Independence Day 2? - Part 1

:funny: It's so true.

Liam Hemsworth casting as the lead in an Independence Day movie is so odd. Movies like this thrive on big charismatic performances so why hire Hemsworth?
Who knows? maybe they were hoping people would confuse him with his brother.

I hope the ending with the giant invader is well done. Looks kinda cheesy with the legs in the spots but giant aliens fighting military tech can always be cool

I can see that scene going either way, assuming it is the queen of the race or something similar as a huge one of that race has never been hinted at yet.

If it's a giant biosuit, I'm wondering if the controller inside is also huge or just like the other aliens in a bigger vessel

As said earlier, I'm 99% certain it's the Supreme Commander. Immediate first thoughts upon seeing the tentacles - a lot more confident about stating that after seeing it front up. Here's more information on the character:

Although there is a toy, this is one character that was never seen outside of the mothership - at a distance, and primarily basically only on the driver inside of it/one of them - and that commander was the '96 version, technology's come a long way since then.

Basically, I think it's a concept they had for the first film - couldn't take all the way and are thus, bringing it back for this film.

Damn. They're not even going to screen this to the critics, at all. LOL. That's not good. :funny:

Oh this is gonna be good. :lmao:

They know full well what they made. Snobs critiquing disaster porn is counterintuitive.

Outside of critics saying the original Independence Day was average (61-67% on rotten tomatoes), most of Emmerich's movies have received poor marks from the critics and I've enjoyed every single one but 10,000 BC. Hell, my next favorite Emmerich movie after Independence Day and favorite nature disaster movie 'The Day After Tomorrow' only got 41-45%. So it isn't a movie I'm going to listen to critics about at all, since - as said - concerning Emmerich I've always disagreed with them. I even enjoyed 2012, it's a step down - but I still find it to be a very enjoyable and fun film.

I still think making this without Will Smith was a boneheaded move.
I agree. Sure Will Smith isn't the draw that he used to be but he was a huge part of why Independence Day was as enjoyable as it was to a lot of people. Outside of the White House exploding I'd say the punch the Alien "Welcome to Earth" (he never said Earf by the way) scene was the most memorable scene in the entire film.

It's gonna be awfully hard to capture that cheesy goodness that ID4 had.
seeing the landmarks destroyed for the first time,
The presidents speech,
the successful counter attack and the chills it brought,
cousin eddie flying into the destroyer.

The difference and problem between this and the original film is that ID4 was pretty unique in its time. Aliens destroying national landmarks? Heavy ****. Now this movie doesn't really stand out in the barrage of global disaster blockbuster films of today. It's worse when Emmerich himself is one of the people to contribute to it the most.

I think it's definitely going to under perform big time.

I think not screening it for most critics until after it's released is embarrassing. No ID4 was never a critical darling and the reviews would have been bad but it makes a film look ultra awful when the studio are afraid to screen it.

I think it'll have a big drop off. The Opening weekend might be fueled by curiosity.

They should've give in and give him the money he demanded because I'm missing his presence. I'm not even a huge fan of his but without Smith, what's the point. I'm just happy for Goldblum to be in a big film again, along with Thor 3.

Anything else opening against it?

Well Sony's 'The Shallows' moved up from planned June 29th date to June 24th likely knowing ID will underperform. Knowing they can compete against it. So clearly not good sign for ID. And also Amazon Studios’s The Neon Demon is having it's US release on same date.

I have issues with Roland Emmerich due to that 'Stonewall' film. Supposedly it was a passion project for him, but it sucked and was radically inaccurate. If the event meant so much to him as a gay man, why did he flub it and gave in to the Hollywood standard of having a generic white lead? In reality, the majority of the people involved were gay and trans minorites right? There were minority score but they're just background and supporting characters. It's a weird compromise to make when it could've been an important movie to the LGBT community. Or an educational film to straight people like myself who didn't anything about it. That and the movie was toothless and lame.

So if he was sell out on a passion project, why would be an ID4 sequel be any good? Even on a popcorn level?

Place your bets, ladies and gentleman, for the Rotten Tomatoes score!

I'm gonna go bold and say 25%. The trailers are all pretty promising but the movie will fall flat on its face and underperform. Cue tons of articles written on how it would have made a billion dollars if Will Smith was in it.
