I'm not going to list every speculative possibility, but do people think this would cause Sony to speed up, delay, or cancel the film?

If it's even still in the pipeline of course.

It's gotta hurt for Sony to have a film so similar in premise release two months earlier than Sinister Six. And especially with such a great cast. It's going to be interesting to see what happens next.

Exactly what Marvel Spider said. If SS does really good, or receives enough recognition from the general public, people are just gonna hate on the S6 when it comes out and say that Sony copied off DC by doing a villain team-up film too.

I think Sinister Six is sinking into a hole now because of this. Warner Bros were pretty speedy with their Suicide Squad plans, too. It's been known since last year right around now that Sony was going to do a Sinister Six film. That whole time-nothing. I don't think that would have helped them much, since the release date is still the release date and that's a big smudge.

I've been a huge Spidey fan for years but after the horrendous way that the Spidey franchise is being handled by Sony, I'd rather spend my money on a Suicide Squad movie rather than the Sinister Six... Sony just doesn't get it and can't make a decent Spidey movie worth a damn...

It could also compel them to get a move on, given the hype that film is getting.

I hope Sony just cancels it outright. Sinister Six is a recipe for disaster. Sony has proven that they have no idea what they're doing while Disney, Warner and Fox have all proven that they do. Even outside of CBMs, Universal has The Fast and the Furious, Viacom has Transformers and Lions Gate has The Expendables alongside The Hunger Games. Sony is a company that's sitting on a massive IP goldmine with all the Playstation first party games that could be adapted as films or spun-off to tell original stories with the same characters in the same universe but instead only manage to release decent James Bond films.

Every studio makes great stand alone pictures but Sony needs to look harder at its franchises and actually make great films that are also profitable. Sony Pictures Classics releases some great films but they're all either direct-to-video or limited release. In fact, the best movie that Sony made in a good long while wasn't even playing in any theater by me and I live near a major city. (Which by the way is Smashed.)

And keep in mind that Disney gets all the merch revenue from Spider-Man while also leasing Bond from Danjaq and MGM and Men in Black from Malibu Comics which is a subsidiary of Marvel which is in turn, owned by Disney. This means that the only movies which Sony fully owns the full IP rights to are their smaller art house films and we all know how much people want to buy action figures for Captain Phillips, Smashed and Before Midnight.

Said art house films can't exist unless Sony manages to put up their big tentpoles and turn a profit on them or else they'll cease to be a major studio and become a second tier player like The Weinstein Company or Starz. My advice is to sell Spider-Man back since Sony damaged the brand, fire Pascal and Arad who've been driving the film division into the ground and adapt certain Playstation films as tentpoles like Syphon Filter, Killzone, Shadow of the Colossus and Uncharted. I'd still hold on to Men in Black but try to release more sequels for the series.

I'd also cut the electronics department. Stereos aren't really bought anymore and Walkman lost to Apple's iPod. Getting rid of Vaio was good but Sony really needs to focus more on what they know is profitable, namely Playstation

Is Sinister Six even still happening?

What characters will be in it? Because I mean...ASM 2 didn't really set up that many characters. Yeah Rhino was in it for like 2 minutes. But I mean...Norman Osborn was barely on screen either.

It's gotta hurt for Sony to have a film so similar in premise release two months earlier than Sinister Six. And especially with such a great cast. It's going to be interesting to see what happens next.

What will also be a problem is that Sony have the problem that the budgets of the Spider-Man films have been going up despite their desire to get them under control and bring them down. With S6 I would think that Sony will want to keep the budget down as much as possible, the Spider-Man films have steadily been doing worse at the box office, and S6 might not even have Spider-Man himself to draw the crowds. So Sony will probably have low expectations with regard to this film's box office potential (if they are being realistic) and will want to keep keep things under control.

With the SS however DC are more likely to spend money on the film. This will be the first of their expanded universe films without Superman or Batman in it, so having this film be a success will be important to that larger film universe. As a result DC will likely see this film as an investment towards their universe, so they will be more willing to take a risk with their money knowing that even if the film is not a massive success itself it might help later films be more successful. We have already seen that they are willing to spend money on their cast so its probable that they will also be willing to spend big on the rest of the film.

So S6 has the problem of having a similar premise as a film that will come out several months earlier, but it will also have a lower budget and probably a cast of far less known actors. There have been plenty of examples in the past of similar films (or at least seen by the GA as being similar) and it usually ends up with one being heavily overshadowed by the other.

Well, you can always ask one of Sinister Six's storyboad artists - Robert Consing on Twitter :cwink:

I agree that I'd rather see the SS movie now instead of the S6, especially after enjoying Assault on Arkham. Just some kind of news or acknowledgement that the film is still happening would be great for us fans to hear but the fact that Sony are keeping this in the dark kinda shows that they're uncertain about how well it will do and if it's really the right move for them and the Spider-Man franchise. It just gives them the opportunity to easily pull the plug if they haven't made any big announcements as of yet other than the release date, leaving most people to happily sweep the film under the rug as if it was never announced in the first place.

