Independence Day 2? - Part 1

As someone who absolutely adored the original (one of the best theatrical experiences I've ever had), I thought this film was completely pointless. It was so dull and boring.

The thing that bums me out with what I'm hearing about IDR is that it's dull and boring. My friend told me that and I'm seeing that reflected in a lot of the reactions here.

Let me just say that I was totally willing and happy to go into a fun, mindless popcorn film and turn my brain off and enjoy it for what it was. I have to agree with titansupes that after watching the original on HBO recently, it holds up far better than I thought- which made me more pumped for this movie.

However, "dull and boring" do not go hand in hand with "fun" to me. So, I'm not sure I'll see this now. It has nothing to do with being pretentious or having expectations too high- I want a fun, dumb movie. I don't want a boring movie.

9/10. I thought this was epic, and honestly, this is what summer movies are all about. It knows exactly what it is, and doesn't try to be anything more... just like the first one. You should've known what you were getting when you bought your ticket, and if you didn't, shame on you.

The first one was a pandering, cheesy "B" movie that happened to have fantastic effects and a fresh take on alien invasion movies that elevated it to "A" status. Not sure why anyone was expecting something more this time around. Goldblum, Pullman, Hirsch, and Spiner were all solid as ever, and the possibility for a third movie (and an expansion of the franchise) makes me salivate.

A lot of people need to take a deep breath and remember why they go to the movies. Especially ones like this. It's big, dumb, fun, mindless entertainment. Stop being pretentious and complaining about cinematography and casting and script issues and plot holes. Watch the big, fun movie and enjoy it. Stop over-analyzing the dumb alien invasion movie and have some fun in your life.

I can't force myself to have fun with a movie that isn't fun. Don't tell me how to enjoy mindless action movies, I love the finale of Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

You can't just make a crappy movie and say "it's supposed to be crappy!"

It doesn't work that way.

So much green screen. Sheesh. I for some strange reasons had some kind of high hope for this film but turns out I found it pretty mediocre.

Oddly enough I feel like there wasn't enough city/world destruction scenes. I never felt any real threat from the aliens.

I think he almost went too far with the cliches in some parts.
Basically everybody's parental guardian is dead except for Levinson, lol.

Does Vivica A. Fox die too? She looked like she was a goner in the trailer.

I actually though it was decent. Obviously it was never going to better than the first, I actually enjoyed the spectacle of it. Also I didn't even think about
there being other aliens out in space, so that was pleasantly surprising.

I'm very torn on watching this. I love big dumb, fun action films that know what they are. But, dare I say it, the reason the original ID4 worked so well was because of the characters. You fell in love with the characters, even though some of them were over the top caricatures, they still had a charm to them and your rooted for them to win in the end.

I'm not sure I'm going to care that much for Liam Hemsworth and Will Smith's son and that could be a significant problem.

Do they also explain what happened to Goldblum's wife from the first one? I always liked that character.

I don't remember, honestly. All the dialogue just kind of blends together.

I just learned through Chris Stuckmann that the guy who played the forced comic relief character was also one of the writers on the movie. That explains a lot.

Pretty surprised EW actually gave this an "F" review.

Hah I totally just watched this same review. I pretty much agree with everything Stuckmann had to say.

Most of the time his impressions suck but he totally nailed the "DAVID!" guy from the first movie.

The film only managed a 16.8 million Friday, including it's 4 million previews by the way. Hugely disappointing numbers. Ticket prices are much, much, much higher today and movies are more frontloaded. The film is screwed. It's the opposite of Jurassic World.

So I should just go and see The Shallows instead I guess?

Not surprising. Emmerich loves to do that in his films.

It was better on a second viewing.

Again, the 3rd act is easily the strongest part of the film. From a visual standpoint it's all you'd want and expect out of a summer blockbuster.

It's just a shame the first two thirds of the movie are kind of meh.

Nope. Charlotte Gainsbourg is his new love interest. No mention at all of his wife.

That's one of my big pet peeves honestly. I HATE it when movies/TV shows do that.

Seems like the original female actors were seen as disposable. They even recast Mae Whitman's role because they didn't think that she was "hot" enough. **** this movie. I'm glad it's putting up disappointing numbers.

Does it really matter? Mae Whitman is better off having not worked on this.

Does annoy me that the only older female character in the movie is Sela Ward who has no connection to the first film. And Vivica Fox and well...look what they did to her.

I don't disagree, at the end of the day Whitman did dodge a bullet. Blatant sexism still annoys me though.
