He has the look for it and for 90+% of movie goes that is enough. The context of Bond's supposed heritage or social class means nothing to them when it comes to deciding to go see a film and that's what Sony would take away.

Besides Elba is a good actor, so it's not like his look would even be the only reason he'd be cast in the role.

And Back to Bond's heritage isn't it a known fact that Fleming himself changed Bond's back-story to fit the actor who was playing him in Connery?

So it's not like Bond's heritage was some set-in stone gospel from the get go.

Lawd! Some make it seem like we are asking for 4ft black man with no talent. If Craig was dripped in chocolate, he would be Elba. Plain and simple. The book readers would be pissed, but the GA don't care.

Elba is too old now though.

I find that people who say they want diverse changes made to well established characters still have a line they don't want crossed which often makes them appear to be hypocrites. Why not an overweight Superman that people can relate to, or a gay James Bond, a transgendered Spider-Man, Batman with prosthetic limb, a four foot Wonder Woman? Why should open minded diversity basically end up meaning to change a white characters color? If Hollywood wants to make well established characters more diverse than they better go all the way because there's a lot of people not being represented like they should be, not just black people.

Or an hermaphrodite Squirrel Girl

If that were the case, Annie would be 70% fresh on RT's tomatometer and 80% and up on the Audience Score plus debut at no. 1.

As it stands, the film's a dud as its primed for Razzie noms for 2015 and its currently getting slaughtered by the Hobbit and Night at the Museum 3 in its opening weekend

How about the film just being ****?

You're crazy to think Elba wouldn't hit a home run with great material.

Since you enjoy skinnydipping the the river Denial, I hearby start my campaign for John Cho as Alex Cross and George Lopez as Jason Bourne. Because "**** logic and common sense!", right?

Lawd. My choice of Elba isn't about just simply changing race. HE is the black Bond, if there ever were to be one. He has all the requirements to do so, if the character were ever to change race, which I've admitted is unlikely, but you can't simply add a latino or asian guy to some random without making some kind of sense.

I like how you just gave a random latino or asian choice though. Elba isn't random. He would make sense, if they were looking at a black dude. Lopez would not.

At the age range he's in, he'd make a more formidable M than Bond since the position revolving door from Messervey, Hargreaves ( his first name could be Mortimer or Martin for all we know to explain away Robert Brown), Mawedsby/Mansfield to Gareth Mallory

Most definitely. He is way past it now. But he would kill in the role 10 years ago.

How about a woman as Bond? Or, are all of you sexist pigs?

People only give a crap about Bond's heritage when they're fishing for reasons why a totally valid choice like Idris Elba shouldn't play him.

How about his age ? He will be about 50 when Craig is done. So unless they have him film an entire Trilogy all at once. His age makes things hard for the long term

Bond should like other men because his sexuality doesn't matter.

Elba would be a great Bond. But some will bash him playing the character due to his race.

Bond is a Universe though where they can come up with a new 00 agent & if popular enough spin him off. Why change Bond specifically just because they can ?

Thus my Elba as M suggestion

Hypothetical question: Its 1954; you're a TV executive. Would you tell Ian Fleming to his face that Bond should be American knowing full well he's dead against such a change? Because that's what went down when CBS did their adaptation of Casino Royale

An actor is always picked apart on these boards. Height, weight, hair color, eye color, muscle definition, length of arms, chin shape, chest hair, facial hair , voice, accents, age.
