I certainly hope the wii is a fad, because I really don't want this focus on non-gamers and mindless simplicity to spill over into the next generation. :(

Play Metroid Prime 3, and tell me that those controls are mindless simplicity with a straight face, and I will give you a mirror so that you may know the definition of deluded.

dont knock the psp even as the proud nintendo chic even i have to admit that sony has done better than the oher 95% of the other companies that have gone against nintendo. the psp stil exists

wonderswan
lynx
gamegear
neogeo poceket

can you find one of these in the store

two of those are from the era of the first gameboy. :whatever:

the psp has been around for less than 3 years

wonderswan (solely intended for the japanese market and from a toy company rather than a major gaming company)
lynx 1989-1994 (5 years)
gamegear 1990-1997 (7 years)
neogeo poceket 1998-2003 (5 years though only ever really took off in japan)

The psp has to be around in two years time to even just match those system's performance

Try again

The Wonderswan, Lynx and NeoGeo Pocket were nowhere near as big or popular as the PSP. They were failures and onlt appealed to a limited market. I thought the Gamegear did good considering the success the Gameboy had. The PSP is doing relatively well so far and much better than the first 3 I mentioned. It doesnt have a cloud of danger over its head. While it wont ever catch up to the DS, it does have staying power and doesnt look like its going anywhere anytime soon

PSP has already sold more units than any of the next-gen consoles, and it's the most popular non-Nintendo handheld ever produced. The PSP brand is clearly here to stay.

died a very cold and lonely death so sad*sniff sniff*...anywho who's up for a round of Wii sports!

Fad

I have no desire to learn how to use a new type of controller.
Games are more fun when I don't have to think about what my hands are doing. (imho)

Dude, Gamegear was WAY ****ing before it's time. Just like Dreamcast was.

That was Sega's console problem. All the systems they made people knocked off as a "expensive nintendo knockoff with a few extra gadgets!!!!" when in reality, they were amazing.

Game Gear came out in what, 1990? When did the first fully 32+color gameboy come out? GBA in 2001? Yeah, thought so.

No games, no success. Basically what it all comes down to. Doesn't matter if its ahead of its time or whatever.

The Wii is obviously here to stay. Nintendo will continue to make it's gimmeck games that will sell to the mainstream (albeit I love Wii Sports) and create new novelty multiplayer as well (Wario Ware). I mean Wii Fit is the next Wii Sports, confirmed and done.

But as long as it is selling that well, 3rd parties as we're finally starting to see this holiday are going to jump on the Wii train as that is where the money is at with the most installation. they will make more games for the Wii as they are cheaper to make and has a wider demographic. This year has not been that great for 3rd parties, but the future holds a different sotry methinks.

So whether you like motion controls or not the Wii is here to stay. And do expect Microsoft and Sony's next outings to have motion controls of some form. I understand if you don't care for the current library or the control (I personally think it is brilliant when used properly as Nintendo has demonstrated with a number of games and a few notable 3rd party outings have as well). But to call it a novelty or a gimmeck is nothing but petulant and non-sensical whining by brand loyalists.

I think a Wii60 is the best of both worlds honestly. But if not, cool. But if you think Wii is a fad that is fading, you are dellusional and simply ignoring reality...which I suppose makes sense given these are...gamers, I guess. ;) :p

P.S. Those who say Wii won't have killer apps is being childish when Wii already has two. I might add that most sites and publications ranked Twilight Princess on Wii as game of the year and better than Gears of War.

I'm suprised to read that some think the Wii is a fad. I was under the impression that the hardcore gamer would consider the Wii the first step toward the future of gaming. But change is scary, I guess? Enough to call the Wii a gimmick. Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3 are two of the coolest, most enjoyable games I've ever played. But I guess I like the Wii because I feel like I'm more involved in the game rather than just sitting on my couch pushing buttons.

Most gamers don't really get physical activity, so it scares them. Man was afraid of fire at one time, so you know.

Not true. Gears of War and Oblivion were the unanimous GOTY contenders, and it's hard to count "Twilight Princess" as a Wii killer app when it's on the Gamecube.

Learning bad, huh? Guess you're a Sony fanboy, reuse the same design over and over again, but wait there's motion control on that too, the horror! Also, with every controller you need to think about what your hand are doing at least the fingers. In terms of learning to use the control scheme, it's no different than learning the control scheme on a new game. Do you never buy any games because you don't want to have to learn how the game controls different from the first ever game you played?

I can only remember one right now but Gametrailers.com picked TP on Wii as game of the year as did one of the magazines (I forget which one). I know Gamespot chose GOW, but they always have hard ons for pretty graphics (I'm sorry any game whose multi-player is limited to 2 people in the room at a time and first player is all of 7 hours is not GOTY imo, just overrated for visuals). IGN chose Okami. I don't remember the others.

And I would say Oblivion was a great game that I never got further than 60% on due ot its size. But amazing. I still take TP over it any day. GOW, as I said was a disappointment that people drool over the visuals of.

If I wanted to go swing something around to hit a virtual ball, or swing a virtual sword, or roll a virtual bowling ball, I'd go outside and play baseball, or chop at a tree/foilage with an axe/machete, or actually go bowling.

If I wanted to play a baseball game, or a game like Zelda, or Bowling, I want to be able to sit my fatass on the couch and hit a few buttons and get a response.

But its been out in Japan a year longer, and US for half a year longer than even the 360. Of course its going to have sold more units....?

I think the future of gaming will be the gradual immertion of the gamer into the gaming world. More involvement. You'd rather chop down a tree then face a Zelda baddie? In the immortal words of Bruce Lee, "Boards don't hit back."

Neither do video games.

I play video games to relax and zone out whilst my fingers do the work. I don't play video games to simulate the things that the character is doing on the screen.

I was against the Wii remote at first. After buying one i realized its not that bad. You dont actually have to do what the character is doing. All it takes is slight flick of the wrist ( about the same as pressing a normal button). Once you play it you will find out. It doesnt require effort at all

Once you play it?

I've had a Wii since almost day one. I've played quite a many games on it. But still, it requires way to much effort than I'd like to put into playing a video game.
