BvS Is anyone else not excited about Superman and Batman? I feel nothing but dread. - Part 2

Sometimes you don't realise what you've got... till it's gone.

Exactly. My head is spinning now!
I don't think the ending would be too much of a downer, if Batman, WW and perhaps other heroes have united in the spirit of Superman, and there is hope he could be resurrected, etc. But it would depend on the execution.

Like the same idea proposed about Batman just prior to TDKR's release, killing off Superman is a hugely stupid idea.
The DOS in the comics was a cheap gimmick, and it would be a cheap gimmick here.

Agreed. Killing off Superman in his second on screen appearance would be ridiculous, and make his inevitable reappearance that much lamer.

There was on report I saw where the author was speculating that Doomsday would be a cameo for a future film (Man of Steel 2) and that they are doing character designs upfront so that the will be consistency throughout the (Snyder) universe.

Could you expand on this?

The same way some Marvel fans were nitpicky and bitter over TDK's success, some DC fans are now acting the same way.

Just as Nolan films were now being considered "Too Dark/Serious", MCU films are suddenly too jokey...which you could only really say about IM3 or Thor: TDW.

Thor The Dark World was ruined by the jokes. Especially in the climax. It's perfectly fine to undercut tension with a bit of comedy. Blockbusters have been doing it since Jaws. But in The Dark World... there just wasn't any tension to undercut because the jokes came too thick and fast and were blatantly forced in there to fit a quota of some kind.

I love IM3 though. Comedy fits the character of Tony Stark. Even when he's suffering from PTSD i can imagine him still being snarky and irreverent because that's his defense mechanism, not broody like a Bruce Wayne. And i like Shane Black's sense of humour. Very genre savvy.

I'd like to see a little bit more humour in Dawn of Justice. At least some more joy from Superman and i'd like if Wonder Woman had a breezy, care free attitude. Maybe she shows Kal that you can have fun being a superhero, that he shouldn't let his responsibilities weigh him down.

I don't know if it's the humour that I find unappealing in Marvel movies, so much as what I perceive to be a kind of frothy, synthetic quality to them. It's hard to define and, luckily for Marvel, it seems to be unique to me.

I know what you mean with certain films, like The Dark World. I thought the humour was done really well in The Winter Soldier and IM3 though.

Only Shane Black would have a normally voiceless, nameless goon talking to the hero about the distance between Tennessee and Miami. Or one of them just drop his gun and confess he thinks he's employers are weird. It kinda reminded me of the Long Kiss Goodnight, which i think is really underrated.

It's not unique to you. I feel much the same about the Marvel studios films.

From my perspective of things, it was mainly because people(like Anno) would go into other threads, and start talking about how Marvel is lame, and TDK is a flawless masterpiece, and Nolan should be awarded the Nobel Piece Prize, etc. Just about every thread turned into a "why Nolan is such a god, and Marvel is a joke". It wasn't even so much a "DC v Marvel" thing, as much as it was a "TDK/Nolan v Marvel" thing.

Hell, even things like The Avengers trailer were getting bashed heavily. I remember hearing "oh god, it's just Transformers with Marvel heroes/The trailer is all flash, no substance/I'm glad Nolan knows how to properly make a movie trailer that has teh feels and stuff/Ugh, rock music in a trailer? What are we 5 years old? etc etc".

You couldn't go into an upcoming Marvel movie before The Avengers, and not hear about why TDK was the bestest thing ever, how TDKR will be even better, and how "silly and pedestrian" Marvel is with their movies.

I'd love to know what he actually thought of TDKR.

Anno thinks TDKR is a masterpiece of course.

He's over at CBM and when I was there, let's just say we met.

He's a ****ing Nolanite.

Its sad. I think the crazier Nolanites have actually put me off the Batman movies, a bit. I mean, I still like them, but I find that I haven't actually wanted to rewatch any of them since TDKR.

I will admit, when I saw TDKR for the first time I loved it. I was blown away but the ending.

