I think people are way too angry at this. And this is from someone who think the movie is barely passable.

I have no understanding of the people saying that has no redeeming qualities or is absolute trash. I'm not sure what they're looking for.

Among other things, the world building here is exceptional, literally it's done something never done before. It's done something that Transformers has not done, that Marvel has no done, that WB/DC has not done, and that Star Trek has not done: it has explored the sociological and technological consequences of alien contact via invasion.

We see that humanity has changed in multiple ways due to an alien invasion. That's called "consequences", and it's something we've never seen in an alien invasion blockbuster sequel before.

The world of Independence Day Resurgence is fundamentally different from the world of the first movie. We see different social relations, different technologies which are in progress, different priorities and different values. It's not just about monuments built like in BvS, or phoney reactions like in Star Trek into Darkness, it's about making it all coherent. Within IDR we see that they indeed have new technology ... but it's a work in progress. They have alien guns, but they fire slowly. There's a psychological aftershock from telepathic contact with the aliens. There are new tribes and new compounds built. The world has come together politically. They have a moon base, but it doesn't work very well. Some of the planes crash and people die.

The Independence Day fanbase hasn't even been kept alive since the first one with any sort of cartoon series, video games, toys, etc. I never even see anyone wearing an Independence Day shirt or anything like that.

I remember the weak ass video game for PS1. It was cell phone quality. A video game with today's consoles would be sick.

I never liked the first movie, then this one did nothing to me. It was not good but eh, I have no effort to even hate or criticize it. Its just blah.

To all the people saying, "I don't understand why so many of you hate this movie; what did you expect", it's quite simple. The script was sh**. The dialogue went back and forth between corny one-liners and thinly veiled explanations of everything going on so the audience doesn't need to think for themselves. The characters, new and old, were uninteresting, with some barely having any personality at all. The action sequences were derivative; the big scene where the ship comes to earth is more reminiscent of that scene in the last Transformers movie where the robot bounty hunter's ship begins picking cars and buildings off the ground and dropping them. For f*** sake, Emmerich, if you're going to rip off a movie, at least rip off a good one. And yeah, there's some world building, but you have to actually make me give a crap about the world you're trying to build or else I'm not coming back for sequels or spinoffs.

Well I don't think it's that deep for me. I get why people wouldn't dislike it.

But I see people claiming this makes the first movie worse, how the movie made them angry and giving it a 0/10 and I just think it's a bit extreme.
As I said this wasn't the worst film, so far, of the year to me, hell it wasn't even the worst movie this summer.
The closest movie I would give a 0/10 to would probably be The Last Airbender and this wasn't nearly as bad to me.

But diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. I thought it was passable. I'm not going to watch this again or pick it up. But it's not a movie that's going to bother me in the future

This movie didn't make me upset in the same way that something like BvS did, because I have basically no attachment to these characters, or even really expectations for the movie. So I thought it was bad, but I wasn't that disappointed.

I wouldn't say it ruins the first one. If anything, it made me want to watch the first one again so I can hopefully wash the taste of this movie out of my mouth.

All of this means nothing if the movie isn't entertaining. Waste of a cool concept.

This original's charm came from the characters and their relationships with each other and the fact that the world felt authentic. This was an extremely hallow script that felt like it was built around Jeff Goldblum's involvement. Not David. In fact, David hardly felt like the same character this time around and seemed to have no real connection to Judd Hirsch's character. Most of the original players got pushed to the sidelines only to be jarringly removed from the film as soon as they could with little to no emotional stakes.

Additionally, this movie felt extremely claustrophobic as everything was either shot on a sound stage or a green screen. I know the retort is going to be, "Well how else do you shoot a movie?" and the answer is either on-location or with a damn good VFX team. The original, ironically given the subject, puts 20 years of CGI advancements to shame.

Worst of all, there was no momentum to this movie whatsoever. The original cleverly plotted the movie to take place over the course of three days, which in of itself is a meta-take on the three act structure of classic screenwriting. This movie again lacks that definition. They announce very early on that it's July 4th, but really, this could've taken place on Memorial Day and it wouldn't have made a difference. (Actually, it could've added some significance.) They so haphazardly jump between the moon and all four corners of the earth that time means nothing. Oh, and I guess we'll have a ticking clock, because we finally have to race to the end of the movie? It's lazy.

