I will try, it would suck very hard. First was great, second wasnt the same by far, a third would be unnessesary. And Bill Murray doesnt want to do more sequels of ghostbusters, and a ghostbusters movie without bill murray couldnt be made.

I heard an idea "I guess it was a fan script or something" for a third movie a few years ago that went something like this:

GBs are old. Retired. They run an amusement/Chuck-E-Cheese/Planet Hollywood type place dedicated to their past adventures. Then Satan shows up and apparently he's decide to use New York as an extension of hell, because Hell is full and he needs womewhere to put the other damned souls.

GBs break the glass cases and bust out the proton packs. The get their butts kicked.
Satan goes off to do his plan, and the GBs have to hire new, younger GBs to do the actual ghost fighting.
I forget how it ended.

It could work *shrug*

That I believe was Dan Ackroid's idea but the budget was too big. I for one am glad it didn't get made, GBs has never been about huge spectales but deep characters going on comical adventures. Also to be honest, everyone knows how that would play out in the first 10 minutes, it'd be a boring movie :(

I assume they have to trick Satan in the end, because I doubt the containment unit could handle him.

Amen.

A while back I toyed with the idea of a remake with the Wilson/Vaughn/Ferrell/Stiller crowd, but I couldn't fit them correctly into the roles, and besides it would probably just suck.

Stiller - Ray
Vaugn - Peter
Ferrell - Egon
and then a black dude ;)

That's pretty much what I had. But I can't see Will Ferrell doing Egon justice

Please, not. Leave alone the ghostbusters. If a sequel willl suck, a remake will suck even more.

It's not a bad idea but there's a fundamental flaw unless I misread your idea. Becuz I take it Superman REturns way was casting all new young people, the reason it was possible to do with Superman Returns(though it failed miserably) was because Christopher Reeves wasn't all that memorable, he did a good job, but there's no way of getting another actor to portray Venkman same way it'll be nearly impossible for Kirk and Spock.
You´re right, and that was never my idea to recast the roles, that would be stupid.
To recast, it would be better to restart or remake it.

No, my idea would be a bit in the likes of Star Trek Generations, putting the old and new side by side, which means, two teams, the originals and a new team.
And i already know what would happen to the original team in the end, just don´t know why and how.
It would be a bit sad and dramatic, but, that the same time, hopeful and heroic...they would "sacrifice" themselves for a greater propose, to be a sort of Limbo, forever young, doing what that made them legendary.
This way they would became bigger than life, and it would a hell of a closure for the character, forever seen as heroes.

very true, here's my thinking;

Ferrell could be Rick Moranis' role
hmm I'm thinking:

Ray - Jack Black
Venkman - Vince
Egon - Stiller? (or should he be tall and gangly?)
Winston - Dave Chappelle or that dude from Kevin Hill.

I wouldn't mind seeing a realization of one of the earlier drafts of the movie like the space/futuristic one or the one where Winston was an Airforce general.

The ONLY actor who could fill the Egon-type role would be Mr. Rainn Wilson.

a remake in say, 2010 would be utterly huge and awesome!

I say that there should a continuation, building up a new franchise...or, at least, a last movie, which, in that case, Movies205´s idea is actually very good.

I would do a "Superman Returns" with Ghostbusters 3...
Just like Superman Returns did was to give an excuse to why we, audience, where without a Superman movie for so long....because he was away, he returned to Earth and the movies screens at the same time.
It was an extremely bad way to go with Superman, but it would really work with Ghostbusters.
But, my take would not be to explain why the Ghostbusters disappeared, that happend because there were nothing to do, but rather, why there was nothing to do, and years before, there was so many.
And why there was so many back then.

This way it gives a all new level to the Ghostbusters and not just someone "friends catching ghosts".

I think ghostbusters 2 is the superman returns type of thing you're describing. lol

No recastings.
No remake.
Maybe a sequel but not for a while.
Let the superhero and remade movies trend die down.
Get original cast back, and have them do their last hurrah to save all of New York.
Let it end with them hiring new people to become Ghostbusters.

My version of GB3 goes like this.

ecto one races through new york.

It stops at a haunted mansion.

Mysterious guys in jumpsuits step out of ecto and strap on proton packs.

