hi everyone, i got to hear simon kinberg speak today during a panel about how to translate comics to the big screen. he was one of the two guys that wrote x-men: the last stand. he was a really nice guy and he had some very interesting things to say.
he said that james marsden's Superman Returns schedule had nothing to do with Cyclops being killed so early. he said they intended to kill off scott from the very beginning for its emotional impact, and to show that if jean would kill the man she loved then anybody was fair game. however Kinberg said that anna paquin's schedule did get in the way. she was shooting another movie at the time and that prohibited her from being in more scenes. otherwise he said that Rogue would have had a lot more screen time- that was something they really wanted.
perhaps the most interesting news was regarding my favorite mutant, and i'm sure some of yours as well, Jean Grey. Kinberg first acknowledged that the schizophrenic Jean in the movie was a lot different from the Dark Phoenix we know from the comics. But he said that due to studio pressure to avoid the planet destroying themes, as well as due to the realistic tone that Singer had established in the first two films, they had to present Jean the way they did. He did consult with Chris Clairemont about Jean. Okay and here's the last piece of news- he said that it was no accident that Jean Grey had no dialogue in the last 45 minutes of the movie. That was totally due to the studio demands. Kinberg and Zak Penn, the other writer, absolutely wanted to incorporate more Jean/Phoenix stuff. but the studio said no we can't have too much Jean because this is Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry's movie. Kinberg said that he and Penn had to fight tooth and nail to get as much Jean in the movie as they did. He said obviosuly they won most of the battles in the first half of the movie, and lost most of the battles in the 2nd half. He said the studio wanted to keep things simple, so instead of having to write awful dialogue for Jean in the 2nd half, things like "I will destroy you now!", he said they were just forced to keep her quiet. I found all of this stuff fascinating, I hope you guys do too. If you want to hear the full panel discussion, the moderator said it will be availabe in podcast form, i think he said on the apple ipod site or something.