Cool tech and world-building only works if we give a **** about who's in this world.

they were on location. why didnt they film all scenes there? its very hard inside on set to simulate the sun and sky. i think it looks very fake.

The blue screen work was odd. There are shots were it looked great.. and there are times when the blue screen composites were so noticeable.

Judging from those, it's logistically easier to shoot the shots revolving around the bus chase on location. From a comfort standpoint, it makes sense to do it on a sound stage. However, you're shooting in a desert and nobody's squinting.

LOL, it reminds me of this short film called "Western Promises" (check it out on YouTube, it's great!). It's basically a fake documentary about filming a western. This one production assistant guy explains how they went out into the desert to really get the feel of the old west, and then they ended up building a massive studio there where they filmed the whole movie inside, in front of a giant green screen, lol.

Can you link that? My youtube search came up empty.

Was gonna check this out, but with the WoM I just went to see The Nice Guys for a third time instead.

Just got back from it.

It was ok. a bit stupid. but certainly not the worst thing in the world.

the plus side.........The Asian pilot chick was hot (:hrt:) and she was actually a strong/capable character who did something.

so yeah for that at least! :oldrazz:

I was entertained by it. My daughter was entertained by it. I hate to inform you of this but your opinions are not universal.

Independence Day: Resurgence is flat as a fart the new cast is horrible, the only entertaining thing is Brent Spiner being over the top, this movie just needs to disappear quickly and no sequel.

I mean... I don't think he was implying that it was universal that it wasn't entertaining

My wife loved the first one and forced me to go watch this with her tonight and I wish I had walked out.

CONS said:
- Didn't like it being futuristic 2016. Would've worked better if it was modern day 2016.

- It was choppy.

- Did Michael Bay direct this movie? Explosions galore. Edit: It was too much even for a sci-fi film.

- Should've re-titled it Cliche Day. One after the other, I lost count.

- No character development.

- Lot of useless characters like all those kids that nobody cared about.

- How do you fight against an alien invasion? Hire an African warlord!

- Everybody knew how to pilot a ship in this movie.

-
Floyd Rosenberg and Charlie "I want to bang that Asian chick" Miller should've been killed off. They were so fu**ing annoying!

- Sela Ward was Discount Diane Lane.
Killing her off was a shocker and kind of sexist.

- Jessie Usher was Discount Michael B. Jordan. Also, was not believable as a Marine captain.

- Maika Monroe was Discount Shailene Woodley.

- Charlotte Gainsbourg is not appealing to look at.

- The Sphere was dumb.

-
They killed off Jasmine & President Whitmore! BULLSH**!

- Facepalmed at the ending.
They were against a 3,000 mile-long mothership helmed by T-Rex sized Alien Queen (never seen that before!) with her own force field AND gun that couldn't hit the magic school bus so let's have the aliens bring in the Death Star for the next one!

Seriously, I felt like they half-assed the movie riding on the coat tails of the first one hoping the Star Wars-like battle scenes and marketing campaign would make it a hit. If it had nothing to do with Independence Day, it would've have done much better at the box office because this was a sequel nobody in general wanted.

On the bright side,

PROS said:
- Bill Pullman didn't miss a beat even if he was acting crazy this time.

- William Fichtner was the best. Commanding in every scene he was in.

- Brent Spiner stole the movie again. He was entertaining.

- Jeff Goldblum was more reserved.

- Liam Hemsworth was channeling Gale Hawthorne.

- It was nice to see the Chinese banker from The Dark Knight again.

- Killing off Will Smith was the right call. Steven Hiller would've felt out of place in this.

Independence Day was a classic. Resurgence was a soulless cash-in.

Rating: 2/10

I barely liked this movie, but I feel the need to defend it from some things. Why? I do not know.

Really? You're going to complain about Independence Day having explosions. Also am I the only one who never really got that criticism for Michael Bay. I don't like all his movies, but he makes big budget action movies. They're bound to have explosions.

And "Discount Michael B Jordan" "Discount Shaliene Woodley" they weren't even given enough personality to be "discount versions" of the actors. Other than the fact that Usher is an up and coming black actor and Monroe is an up and coming actress I don't see any similarities to MBJ or Woodley.

And "Charlotte Gainsbourg isn't appealing to look at" that's just a stupid thing to say. I agree but I'm not gonna to put that as a Con against a movie