The ideal thing for Sony to do is to just work on TASM3 for a 2017 release and disregard most of the events in TASM2 (excluding Gwen's death). I really want to see them try out something different and they had the opportunity to do that with TASM2 but blew it in the fact that they just made your average Spider-Man movie.

I don't think it should affect Sony at all. Despite both films being about villains on a team, SS is about bad guys forced to do good, while S6 is about bad guys being, well, bad.

Yeah but its not simply about if the stories are the same but if the GA sees them as the same. EDtv came out the same year as the Truman Show, they are very different films but both about reality TV and invasion of privacy, but the GA ended up mostly ignoring EDtv for the bigger budget, bigger casted Truman Show.

Suicide Squad has been rumored for a while. Honestly unless it's Spider-Man vs the Sinister Six, you shouldn't do a Sinister Six film. They are a group of criminals banded together to kill a hero. They are like the Legion of Doom or Flash's Rogues.

Suicide Squad is criminals that the government forces to do black op missions.

This still hurts Sinister Six and the fact Jared Leto is Joker is the biggest nail in the coffin. Joker back on the big screen after Heath's performance being played by an Oscar winning actor? People wanna see what he can do. There isn't a villain that would get the GA hyped like that for Sinister Six.

But if they disregard Gwen's death, that means she's alive? :mrk:

Disregard everything but Gwen's death from TASM2 :p If only she was still alive...
I'd personally like to see TASM3 act like most of TASM2 did not actually happen if a S6 film is just not plausible for Sony right now.

Oops, I read that wrong

Excuse my final exam syndrome.

The thing is, I think it's nearly impossible to act like most of the events in TASM2 never happened. The reason is because so many things did happen, and they involved major characters.

Harry wasn't done as well as they could have utilized Dane, and Cooper's Norman has been wasted until they prove us otherwise. TASM2 cemented that Oscorp has bad intentions and is being overrun by corruption - how can they undo that? Maybe they can go back to Peter's search for Ben's killer or try to find something from the end of TASM1 to continue from, but there's not much else besides Peter and Gwen's relationship (and now Gwen is gone). Additionally, not mentioning Ben in TASM2 was a buzzkill, so to drag that plot-line out of the closet now would feel forced and awkward.

I wish they had handled some of these elements of TASM2 so much better. Gwen's death is the perfect opportunity to introduce a new story, but some of the muck that was created in TASM2 will inevitably be dragged into TASM3.

They shot themselves in the foot and now they have to deal with it.

You are excused, exams are worse than drugs. ("don't do exams, kids.")

That is true that a lot happened in TASM2 that they have to now deal with but I'm hoping that TASM3 is exciting and gripping enough that people themselves disregard what happened in TASM2. Sure, they can ask what happened to Oscorp and Richard Parker's secret lab but I want them to be able to answer that question themselves and say something along the lines of "TASM3 gave us a really fresh and incredible Spider-Man story that really works on its own so I'm not surprised that they didn't have time to tie up loose ends from the previous films"...

Idk, the point I want to make is that if TASM3 is good enough and gives us something very new then what happened in TASM2 would be irrelevant to the events of TASM3, other than knowing that Peter lost his very first love and is still recovering. I think that trying to resolve all those storylines from the first two movies is just too much effort than it's worth and would probably lead to an even more convoluted film than TASM2 was so I think it's just best if the writers just sweep these previous subplots under the rug and steer clear of them for the next movie. As for Uncle Ben, I mentioned this before in another post, but I think it would be really touching and redeeming if TASM3 was to open with Peter standing at a grave and we assume it's Gwen's but the camera reveals it to be Uncle Ben's and Peter talks about how much he misses him and how he could really do with him being around. TASM3 could close with Peter learning that through everything he's been through (with Uncle Ben, Cap Stacy and Gwen's deaths) that with great power, comes great responsibility.

Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't read through the comics but in Amazing Fantasy 15, Uncle Ben never actually says that famous line, it's just written at the end of the comic, so maybe this is just something Peter learns himself? Either way, I know that Uncle Ben said something similar in TASM (which was actually from the Ultimate comics) but Peter can obviously learn from those words and twist it into "with great power...".

Instead of CGI,why not use animatronics for the lizard, you can have guys in green screen suits to move him in a fight, then in the editing room you would erase the green screen guys and speed up the footage.

It would be cheaper, and it would look a million times better.

If this movie wants to beat Suicide Squad, they need to get some big stars to take the roles of the members of the Sinister Six,pick villains that wow the audience, make them stand out from each other, and have a good story to why they are working together.

Make the villains look different, don't make them six white guys.We need one or two female members,a black guy,a little person, old guy,a latino or asian person.

1.A little person in the R.H.I.N.O. Suit, but make the suit 7ft tall, and more stream lined.

2.Kraven could be female, (sex sells).

3.Vulture is the old guy,but make him look really old (warts, liver spots, veins, yellow teeth, etc.

Well, I will say this...you're perfect for Sony.
