There's talk now about consoles becoming upgradable.

As in, there being a Ps4+ or an Xbone+ before a Ps5. That breaks the boundaries of what consoles are supposed to be. Exactly like smartphones.

Do you think you can appreciate that or do you think that is the wrong thing to happen to the console gaming market?

If there were some way you could upgrade your current console, then maybe -although then you might as well just get a PC. But buying an entirely new console that's a little better than the one you already have seems like a waste of money.

No. Not really interested in a half way jump. Even PS3 to PS4 didn't seem like a big deal, compared to PS1 to 2 or 2 to PS3.

I wouldn't mind being able to upgrade my consoles without having the company throw a ****fit for opening it up. Boosting the RAM or whatever would be great.

If it goes that route, I don't think there will be a PS5 or next Xbox really. At least, not in the traditional sense, even if there is a machine called the PS5 or whatever Xbox (I personally don't think there will be another Xbox anyway, but that's a different topic). It would definitely change the landscape of home consoles and how they work, that's for sure.

Not really surprised about this to be honest. This is just the latest initiative in an ongoing trend of turning consoles into toasters. Over the past several years we've seen every single defining feature and advantage that consoles have be completely eroded. If they go through with this, what is even the appeal of consoles anymore?

The only thing they'll accomplish by doing this is making PCs a thousand times more attractive to people who have mostly been console gamers up to this point.

I hope not. I like being able to upgrade a PC to play newer games, but I also like being able to buy any game on a given console and not have to worry about it running.

This generation of console was weak when it came out so replacing it early wouldnt be a bad thing so bring it on.

that's a kick to the face to the 60 million people who are happily using their Ps4s and xbones.

I find this to be a weak argument bc neither console has even lived to their potential yet. The XB1 came out with less than ideal specs unforutnately due to Kinect but the PS4 is quite a bit more powerful than it, which makes it ironic that its the one reported to be doing this upgrade thing. The boundaries of the system hasnt been pushed to its limit

it's the codename for the rumored more powerful, VR ready X1 due out in 2017.

whether or not it's considered the Xbox 1.5 or the actual next Xbox, that's to be determined.

although this isn't a press release it's official confirmation of the Ps4K.

Andrew House, president and global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told the Financial Times that the “high-end PS4” would be more expensive than the current $350 version.

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” he said. “We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.”

The new console, which is codenamed “Neo”, will target hardcore gamers, he said, as well as consumers with a 4K television set looking for more high-resolution content.
However, in a move that may disappoint some fans, Mr House said that Sony would not be unveiling its new console next week and refused to say when or at what price the unit would go on sale. “We want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety,” he said.

Nonetheless, he downplayed concerns that the move would cause interoperability problems between the old and new PS4 hardware.

“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” he said.

sucks the Neo won't be unveiled at E3.

hopefully MS can deliver by announcing the Slim and/or Scorpio.

alright, since we have no choice but to accept this reality, now that the Ps4 pro's been announced, what do you think?

I'm not on board with iterative consoles at all. If I wanted to buy new hardware every two years I'd play on PC.

Unless it has new games you can't get on the regular PS4, I don't feel any reason to get one. I haven't read up on the Pro or the Scorpio too much but from the little I know it appears all they offer is smoother, prettier versions of the same titles we can buy on the PS4 and XBONE. If either of those things was a big issue I'd sooner move to PC than spend money on a console that's a bit better.

The obsession with increasing power is futile anyway. The consoles will never match a PC, at least not for long. What ultimately matters are the games. And, with some exceptions, processing power does not automatically make for better games.

even if it's not up to par with PC, higher power can make a difference on console.