Now I think it's just good. Not as great. I do feel it isn't the best ending to a trilogy ever. I mean I think Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is the best ending to a trilogy ever. Return of the Jedi is a great one too only problem with Jedi is ****ing Ewoks.

I do feel Nolan watched both films because there are similarities.

In Indy 1 & 3, he was on a search for religious artifacts while fighting Nazis.
New Hope & Jedi, Death Star with huge space fight mainly.

So I see why he used the League in the Rises and it made sense.

I think it's good. I like the trilogy as a whole and enjoy the films. I do feel Rises is the weakest out of the Trilogy though.

I just *sigh* my enthusiasm has just been extinguished for this movie. I was excited as all hell last year when that Batman and Superman logo arose at CC, but it's turned into something else entirely it seems. It just seems Snyder is trying to constantly adjust to all these changes. And yes, even if Terrio is rewriting, I don't think that will do much in the end. Couple that with MOS not being all that, I just don't have much faith in this. If anything, this could be the next ASM2. Just a hodge podge of a film trying to reconcile all the various elements being thrown into it to make more money.

Can anyone here change my mind? What do I have to look forward to this movie besides Affleck as Batman and Cavill? Why should I believe that this is going to be a great movie?

I agree with all your points.

You may not be far from the truth... but, Terrio has done a good job apparently :cwink:

I truly pity those who are too stubborn and arrogant to enjoy one or the other. It seems like a disease to me...loving one side so much that the other side is seen as the "enemy" and you can't watch or enjoy their material without feeling angst, jealousy, and anger. Such bias really reduces people's ability to use their judgement and be fair, imo.

I can't imagine being a DC fan/Marvel hater and not enjoying things like The Avengers, The Winter Soldier, DOFP, etc etc. And I can't imagine being a Marvel lover/DC hater and hating the TDK trilogy...it's truly a preposterous notion as I thoroughly enjoyed all those films.

I understand having a slight preference for one side (perhaps if you grew up with them), but the childish pure hatred of the other side is tragic to see. It's a glorious era of superhero films for the lucky ones who are free of this fanboy disease, though.

More humor would definitely be welcome. The differing ideologies of the superheroes would make for good drama as well as laughs.

I feel rather the same. I still want to enjoy the movie, however, so I've changed my stance on it. Here's what I wrote in another thread, perchance you'd benefit from adopting a similar attitude. :)

Eh, my stance on BvS and Snyder in general is that I've given up on expecting great storytelling or substance. I really believe MoS would've been a masterpiece in Nolan's hands, but we're stuck with Snyder, and based on MoS and his previous work, I've come to the point where I don't really care about the story anymore...

All I want from Snyder and BvS/JL is the jaw-dropping spectacle. That's one thing that Snyder can actually give me. So, strange as it sounds, I as a viewer would rather see the biggest, awesomest aesthetic of Batman, Superman and the rest than some intricate plotline. I don't think Goyer/Snyder can pull it off.

Batman's story is nowhere near the quality of the TDK trilogy? Don't care anymore He looks absolutely badass, and my dream Batman come to life. I just want to watch him move and look awesome in a stylized Gotham city and walk around with the rest of the leaguers. I only care about the aesthetic now, because I have no hope in Snyder/Goyer to tell a brilliant story.

Same goes for Superman. Don't feel attached to the character, don't really care what happens to him or even if his character arc sucks. They missed the oppurtunity to make me care in MoS. But, he looks incredible! It's like Superman from the comics come to life and now all I'm looking forward to is to watch him fly and shoot lasers from his eyes and use his powers in IMAX.

Basically, I'm taking a "Transformers" approach (thought it's hopefully not that extreme). Watching it purely for the visual spectacle, which is sure to be prodigious. And hey, if they somehow tell this masterpiece of a story, all the better! At least with this type of thinking I won't be devastated like I was with MoS, which led me to have a terrible taste in my mouth, even if the movie was alright. I want to enjoy BvS.

So having said that, bring on Doomsday! Or whatever villain would provide the most awesome, thrilling visual extravaganza.
