Independence Day 2? - Part 1

9/10. I thought this was epic, and honestly, this is what summer movies are all about. It knows exactly what it is, and doesn't try to be anything more... just like the first one. You should've known what you were getting when you bought your ticket, and if you didn't, shame on you.

The first one was a pandering, cheesy "B" movie that happened to have fantastic effects and a fresh take on alien invasion movies that elevated it to "A" status. Not sure why anyone was expecting something more this time around. Goldblum, Pullman, Hirsch, and Spiner were all solid as ever, and the possibility for a third movie (and an expansion of the franchise) makes me salivate.

A lot of people need to take a deep breath and remember why they go to the movies. Especially ones like this. It's big, dumb, fun, mindless entertainment. Stop being pretentious and complaining about cinematography and casting and script issues and plot holes. Watch the big, fun movie and enjoy it. Stop over-analyzing the dumb alien invasion movie and have some fun in your life.
Yeah we should all just have dirt low standards!

It's simple to me. I don't think that the film looks remotely entertaining and the two young male leads look positively dire in the trailers that I have watched. I remember when people said that the A-Team was "fun" and that was one of the worse theatrical experiences of my life.

No, the film like the original - was fun. Just to re-post this to show your thoughts on not just this film, but Independence Day as a whole and that you were going to hate this film since day one:

I thought the original was a bad movie even when I was 10-11 in 1996.

So, you saying you have no interest in seeing this movie and ridiculing it isn't a surprise at all given the above.

It's not dirt low standards if people expect different things. That's a little insulting.
I expect an Independence Day movie to be dumb fun and I don't see dumb fun when I watch trailers and footage of the new film. I see a crushing bore of a film that neglected to cast charismatic leads for some reason.

I had plenty of fun with Emmerich's goofy White House Down 3 years ago. But IDR looks like Emmerich in Godzilla and 2012 mode and I loathed those boring horrible films.

I would take Godzilla and 2012 over White House Down anyday probably because a superior Olympus Has Fallen ruined it for me.

I couldn't for the life of me figure out why Roland Emmerich's version of White House story being less epic than the version directed by someone (Antoine Fuqua) I have never heard of. But IDR feels right in that department.

Olympus has Fallen may indeed be the superior film, but the tone of White House Down was a better fit for me.

I couldn't get through 40 minutes of Olympus Has Fallen. I wouldn't spend my life claiming that it's a good film but I had fun with White House Down.

Yeah this uh, this was bad.
4/10
Goldblum and Pullman are good but man they're underused and they're trying so hard to make us care for this new cast of characters but they're so....meh, except Hemsworth's friend, he was fine, but the rest are bland and pointless, CG is pretty bad too, probably some of the worst CG i've seen this year. Maika Monroe tried her best but she was given nothing to work with, and its such a slap in the face to not have Mae Whitman in this role. Im not gonna act like the first one is a perfect action movie but its fun and enjoyable as hell, and this movie doesnt have the charm or the memorable one liners of the first one.
EDIT: Btw, that was the ****tiest sequel bait i have ever seen.

I turned my brain off at the door and I still couldn't enjoy it.

It was actually pretty dull, despite the preposterous action pieces.

I think i knew things weren't going well once the big mass destruction scene started and I didn't feel any of the wow i felt from the wall of fire from the first film. Emmerich has done mass destruction so much now that it felt like he didn't have anything left. The energy and sense of fun wasn't here. My brain was turned off too and still i had problems.

We all know it is supposed to be brainless fun. Treat it as such. Still excited to see it.

Nope. I still think the original is a classic. IMHO it's the template of what a "good" summer popcorn action adventure is. This was not.

Indeedy. I rewatched it earlier this week in anticipation of IDR, and it holds up incredibly well.

I think he almost went too far with the cliches in some parts.
Basically everybody's parental guardian is dead except for Levinson, lol.
