Independence Day 2? - Part 1

It's been ages since I've watched ID4. I know that new 30th anniversary edition just came out? And it has an extended edition as well. Anyone know what else was added to the extended cut?

I hate this defense 99% of the time...

But if someone is worried about the critics score for this, they're not in the right mind set for this.

This is a turn your brain all the way off, have some fun, popcorn, candy, double diabetes size of soda type of movie.
If only the movie actually turned out to be a portion of your last statement.

I look at Independence Day the same way I look at Jurassic Park, fun and watchable style/visual effects over substance 90's movie. Jurassic Park is a much, much better version and more memorable experience because Spielberg is talented while Roland Emmerich is not.

I know my view of Jurassic Park is controversial, no need to point that out. I do like Jurassic Park and I watched it a couple of weeks ago on Netflix. I like it I just never had the hard on for as a film the way other people did.

But I digress; my point is, of course reviews don't matter to me when it comes to films like Independence Day. My issue with Resurgence is that the trailers don't make it look very entertaining and the lack of charismatic actors like Will Smith in the lead makes the film look even less fun.

Isn't it the same extended version that was on DVD just put on blu ray?

Still looking for an answer to my earlier question. What's your thoughts on the original Independence Day, rank it out of 10.

Broseph my good man, you just added 10 years onto Independence Day's actual age.

Its the extended cut that has been out on dvd for years.

The 2008 bluray release only had the theatrical cut. The new bluray has new restorations of both cuts.

Footage from this new film is being used in literal recruitment ads for the U.S. army. It's kind of laughable.

Yes and no. I mean, who growing up watching this film wasn't enthralled with dog fights and militaristically inspired to a degree by the president's speech to fight for mankind? Part of what I'm excited about with this film is seeing characters my age who "experienced" the war of '96 at the same time I did going to war against the aliens, showing we can fight too in a sense; taking up the mantle. I think they're targeting guys my age (28) and a couple years younger with those ads. I could see it working for some people, cheap tactic.

Well I'm sorry but I have never seen the extended cut. Which is why I asked in the first place what is in that cut of the film.

I was never a huge fan of independence day, still i can appreciate it's popcorn values, probably a 6.5/10. Though I would say i enjoyed Emmerich's Stargate more.

No offense, but exactly as I thought. You thought the first was just mediocre so of course you would hate this one. I'm sure all of us know it's not going to be as good as the first. If you loved the first, this won't measure up (the first was magic in a bottle, pop culture landmark) but it will be a fun ride. If you thought it was mediocre, you're obviously gonna have the same reaction to it that you did - going from mediocre to hating it. That's the reason I asked. Someone who thought the first was mediocre is bound to have a different opinion on the second from those who loved the first one instead.

I wouldn't say it's mediocre, I'm not sure how you measure ratings, but i like it fine, but it's not a film that ever stuck with me as some other films around that time, jurassic park for instance. I can still enjoy it on its spectacle, and camp. It's a fine movie for what it is.

A lot of alien based media has happened since 1996 like Starship Troopers and what not. They obviously had to up the game and rebuild the whole thing to make this work in today's age. They basically went with Troopers via the whole viral "join the cause" thing, the mama alien is obviously for the kaiju crowd, they got attractive youngsters in the lead roles to capture that demographic, etc.

Too bad Liam Hemsworth has the charisma of a filet of salmon.

"I like it fine" isn't really heaps of praise either, on a non-numerical scale. While it didn't stick out to you, it did stick out to others (me for instance). I loved the first one and consider it to be the best alien invasion film, going to see it is one of my most favorite experiences from growing up as an X-Files kid. If you mention 'Day the Earth Stood Still ' (original) I consider it more as an alien "drama" for lack of a better term since it's not really an action adventure film. So as said, since you thought the first was just "fine" you're obviously going to have a different reaction from "someone who absolutely loved the first" like me and others who view it the same. I'm not saying you're wrong for having your opinion, just that it'll undoubtedly differ from those who loved the first.

I don't think I've seen anyone in here, especially the last page or 2, say that he'd actually be good in this so

:funny: It's so true.

Liam Hemsworth casting as the lead in an Independence Day movie is so odd. Movies like this thrive on big charismatic performances so why hire Hemsworth?

does anyone else love that one level in Star Fox 64 that is essentially like the final battle in ID4?

He's more like canned tuna. The Great Value canned tuna from walmart.
