to be proud of. do you think the civilians in Haditha would agree with you? how about the 9 demonstrators killed outside the Al-Rashid complex that Marine Staff Segt. Jimmy Massey wrote about?

here's a moment you must be proud of - it's a clip from CNN's Fit to Kill featuring US Marines executing an Iraqi to the cheers of fellow Marines.

http://rapidshare.com/files/3155957/iraqiwar.wmv.html "I mean, afterwards you're like, hell, yeah, that was awesome. Let's do it again."

the point is if I want to be a cop I ask people who know something about that line or work.
If I want to be an astronaut I go talk to people who know about the program.

There are reports of Police brutality all the time. Does that mean I should stop supporting the police???? Should I flee everytime I see a cop since they have this need to beat on black people????
There are gonna be some mistakes made in war, there are gonna be some bad apples in the group.....should we hate the whole organization on the account of a few members.....

as I posted earlier I agree that C-$ should be selective as to whose advice he takes. however that doesn't give USMC the right to talk down to those users who aren't in the military.

but he has a point. This place is very anti administration and they take it out on the military. The Op asked for opinions since he was thinking about joining the military. Then several people started posting false information or information based on what they see in tv, movies or the news.

USMC talks like the typical Marine. I take it you dont deal with a lot of military or marines. He came on the defensive because of people bad mouthing the military....

I understand why he would feel defensive but just as some were making disparaging remarks towards the military, others were being supportive of it. so to simply start attacking based solely on whether users have or haven't served in the military regardless of what they posted seems asinine.

What I'm saying, and what I think USMC is saying, is not that you only need take advice from people who were in on whether or not to join, but if you want a realistic picture of what it is like to serve, you need to get that from someone who has actually served.

My boyfriend is in the Navy, and I have some idea of what it's like because it affects me, but I don't know a lot of details, and not being interested in serving myself, there are question that someone who is interested in serving might want answers to that I don't know (because I've never asked him). I can only guess or extrapolate from what I do know.

Also, it's good to talk to someone who either is serving or who has served recently (in the last 10-15 years). The military has changed a lot in the last 30 years, so the experiences someone's father or uncle had during service during the Viet Nam era are not necessarily reflective of what it is to serve today (remember, for example, that many men who served during the Viet Nam era did not choose to serve - that makes a big difference).

damned Village People messed it up for the Navy

if you join the military, DON'T JOIN THE MARINES!! Join the Air Force, or the Navy . . . and don't join 'for the chicks' . . . didn't you see the recent Simpson's and Family Guy episodes!?!?!?! They both had anti-military jokes throughout the eps, and they make a lot of sense . . . . anyway, you'll be much less likely to be killed if you're Air Force or Navy, and if you have half a brain, that's the only way to go . . . .

oh, and as far as the GI bill goes, they will only REIMBURSE you for college, meaning that you have to come out of pocket first . . . . be careful of how they word shyt, man . . .

Yeah man, listen to the simpsons and family guy, not people with actual military experience!
