Well, yeah. From a general audience standpoint, films are packaged to them. They're not just going to go out and seek information on their favorite director to see what he's up to, and then flock to it. It all depends on what they're force fed.

If James Cameron made Bubble, people aren't going to flock to it just because the dude made True Lies. It'd have to be sold to the public a certain way.

Michael Bay films make money because they solve a basic need....to watch things blow up. Think anyone goes to 4th of July fireworks displays for the story?

They wouldnt market it with True Lies. "Bubble from the director of Titanic and Terminator 2"

I think a lot of people flocked to Avatar based on the fact that this was a James Cameron film. Sure actiony/scifi movies tend to do well but the major buzz behind this movie was he was directing it

my favorite lines in the movie were from brad pit (although the jew hunter had some brilliant lines)

'we're not in the nazi prisioner business, we're in the nazi killing business and brother business is BOOMING'

'I'm going to give you something you CAN'T take off'

I loved the part when Aldo tried to speak Italian...and sounded blatantly hillbilly. It was especially funny that he claimed he spoke the best Italian, when clearly he spoke the worst Italian :funny:

And Lt Hicox had the best line in the film...

"Well if this is it, old boy. I hope you don't mind if I go out speaking the King's".

Bad.Ass.

I loved Archie Hicox. I've never seen a movie character accept the fact he's going to die with such class.

"There's a special rung in hell reserved for people who waste good scotch. And seeing as I might be rapping on the door momentarily... I must say, damned good stuff, sir."

Same here. I liked Aldo, Shosanna, Bridget and Hugo Stiglitz too. Even Hitler was great I thought. He was ****ing hilarious.

Aldo was my favourite followed by Lt Archie Hiccox then Landa and fourth was Wilhelm Wicki.

Those are both awesome moments, and Fassbender sells so amazingly as well, probably my favourite scene in the movie.

3-D, CG, Critic praise

The average movie goers are ignorant of the going ons behind film making. Those who are informed probably went because of Cameron, but really it was this 3-D hype it was generating.

Also BLEH! Avatar is Ferngully + Last Samura + Major Chip Hazzard from Small Soldiers. But thats just me

brad pitt is being largly overlooked because of the excellent jew hunter but imho he had the best lines in the movie, the most qouteable lines in the movie and had the lines that stay with me long after I've forgotten the broad strokes of the movie.

Naaa Hicox had the most quotable lines. But maybe that's because I'm English :D

Aldo was brilliant though. As I mentioned above, the part where he tries to speak Italian, but sounds blatantly like a hillbilly had me in stitches.

"Bonjourno" [/thick southern accent]

:funny:

I think you are doing the average movie goer a disservice. I think the average joe can spot;
good editing from bad editing
good cinematography from bad cinematography
they know when a movie is too long
they can probably tell a good story from a bad story (I'm not talking about the difference between an original and derivative story, that's something else entirely).

I disagree. The average cinema goer doesn't have a clue about editing and cinematography, in the technical sense.

Sure they could be like "WOW that scenery is amazing!" or whatever. But when it comes to the technical things about making a movie, they don't have a Scooby.

I've pretty certain if they saw a movie with dull camera angles, poor composition something would tell them because they have previously seen good examples.

lol no man, they wouldn't. Poor composition? The average cinema goer doesn't have a clue what composition means.

As I said, they'd know if something looks nice. But all these technical terms? No chance.

I think I'll test it out and show my sister (who has no general interest in movies) a well edited movie with composition and cinematography and then show her a poor movie and she if she can tell the difference.

anyway back to QT, when I watch his movies I get the impression he uses impressive cuts and great visual angles, not because the shot requires it but because he can. at the start of the movie the camera shots are low key and subdued by the end of the movie the camera shots are sweeping and impressive.