They go in the mansion bust some ghosts and when the dust settles we see they're RGB look-alikes voiced by the original RGB cast... ha ha.

After that We see it's all just a movie set and Venkman (murray) is the director (or consultant... whatever).

As the story unfolds we learn that all the GBs have moved on from busting.

Dana's Son Oscar is much older now.

Janine has married Egon who's a professor at a uni ( :) )

Ray's still at his shop, he's working on a way to bring slimer back to life. (like that machine in the casper movie.) Maybe this could be one of the focuses of the plot.

Winston's a priest, one of the higher up ones since he's personally met so many from beyond the grave.

The threat this time is indeed Satan or something like that who has come to bring hell to new york. This demon is so powerful it brings gozer and Vigo back to life or whatever they'd be and staypuft would be back too. Slimer lives with Ray at the shop and he warns ray that there's talk of an attack on earth's dimension from the ghost dimension.

I haven't worked out how the story happens yet but it'll follow a similar pattern to the last two. GB (re)establish themselves, some **** happens, and who ya gonna call?

At the end of the movie, Peter sacrafices himself and dies to save the rest of the GBs lives. I think this is great because it shows even though he's the cynical one he's still has the biggest heart and we remember that all the gb were willing to die to save new york in the first movie. This time one does. (Mostly it's just payback for making us wait so damn long for a new gb) He comes back as a ghost in the end patrick swayze style to say goodbye. I want slimer to try and slime him but slimer gets slimed by Peter instead...

Ah.. darn you murray...

Oh and the soundtrack would feature songs by eamon.

Yeah it has to be with the original cast or it's better that it doesn't get made.

I still say we should have something along these lines:

The original Ghostbusters have been killed by some evil Satanist. With unfinished business to take care of, they all are stuck as ghosts that are confined to the firehouse as long as the wrongdoing is gone unpunished. So here we are with the entire team of original Ghostbusters as ghosts themselves, haunting the firehouse.

Along comes some new 20-something people to the firehouse to pay their respect to their fallen heroes that they admired so much. During their brief visit, they quickly discover the true fate of the Ghostbusters...they've were murdered and they now haunt the firehouse. Angered by the revelation that their deaths weren't simply accidents, and with the Ghostbusters seeing their opportunity to possibly pass on to the afterlife, the group of 20-somethings are offered the job of being the new Ghostbusters!

The movie follows the main plot of the Ghostbusters, new and old, putting their heads together to find and defeat the Satanist responsible for the GB's death, all the while, we see the original GB's train the newbies on everything they know.

We go through the whole movie not knowing who the Satanist is, so we're just in the dark as much as the characters are. All we know is that the guy is on a personal mission to bring Satan himself to the surfaceworld, and that eliminating the Ghostbusters was a major step at assuring such a thing could happen.

In a major twist towards the end, it's revealed that one of the new Ghostbusters has been the Satanist the whole time. He started off as a fan of the original Ghostbusters, and studied them so well until one day something about Satan had cought his eye. Soon after, he had become more obsessed about Satan as he ever was with the Ghostbusters. He began idolizing Satan, and soon came up with his plot to bring Satan to our world. So he came up with a plan that would kill off the Ghostbusters, thus allowing Satans coming. It was while he was visiting with his so-called friends to the firehouse, when he realized his job was not quite over just yet, as the Ghostbusters were still around, in ghost-form anyway. So he went along with the facade of being a "good guy", until the time was right to rid the surfaceworld of the Ghostbusters once and for all! Now, with the Satanist armed with the Ghostbusters' very own proton packs, the original Ghostbusters are about to find out just what it was like for every one of the ghosts that they had captured over the span of their careers. The Ghostbusters are about to become the hunted!

So the climax has the new GB's fighting to save their idols from the Satanist dude before they are locked away forever, and before Satan himself takes over the overworld!

...whatcha think?

^To imdaly
 For coming up with an original idea involving Satanists.
 For killing off the cast and having them as ghost haunting the fire department and everything after that.

I wouldn't mind a remake or a restart. I don't want new character taking on the Ghostbuster mantle though.

JUST FILM THE DAMN SCRIPT THAT AYKROYD WROTE!!!! ghostbusters 3:hellbent, with murray as a ghost....
