Is this in-universe with Arrow & Flash?

Apparently the people who think I'm "jumping the gun" didn't see/hear Marc Guggenheim say this: "We are thrilled to have Matt Ryan reprise the role of John Constantine on an upcoming episode of Arrow. Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired. The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to bring John Constantine to Arrow and the CW’s DC universe. It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series.”

Note the use of the word "reprise".

This is absolutely the same Constantine character from Daniel Cerone and Co.'s series. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

The word "reprise" just means they are playing the same character, not necessarily the exact same version of said character. Pays reprised her role as Tina, but not the same Tina.

And even if it is the same exact Constantine, it doesn't mean both shows take place in the same universe. They could use multiverse shenanigans to bring one singular character out of the Constantine universe whilst leaving the rest behind.

Its' the same character for frick sakes. You'd' have to be a frikin idiot to not realise there's a very slim chance it's not the same one.

Fami is just pi**ed this character is back on the agenda I mean he was crapping on it throughout it's entire run.

Just like when you were adamant that Entertainment Weekly confirmed Supergirl was in the Arrowverse? Or when you were adamant that the Wells character wasn't Eobard?

All I'm saying is that we haven't gotten an explicit confirmation yet. Not that we won't, nor that it isn't likely.

Just that you have a history of selectively interpreting news stories, being adamant about your interpretation, and then later being proven incorrect.

Will you get over this already? I never once said anything negative about the character himself nor Ryan's portrayal of him. I also consistently maintained that I liked the show, and wanted to see it continue. I just called people out for posting delusional interpretations of the realistic chances of it happening.

You really seem to have an issue with either reading comprehension or dealing with assessments which differ from your own.

So why didn't they just bring the show over again? :csad:

Well, it is better then nothing. He is the perfect John.

A guest character spot carries significantly less risk than picking up an entire show that has already been cancelled once.

Constantine would have done better if they had chosen Netflix from the start.

Edit: I feel CW have kept their options open in case Supernatural gets canceled, then I can see them think of spin-off series like Hellblazer featuring Constantine.

They are calling it a one shot .
We shall see if it leads to anything else for the character in the future .

I thought this was part of Breaking Bad universe since Mike was in it......

you mean hector ? cause i don't remember jonathan banks appearing in constantine....

If there were still any doubters out there who weren't sure that Matt Ryan's appearance on Arrow was meant to retroactively bring NBC's Constantine series into the continuity of the "Flarrow"-verse, I bring this bit of news:
In terms of whether we should assume that this is firmly considered the same version of Constantine from his own series (and thus retroactively linking the Constantine series to the Arrow-verse), Mericle said, “Absolutely. He is coming in fully as who he was on the show. We’re getting wardrobe. We’re very excited to have him. He’s a tremendous actor. It’s so cool to have that cross-pollination. We are very lucky and DC was very generous letting us have him.”

Now THAT'S an explicit confirmation. That's all I was looking for; unambiguous language and a direct response to a specific question.

I really, really hope they use this opportunity to resolve the rising darkness arc in some fashion. I don't expect them to revisit Chaz or Zed (especially if this is truly a one-shot, but I suspect we may see Ryan again if it is well received), but at least mentioning what happened after the Constantine finale would be a nice thing to do.

It is painfully clear to me that this is the same Constantine , and I ouldnt be happier

Now THAT'S an explicit confirmation.

So were the comments from Guggenheim.

Apparently, though, the series is only in-continuity with Arrow because John is only showing up on that show (at least according to Wikipedia, anyway, since they refuse to add a reference to Constantine to their pages for Flash, Legends, and Vixen). :whatever:

I imagine this appearance is kind of a test shot for magic in this universe, and if they get a positive response, it's likely they'll repeat him appearing in future episodes, and maybe shore up the magical themes a bit for future stories, i.e. introducing magical characters like Specter, Solomon Grundy (we've already seen Cyrus Gold), Dr. Fate, etc.

Besides John introducing himself so Team Arrow (and the audience that didn't watch Constantine) get to know him a bit, I don't think they're going to explain what happened, it would be too much, they should leave it for if the show returns someday. Helping Oliver with Sara's situation and how to deal with magic is more than enough.

If they're not going to bring closure to the character there's no point in emphasizing that it's the same Constantine from the cancelled show. They were already stupid enough to end a show that had no realistic chance of continuing on a cliffhanger; to bring that character back and not resolve it is a pretty harsh thing to do to fans that have been strung along this far.

:whatever:

And contrived exposition about what happened off screen on another show is dumb and unnecessary. He's going to say what, that he beat the rising darkness, Manny and blahblahblah... is beyond lame. John having the same characterization (look, personality...) is what matters the most.

I want Jim Corrigan to go in there too. It would be the ultimate blue balls for him to be teased twice and not get a frikin pay off.

They could give him the same look and characterization very easily without explicitly linking it to the cancelled show. Just throw the fans a bone, even if it's just a brief explanation. There's no reason to go out of their way to link the Arrowverse to a cancelled show that ended on a cliffhanger if they're not going to give us some small measure of resolution.

If they didn't want to resolve the cliffhanger they should have just cast Matt Ryan as a new John Constantine, like they did with the 90s Flash characters Tina and Bellows on the new Flash show.

Indeed. that is my biggest hope for this appearance, that it eventually leads to us seeing the Specter in a live action show. I myself was really let down by the cancellation for that reason (besides really liking the show overall).
