That's why "John Carter of Mars" was such a great title that Disney skipped on due to that stupid exec who thought 'Mars' would be a turn off..only to confuse people even more when it was called 'John Carter', featuring giant apes and whatever. Yeah, the whole Jack Reacher/Alex Cross/John Carter/Jack Ryan thing was severely getting on my nerves. Give it a damn title - don't just give us a name. You're not making Forrest Gump - it's not some epic life-affirming journey.

I would just call this Shadow One, personally.

I don't understand; the actual titles for those projects were so much more badass:

Wonderful titles. Grrr.

It's all about creating a recognizable 'brand' that can be milked dry.

The ironic thing about John Carter is that they apparently removed the "of Mars" part because they thought it wouldn't sell to non-sci fi fans. However, they instead had a title that was extremely boring and didn't appeal to anyone.

studios love simplicity in their titles tho hell look at tv - lost,friends,house,dexter,etc.

Not to mention that the logo and posters did a piss poor job of selling the movie, and didn't play up the actual premise. Actually, the marketing for that movie was terrible across the board. As for Jack Ryan, I'm sure the can market it well if they emphasize Pine, Hardy, and Costner.

They should've totally ripped off Indiana Jones. John Carter and the Martian Princess, John Carter and the War for Mars, something like that.

Agreed so much. The posters would market themselves, Tom Cruise being all badass on the poster, the title I.E. Killing Fields and then the tagline would be "The blistering new Jack Reacher thriller". Kind of like they've been doing with pulp fiction from back in the Phillip Marlowe days to today with Jack Reacher and Nick Stone.

Anyway, about the film itself, I have a very strange relationship with Tom Clancy's works, his writing is sometimes terrible, sometimes masterful, but his stories are always cracking and addictive.
