Latino Review got a chance to ask 2012 director Roland Emmerich if there's still a chance we'll see a sequel to 1996's Independence Day at some point. After all, the blockbuster made a massive $817.4 million at the worldwide box office that year. Emmerich gave an interesting response...

Dean Devlin and I are still set to make a sequel likely because we've found some sort of idea and we approached FOX and FOX has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean's and my deal, and Will's (Smith) deal. Will wants to do it in some sort of a package they can live with. So it's just been in negations now since forever, and naturally FOX says "Why don't you do it without Will Smith?" I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too. And, so, it's in limbo and lately the studios are fighting. Like gross players, and Will is a gross player and is probably the only gross player right now who's worth his gross. So we'll see what happens. I would love to do it..

Yeah, still looks good! I'm gonna see this with the same crew I saw the original with.

I liked the first one but that trailer did nothing for me.

I don't think Bill Pullman is going to survive this time. Has the recluse with PTSD vibe going on.

Does no-one else think this looks kinda generic compared to the original?

I knew he wasn't going to be in it for a while, but it's so weird seeing, what feels like, everyone back except Smith

I anyone else lol at the part of the trailer where Jasmine (Vivica A. Fox) was waving at the chopper on the roof as it took off?

It kinda looked like they were purposely leaving her behind...

Didn't really look generic to me other than the way that the trailer was cut/edited.

I can see how to alien ship designs look generic. Especially considering the number of movies (Battle LA, Transformers, Battleship, Avengers) have taken designs or beats from the original. At least imo.

I really hope this isn't gonna be a thing where people keep harping on the fact that Will Smith isn't/should be in this. Even with my friends, the first thing they said after watching the trailer was, "Where's Will Smith?"

Fact is they reached out to him and even went as far as writing two different versions of the script and he STILL said no.

Time to move on and take it as it is.

Looks cool, but still upset at them recasting Mae Whitman for no good reason.

No Will Smith? But... who will punch the aliens in the head this time? :csad:

I wasn't expecting this to hit today, was this announced previously?

I mean you have to realize Will Smith is one of the biggest movie stars in the last 20 years and this along with Men in Black are arguably his biggest movie roles so of couse a lot of people are gonna wonder why he's not back.

Also not everyone follows the production of a movie, so they don't know that Smith wasn't coming back.

I understand that. But when you've got people slamming the idea of the sequel simply on the grounds that he's not in it, which is what I've been reading and seeing well... it gets quite annoying.

Looks great! Got a lot nostalgia going for it at least. Wonder how they will explain what happened the Smiths character.

It totally does. This doesn't look any different from any generic sci-fi action movie released in the past 10 years. I'll still probably see it because I dig the first one a lot, provided it doesn't get a single digit score on Rotten Tomatoes.

I love Chef Goldblum as much as the next man, but this has Lost World stank about it.

Lol poor Will Smith

Nope. Reminds me of Robotech, and I'm pretty sure they used that as a reference in some capacity for this. I'm totally on board.
