Is Super-Heroism Possible?

I will fully agree that thinking the universe the way it stands is the way it is, would be a fool hardy way to live. No person interested in science should merely believe the universe as we understand it is all there is. However, there are limitations to the universe itself, and those should be looked at in this search, rather than using it as a barrier to it. And forgetting them altogether would create the same loss of productivity.

Agreeing to disagree is not a problem.

I'm not saying that there aren't limits. I'm just not sure we agree on what those limits are in some cases.

But yes. Agree to disagree. Always helps. More people need to learn how to do that.

I guess the real question to ask is, would you do it? Would you dress in a costume and adopt a flashy name? Patrol the cities at night and day? Doing what you could to make the world a better place? And I'm not talking about helping an old lady across the street or selling cookies to raise money for a field trip. I'm talking about becoming a super-hero. If you could, would you? I know I would. And have.

Probably not. I'm better at strategy and execution. Doing things in the standard hero sense would bother me.

I haven't done the whole costume thing as of yet, but i have patrolled my local area. You see I know there is a guy dealing (maybe even making) drugs out of a house around the area. I've worked out where it is and thought about calling the cops...but they work within the law and need hard evidence. So i've thought about now taking it done my way (which could get me hurt pretty bad). My mate Bes has already said he's up for it and we are going to try it next month sometime....Need to make a few things first :)

Happy birthday for the 14th....

Thanks.

And what exactly are you going to make?

Not a problem.

I'm thinking of making some weapons. Sharpen some tools I may need and make all things untraceable. Plus I've got to make sure they can't see who I am...so in that way, I guess I may need to make a costume of some sort.

I think in real life, it would be hard to garner satisfaction from an endeavor like that. In comics, superheroes are constantly saving the world as a whole. In a normal person's case, though, you'd be saving one, maybe a few lives at a time. It would feel good until you realized that in the time it took you to save whoever it was, hundreds (if not thousands) of other people died in a hundred other places.

Then there's the incredible possibility of error. Perhaps you bring the wrong person to justice? Suppose you kill the wrong person? Police do it, and look at the resources available to them.

I don't know. Those are just some of the reasons I don't think it's really feasible in the real world.

Well remember what I originally said, the house i'm going to break into with my mate is in my local area. First and foremost, they deal drugs and look the part of not really caring about life. I need to make sure they can't see my face, can't recognize me, and that I can't be pricked by any type of drug or something.

Also i want to make sure that when i do bust this place, all things i may use are untraceable to the police. Once I go into this place, i'm calling the police so they can arrive and will be able to enter if they hear people fighting inside. So If I leave something around, I don't want the cops to came looking for me thinking about dealing or using drugs.

The people who claimed to have attempted it, weren't looking to prevent crime, more or less stop it as they come across it. (Which makes no sense to me.)

However, the whole statistic of who they're saving I wouldn't say applies. Now, if there were some superhero organization or something, and thousands of people died due to their disorganization, then I'd say they'd probably feel guilt.

But no single person can save thousands of people really.

Beating out forensics is going to be hard. I'm quite curious how you plan to walk into this and out without being traceable.

I didn't mean to imply that they'd feel guilt, just sort of like "What did I really do?" It's like saving a few grains of sand from going out with the tide.

I'm sure it's more of the, "Well, that many more would have" situation with them. If they did nothing, more would have died, rather than the few they helped save.

Sure, it seems like nothing, I agree.

I'm just thinking I need to shower up before I do this. I'm going to wear surgical gloves under my actually gloves. I'm going to by a pair of runners from the shops. Then I'm thinking of just burning everything once its done. Or waiting for the garbage collection mornings and doing it the night before, so once i'm done, i'll just dump all the stuff i use in the local area house bins to cover my tracks. Once the garbage is collected, they wont be able to find out who i am. And even if they do, i'll spread all the stuff out so it'll be difficult to find.

If i can't be untraceable to the cops, i'll be untraceable to the drug dealers.

Yeah, I suppose. There's also the morality of it. I personally could not condone everyone taking the law into their own hands because they thought they were being heroic. But, as a real life "superhero", that's exactly what I'd be propagating. "Cops wouldn't do it? Do it yourself!"

The way I see it, i'm going to break into this place. If someone else is there (i'm sure there will be), i'll try my best to take them on while either Bes or I call the cops from their phone.

Then we'll either take off or stick around until the cops arrive. At least if the cops hear something inside, they'll be able to come in. And once they come in, they'll see the drugs everywhere.

The night before the garbage pick up would be a huge tip off to the cops.

I don't normally condone actual vigilantism.

Thats what i'm thinking...or maybe I could hold it off to 2 nights before the garbage pick-up. Or even doing it the night before my mate garbage pick-up. That way, we could do this thing in my area, drop him off at his place and get changed there into streets cloths. Grab our stuff and go for a walk during the very early morning and just dump all our stuff in his areas bins.

Lol, great! We're pretty good at this, :oldrazz:

lol

Also, I would only truly condone vigilantism, when there is no other choice, and a large amount of lives may be lost before something official could be done. And then only for that task. No single person should be above their peers.

I can agree with that. When multiple (or even a single) life is at stake, right then, well, the right thing is to at least TRY to do something. But that's it. It shouldn't be your life, handing out your own brand of justice.

Agreed. Singular people are rarely, if ever, qualified to make large class decisions such as who is guilty, and who deserves what. In some situations, it's obvious. Drug house down the street, and it needs to be taken care of. Call the cops. NOW, if you call the cops more than once, and somehow, the house clears out before they get there, then you know you have a dirty cop. Try to raise awareness about the house through more legal channels, tell other police stations and such, and usually an internal investigation will go down, while another precinct takes care of the house. If those don't work, then yeah, something else must be done.

But I'd enormously warn anybody thinking about running into a drug making house alone about the almost certainly fatal result of doing it.

Well, either way, they'll check garbage, but if you do it the night before, you're guaranteed that they check garbage first.

And I wouldn't use your friends trash route either. Because if they suspect you at all, they'll check everybody you know.
