IMDb to close "message boards" on February 20, 2017

Long time coming.

And it's only the message boards. Not the IMDB itself because they're useful.

On the contrary however, the fundamental beauty of IMDB's message boards is the ability of readers to narrow down their focus on a vast range of topics. To put things into proper perspective, where else can one go for a contemporary POV on an obscure, 50 year old movie?

While there are good blogs, like AV Club, which try to cover the same breadth of subject matter in a thoughtful manner, discussion is focused on whatever the paid staff wants to discuss.

I do admit I've been going to the IMDB boards for years, and will miss that cray cray.

This is disappointing. Obviously IMDB threads have a much higher than normal cesspool quota and we all like to make fun of it now and then, but nowhere else can you find pages of discussion on virtually any movie.

Oh well.

Yup this makes me sad :csad:. I just realized I have been posting on IMDb since I was about 14. I'm 26....

I've never actually posted there myself, but checking it out after I've just seen a movie is a habit (I'm aware I can still do that, but the forums were a big part of it).

People will adjust, just like when the official DC forums were shut down, for much the same reasons.

In this age of Instagram and what not I'm glad the message board is still a bastion of online community, like SHH and Reddit.

Happy to hear it. Movie ratings should be next as they lose credibility by the day. A lot of people I converse with online think they lack credibilty, which is reasonable considering the message board trolls also have a hand in rating the films. The cesspool of trolls will still have a place there as long as ratings can be so easily monkeyed around with. Moderation has always been a joke at that site and will likely continue.

They should at least get rid of that "Top 250" list.

Wow, makes you wonder which movie forum was the straw that broke the camel's back? lol

On the more niche pages you could have some good discussions and people would spend the time to make recommendations for similar films, and the like. I'll miss that. But discussion pages for popular films are/were a waste of time.

Long time coming.

And it's only the message boards. Not the IMDB itself because they're useful.

By the same logic, the entire internet should be shut down because trolls. It's ridiculous and completely disregards all the good such a service does. IMDb was an amazing place for film lovers to find each other and discuss literally everything, even the most obscure of topics, related to movies you could often not discuss anywhere else.

I frequented the TDK board back in the day. Like all IMDb boards, it was a mixed bag that was mostly just bad. On the one hand, it's inevitable and and probably a good thing to cut out all the bad in one big move. But there is some good there too. It's a shame the trolls had to ruin it for everyone.

I'm gonna miss it. Been posting their for ten years. I pretty much only use the site for the message boards and when I have those, "What else has this guy been in? He looks so familiar," moments. I certainly don't use the site for its ratings or reviews.

They're dumb to do this.

I always look at the message boards while on a film page for that site. I tend to think it won't last.

You will also find the most humorous posts in forum history on that site.

So the real reasons why there closing the messageboarss on IMDB

People call celebs and movies out on there BS for bad mistakes. IMDB Fears its bad for upcoming films and studios are pist blaming there Boss...the Audiance who pays and doesnt pay to see there movies. The Industry wants to silence the customer and there word of mouth on the internet.

IMDB was caught selling Downvotes on Movies and Documentaries to discredit the films before and after release. Soaked In Bleach was the Documentary that a Hacker released the information against IMDB for selling downvotes to discredit the Documentary before it was released and it spread on IMDB's messageboards and internet. People were angry and spoke out about it and the posts were deleted.

Its censorship and control.

No part of me can honestly consider this a bad thing considering the amount of trolling that goes on there...

Best decision they ever made. Their forums are a haven for trolls and spammers. No proper moderation there.

I am going to miss the IMDB boards. However, they were beyond toxic. I was specifically following several films there (Rogue One comes to mind) and the boards were filled with political crap and Trump threads. And all I wanted was to discuss the particular film. My ignore list there was as long as the airplane runway is FF6.

People's stupidity is what always ruins everything.

The IMDB boards are cesspool of human filth and BS rumors and fake scoops. Good riddance.

I've enjoyed using those boards, and as was said, it's fascinating to see discussions on even obscure films. But I agree that the boards lately have been pretty useless as you have to wade through a thick morass of troll posts ranging from stupid to perverted to find the few valid topics. Not to mention the legions of posters whose only intention there was to pick fights with people. It probably got too burdensome to try and moderate them so I guess they just decided to give it up.

I agree with you in a way but tell that to the trolls who made that place home for the last decade. It's their fault you're losing out on some obscure but fascinating discussion of a 50's movie.

This is great news! I asked a simple question there about a month ago, and got pummeled with nonsense and stupidity. It won't be missed.

I've been posting on IMDb's forums since the early 2000's. While they're kind of a cesspool nowadays (at least on the more popular films) I think closing them is a mistake. They definitely serve their purpose. Whenever I have a question about a film I just watched, I always look at the message boards because someone has likely already asked it. It's very useful.

Plus, if they get rid of them, I see them losing a lot of visitors, then who's going to update all the trivia? That's all user submitted.

I think it's easy to say "good riddance" if you don't use the site anyway. I personally have never used the message boards on there, but a friend of mine has been on there for years. I can imagine a lot of people are bummed out because they probably made a lot of friends over the years.

Never entered their boards, so, i have no idea how bad it is.

I only used IMDB for information
