Independence Day 2? - Part 1

More excuses that don't pan out guys.

I don't even know why I'm still arguing about this old story anyway. The film isn't even going to be successful. Bad reviews, lackluster performance in North America and it's being beat out by Now You See Me 2 in China.

I don't think anyone was giving excuses that didn't "pan out". I think I gave pretty clear and reasonable reasons to why Whitman wasn't cast.

But ok...

Roland Emmerich says Marvel and DC have been ripping him off

This Mae Whitman thing is total baloney. Stop drinking the SJW kool-aid. She was 8 years old in 1996. They didn't not hire her for not being hot back then either. They hired a child actress to play a child. This is 20 years later. Nobody 28 years old looks the same as they did when they were 8. They could've hired ANY actress and the character would still be believable, and they did. They didn't bring Whitman back because they hired her to play an 8 year old girl, not a 28 year old girl. She did her job.

I mean... why didn't they hire a black actress to play her in 2016? Or a tranvestite? Why did it have to be a blonde white girl all over again? Is America not able to suspend its disbelief anymore? :whatever:

The only people who said she wasn't hot enough for the role are the people crying about it.
"You didn't hire her because she's not hot!" ... YOU just said she's not hot.

Jesus H Crackers.

It's really simple. She's still an active actress, regular appears in films/TV shows (as well as doing a fair amount of VA work as well), she has said that she'd have liked to come back, etc. It's not like Big Willy's son, where the actor who played him doesn't act anymore, or Goldblum's wife, where they just wrote the character out. Whitmore's daughter is in this movie, has decent screentime, and they just didn't bother to even ask Mae if she wanted to come back. And some people don't like that (especially knowing how Hollywood tends to be on the "physical attractiveness" front." Also Roland's own track record in this regard, while not Michael Bay-levels of awful, is nonetheless hardly spectacular, so people don't really give him the benefit of the doubt.

Nothing "SJW" about it. Oh and screaming that every single time someone DARES not to agree 100% with casting or writing decisions in a film, doesn't help your argument. It just makes it look like you don't have any other real argument, so we resort to that tired strawman.

I saw the movie yesterday and it was weird how we just got dropped into the Joey King subplot after the attack, after she's lost loved ones and driving around the devastated areas and her crew meets up with Judd Hirsch. Were there scenes establishing her home life before the attack left on the cutting room floor?

I thought the movie was as about as good as an Independence Day sequel without Will Smith was ever going to be. Liam Hemsworth and Jai Courtney need to start a "good looking Australian actors with no personality" support group. Liam's character seemed to be the cocky charming reckless young Tom Cruise in Top Gun type character but he just can't pull it off.

Ultimately her whole subplot was just to get Julius to David.

Which even then, was still pretty pointless.

Chicago Redeye says it would've made more sense for Hiller and Whitmore's kids to be an item since they were so close in the previous flick, but it's wasted on Hemsworth, lol.
Hollywood is still a little scared of interracial romances in blockbuster movies. TV is way more comfortable with it than films
I think it'd be a cool concept if these new characters were more interesting, haha.

Seriously, I don't get what people see in Liam Hemsworth.
Liam Hemsworth is incredibly bland. Has He even had a successful movie he was the lead in outside of the Hunger Games?

Everyone ignores the eldest brother Luke Hemsworth because he he mostly appears in films in his native Australia but he is probably the most entertaining actor of the three brothers.

I've seen Luke Hemsworth in The Anomaly, Infini and Kill Me Three Times. None of those movies were that good but Luke was at least decent in all of them. If Luke Hemsworth had his brothers looks then he would probably be the most successful of the three of them.
I think Smith deserves props for turning this down. He's made a lot of bad decisions lately, but this was not one of them.
Smith bailed on this because he made After Earth which bombed and he didn't want to do another big budget Science fiction movie.

Fox was foolish to greenlight this sequel without Will Smith's involvement. Granted, I think the original ID4 was lightning in a bottle and they wouldn't have been able to replicate the original under any circumstances but attempting a sequel without the star of the original was idiotic.

Like if they made The Force Awakens without Harrison Ford. [BLACKOUT]How effective would that film had been if it started with Han Solo already dead. (In a test flight no less).[/BLACKOUT]

Now, it looks like this will make less than the original did on it's opening weekend, twenty years ago...

Back in 1996, ID4 was the movie event of the year. The hype was ENORMOUS. It was the movie, EVERYONE was talking about that summer. With this, it's the exact opposite. Nobody cares.

An 'event' movie opens nearly every weekend now between spring April and August. Back in the mid nineties it was less common.

Hollywood has cannibalized it's self with too many summer blockbusters.

For people to turn up to see a movie you really need to make them give a damn now. People aren't just going to see any old movie and hope that it is good.

If a movie sucks or is even just middle of the road then people are tweeting about it as soon as they leave theaters.

This film was way too cheesy. They were definitely trying too hard to recreate the magic of the first film. Most of the jokes didn't land, and were pretty painful to sit through. Ended exactly as I predicted too. Also not a lot of destruction for an Emmerich film. Pretty meh over all, sadly.

Is this gonna be an even bigger bomb than Warcraft? Dear lord.

It will do better domestically. Most likely a lot better. It doesn't have China to offset things, obviously. We kind of have to see how the rest of the world responds.

Some people keep going on about how Will Smith isn't a draw anymore but they are ignoring that he would be a draw in this particular film because it's one of his most iconic movies. Some are too stuck on Will Smith 2016 to acknowledge that. I agree that his involvement wouldn't have turned the film into a record breaker but I would be surprised if it didn't open with more than the 38-42mil that it's going to.

When it comes to box office this summer is a beast...

Other than Civil War and Dory have any of the major movies not underperformed? I guess The Conjuring 2 and Angry Birds...

Yeah, it's like Vin Diesel and the Fast & Furious. Vin on his own, can't open a film but when he's playing Dom Toretto in a Fast film, people show up in droves. Universal also once foolishly believed that the cars (not the actors/characters) were the stars and the franchise almost sank to direct to DVD levels, with that mindset. It wasn't until they wised up and brought EVERYONE back, that the series reached blockbuster status.

I find her quite attractive, but I also know what Hollywood execs consider "attractive". And if an actress doesn't fit that description once she is in her 20s, such roles disappear.

This post should be saved and placed in a special thread for the most ridiculous post, because couldn't be more straw men in here if you tried.

Have any of them been good? The Jungle Book was an April release, but was still making legit money in May because of how crappy the releases have been. People are going to see the tentpoles worth seeing. The problem is, only Disney is releasing them right now.

Zootopia, Jungle Book, Civil War and Dory.

Bob Iger is ****ting in a solid gold toilet.

It's such a silly post.

With Strange, Moana and Rogue One to come. Does anyone even remember Alice bombing? And next year they have Beauty and the Beast, GotG 2 and VIII. :funny:

Though it is kind of funny that they will probably have to offset two Depp films two years in a roll.
