Is Marvel Studios Dropping the Ball?

I don't think Watchmen will do that good, mainly because it's R. It might get good reviews, but R-rated summer movies are usually lucky to make over 200 mil. (Excluding sequels to well-known franchises like Terminator)

300 did very well and is a big part of their marketing campaign.

Im not saying they have it easy, but I think they have a lot of pros going toward them. That R is definitely staring them in the face. I think if it is a success (visually, story-wise, good reviews, even mediocre box office) it might make a big splash in cinematic history

He's no longer with Marvel, Feige took his place.
Now he's the Producer of the Marvel Studios films and the Goddamn CEO of all of the films. Feige took his old place. Avi is still with Marvel. He just got a raise. :down

Don't put Watchmen in the win column yet. It is R-rated, and Snyder is supposidly having trouble trimming down the movie from 3hrs. This means, watered down theatrical film (we won't get the REAL movie til DVD, which frustrates me to no end!!!)

Also, Marvel has several years and projects planned. Past Watchmen and TDK, WB has nothing really lined up other than projects which have been in development hell for years.

I am not rooting for a side, but I am saying WB does not have as much momentum as people think. TDK is a monster, but if that is all they have, Marvel wins by sheer numbers.

You make a really good point, but there's moving and then there's MOVING. It just seems in comparison to other projects these one's are really just dragging. Once again, there's also the matter of securing talent for these films. Jon Favreau is still not officially signed to IM2. It's not just release dates I'm talking here, it's the overall business practices. Between that, the Ed Norton disputes, lack of SDCC news, no releases for all of 2009, and no Matt Vaughn, it just seems like most news coming out over the last few months is troubling. It makes me wonder what's going on. Am I the only one seeing bad signs?

Honestly there's nothing to be worried about Iron man2. It made a lot of money so I'm 100% they gonna be on time. On the other hand I Have no idea what 's gonna happen to Hulk.

Yeah but it came out in early '07 with no competition.

Not in summer, when there's a new "big movie" every week. Watchmen may be lucky because the only movies I see going past 300 mil domestic next year are Wolverine, Terminator & Transformers.

True that. I still think they have a fighting chance, but your right to be worried.

WB might not have green lighted any new comic adaptions yet but they do have many good projects to choose from with great potential like Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, Shazam, The Flash and Green Lantern.

That's something.

Gee...amid all the complaining...today marvel announced that a Venom movie is in the works...

WHy is it every two months we get a thread like this?

Indeed they have many good projects, everybody knows that except them. For a reason we don't know they like to humiliate them self. They are laughing at aquaman, their own creation in entourage tv series. They want to bring plastic man a big risk since they gonna have to pay Mr.Keanu reeve something like 10-20M$:whatever:

I have no knowledge of Watchmen, so I'm not anticipating it... yet. So right now I'm not worried about it one bit.

Me neither. To me its like WB is making an excuse not to be able to bring Justice league or flash so they try to impress us with watchmen.

It's a good thing JL isn't in theatres yet. If that tanks it'll bring several franchises with it, including Flash, to WB's film franchise graveyard.

The fact they didn't hire a professional actress for WW is a huge warning sign for that movie IMO.

What's this about Downey and Favreau not being on board for Iron Man II? I'm pretty sure that they are on board.

Anyways I don't think that Marvel is dropping the ball seeing as the next films come out in 2010. They have time. I figure we shall get some more announcements by the end of the year. Don't be so impatient.

That deal has yet to be agreed upon. even Sam Jackson just recently mentioned Favs isn't quite on board yet, which make's his return as Fury up in the air. I'm not impatient, just worried. It seems Marvel is just not handling things with the best of care.

Ok let's forget about Jla but what is so complicated about making GL,The flash or GH? How can you come up with Watchmen first?which is more complicated to do than The flash?

Although I Cant wait to see Gatchman that s a good news:woot:

Watchmen already has a set story. You have to adapt Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash.

I wouldnt say its difficult in general they just need to find the right creative team.

Just because Marvel dishes them out almost every year people expect the same from DC but if you really look at the Marvel flicks they have a varied level of quality

That they do, but so far with the two they've released themselves I think they were both quite good, despite the huge differences in revenue.

Lets hope its consistent.

There is no excuse about WB. I mean in term of comics/movies they have like over 25 years of experience. Marvel about half of it. + WB is by far richer than Marvel. So yes there is a mather of competion.

That they want or not there is a competition between the2 major companies. Not only the fans but now its the media who recently said that Batman beat spider-man at the box office on the front page.

You re right! Marvel didn't always do good movies and I never said Marvel is better than WB. But they deliver the merchandise. Even if its wrong but they tried at least. WB is starting to deliver but the wrong characters. If I ask for a Big mac don't come up with a McFish. Even if it's from McDonald cause that's not what I order.

Dropping the ball? No. Realizing how hard it is to get movies made? Yes.

Spider Vader

and anyone else who's never read Watchmen.

That book is as essential to a superhero comic collection as the bible is to a Christians bookshelf. You should do yourself the favor of plunking down a few bucks for the trade paperback. Its every bit as good as people say it is.

Even if you dont buy it, go see the movie so you can support the continuation of quality comic book films.
