Fant4stic "It's Clobberin' Time!" - The Ben "Thing" Grimm Thread

I think the thing that disappoints me most is that the leaked bust photo looked so much better.

Since we saw that, I've been hoping the Thing wold look at least that good and maybe better. It's frustrating and disappointing to finally get a clear view and see he looks worse.

I was thinking that too Willie. From the concept art, to the leaked prop bust that was used against the green screen, to the promo poster in South America to this picture, the design got worse and worse as it went on.

I just don't comprehend how this design got approved....oh wait, it was the same people who approved the black slinky suit, now I understand.

It honestly looks like a more beefed up version of Chiklis' version, minus an expressive face.

A seamless transition from comic panel to big screen. Even if the final product is full of badly written characters, there's that.

As you and I both agreed on page two of this very thread, this looks like the Thing:

But we didn't get that, did we? Instead, we got this:

There's no way I can be happy with that. If you are, great, but I've been hoping for the Thing all this time and I'm not happy with what we got.

Hard to argue with this.
At this point, I'm hoping we'll see a lot more expressiveness when we see the character in full mo-cap. I'm also hoping we'll see some further evolution of Ben in this film and that what has been revealed at this point is actually the early, "lumpy" Thing as seen in the first 30+ issues of the comic.

In this picture, he really looks a lot more like a GOLEM.

I like this Thing design. Looks big and strong like some sort of...thing.

I see the Thing I grew up with...for me it's a good look.

Looks like The Thing. I'm far more curious to see how he looks in motion. Bell is a great mo-cap actor and I hope the character is imbued with a real sense of mass.

It looks better than I thought it would, so I'm not hating now. I need to see him in motion.

I think the fact that its not symmetrical is why I hate it so much. He looks deformed because of it, like he would be asking Reed to put him out of his misery every 5 minutes. I just feel bad every time I look at him.

Symmetry is not good creature design. People are not perfectly symmetrical. I find it interesting he's appears to lack perfect symmetry.

We've heard this argument before though, haven't we?

Does Johnny being black make or break the Human Torch?
Does Sue and Johnny being adopted siblings make or break the relationship?
Does Ben being short and slender pre-transformation make or break the character?
Does Reed, Ben and Johnny all being the same age make or break their relationships?
Do the containment suits make or break the team?
Do the vents and springs make or break the team?
Does Doom being Domashev make or break the character?
Does Domashev being an angry blogger make or break the character?
Does not having a brow make or break Ben?

Do any one of these creative changes make or break the FF? Not at all.
But once you start adding them all up, the FF breaks.
Bravo, sir, bravo.
I feel like this should be stickied at the top of every thread just as a reminder.

My concern is that it's not a simple asymmetry of design but rather an inconsistency of CGI rendering. He looks different in every photo we've seen, and the more I see, the more it looks like bad CGI.

It actually looks a lot like the drawings I used to do as a kid . . . and that's a bad thing, because I'm no artist.

When I used to draw the Thing, the arms would never line up right, one would be bigger than the other, one arm-pit would be lower than the other etc.

These stills remind me very much of those drawings.

Sigh the four pictures of The Thing

1. Trailer
2. Panama poster
3. Empire picture
4. Entertainment Weekly picture

are all in different angles, also different lighting.

Good! It should suck to be The Thing.
