IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Instead of fixing the problem, simply shut it down and throw the baby out with the bathwater. They could revamp the software and enlist moderators to strictly enforce the rules, but that's not as easy as simply calling it quits and closing the door to everyone, including all of the movie lovers who are looking for good discussion.

The baby is the problem with IMDB. You don't save Damien. The vast majority of the posters are trolls.

This is disappointing. Obviously IMDB threads have a much higher than normal cesspool quota and we all like to make fun of it now and then, but nowhere else can you find pages of discussion on virtually any movie.

Oh well.

Honestly though, there was really no need for them. The site itself is still useful, but there are plenty of movie-related message boards out there that actually regulate member conduct and allow for a more user-friendly experience.

At the end of the day, you can't let people post damn-near whatever they want without consequence and expect a message board to be successful. So many of those IMDb boards were straight-up toxic.

Wow, makes you wonder which movie forum was the straw that broke the camel's back? lol

It's the only way to be sure.

Long time coming.

And it's only the message boards. Not the IMDB itself because they're useful.

Happy to hear it. Movie ratings should be next as they lose credibility by the day. A lot of people I converse with online think they lack credibilty, which is reasonable considering the message board trolls also have a hand in rating the films. The cesspool of trolls will still have a place there as long as ratings can be so easily monkeyed around with. Moderation has always been a joke at that site and will likely continue.

What it was initially intended to be, a database for films.

Good, one less place where Togdog1 a.k.a. Doetreve a.k.a. his 5 dozen sock puppets can poison with their MUC hyperbolic hosanna threads where he does nothing but agree with himself.

What is IMDb without a message board?

A nicer place.

In all seriousness......I use IMDB a dozen times a day (I'm constantly looking up movies and shows and reading up on them and the makers).....but I stopped reading on the message boards years ago. From what I saw....someone would ask a question, get one serious answer followed by dozens of crap responses. Over and over again.

That's insane. I can't believe they are shutting it down. That's how I found this place.

That's the one thing I'll miss. The ability to watch some random movie from the 30s on tv and then go on IMDB and read what people had to say about it. The trolls never bothered going to the boards for older films.

The boards for newer films were to be avoided like the plague.

This. I think it's bittersweet but it definitely had it coming, it's like YouTube comments section.

Gotta love youtube comments sections, where humorous comments on funny videos get hundreds of replies derailing into a hate-filled shout fest about politics.

TBH I only use IMDB to rate movies and shows as well as update my favorite movies list.
