Guardians of the Galaxy James gunn fired!!!

Just to be clear, he deleted 10,000 posts, not 10,000 posts about rape and pedophilia. Essentially, he was trying to delete a span of several years, not looking through those texts to see what they were.

Eh, since he hasn't actually criticized Disney's decision to fire him, this seems completely consistent with what he wrote there.

I'm glad to see someone point that out in regards to the number of tweets deleted.

What James Gunn was is a troll. He wanted to shock people and provoke reactions. That was his thing. He pushed buttons and in our society child rape is just about the biggest possible button.

I'm certain that the entire point was to be as disgusting as possible. Not to share his true thoughts about those things.

This is another solid point that some people are missing.

Trolling and joking can still get you fired from your job

But why would his mind go there to that same well multiple times in the first place?

People may want to shock others, but if he keeps making comments about it and other kinds of jokes as if it's the most natural thing for him to do, then it seems to suggest that his heart is full of that stuff. His mouth merely speaks what his heart is full of. It's going to leak out in some way because he can't help himself.

True. I've just seen people imply or say that he actually supports what he wrote, which would be million times worse.

I think he kept using that well because it kept working. And I think he said that those tweets came from anger and he wanted to show ugly things in world.

And yeah, his mind can go to really dark places. Most people can't think like that and that's good. I do think he was unhealthy back then, but more in a "humanity sucks and I want people to remember that"-way, instead of "I want to rape children, and I can't help telling about it"-way.

If anything that should have made more self-aware
I think it may explain why he had no problem openly joking about such a taboo subject. Because for him, it was never taboo.

Ah well that's what I get for not reading.

Yes just because you joke about it doesn't mean you're about it

Of course, but being accused of being a paedophile over jokes as some have done isn't rational.

If you make the same racist "jokes" over and over, it's perfectly rational to think there's some underlying racism going on or else you wouldn't find it "funny".

A lot of his tweets didn't even come off as "jokes" IMO. They had no punchline. Is saying you want to rape or have sex with young kids supposed to be inherently funny? Where's the joke?

"Joke" is in that saying something like that is horrible. Then you say it anyway and people get shocked.

It's not my type of humor, but my good friend likes to pretend that he is a terrible person.

I think from this point forward, Disney will be extra careful when they hire someone, particularly a position as important as a director, and vetting their social media history before that person is hired. I don't think this will reflect badly on Disney because they got on top of it before it becomes a headline news, though.

I don't really get how people can defend Gunn's tweets. Sure they were a while ago but he was still 40 when he posted them, not some kid.

He acted all high and mighty on social media only to find his old, disgusting tweets.

But we don't have proof that these were made "over and over". The screenshots I've seen range in dates from 2008-2012. Not all of them are in reference to rape or paedophilia either. We also don't know the context of most of them.

Whedon deserved to be fired
Gunn didn't deserve to be fired

He was an immature idiot who had a weird sense of humor but sadly many years later he has to deal with the fallout

Uh, did you read the tweets? There were literally rape and pedophilia comments over and over. The proof is that they exist. We do know the context for many of them because you can see who he's replying to. Many of them were just statements. No context would have made them less offensive.

What amount is the limit for you? There was clearly enough of a pattern.

Even comedians can cross the line. Saying it's a "joke" is no excuse. Anyone can claim anything they do is a "joke". It's completely subjective.

Plenty of people didn't think what Logan Paul did was just a joke.

There's a lot of cherry picking going on.

Maybe we are all a bit biased because of the micro-world of Marvel movies we live in, but in the greater picture is not *that* big of a deal. A person just got fired. That is all.

But it does point to a new paradigm that we're experiencing lately, with all these people being accountable for bad behaviour. Is that good, is that bad? Apologies don't mean anything anymore? Should people be judged for some stupid sh** that was said on a saturday night? What's the amount degree tolerable of "outrageous"? That one really is the bigger picture that should be discussed.

In my opinion, I think is good. Is good that this conversation is happening because it is good for the future, the society and respecting each other. But it's a conversation that has to apply to everyone. If you point your finger at someone, you better be clean yourself. It's an interesting conversation about social media in the 21st century. It had to happen at some point.

Most people will laugh along with the joke no matter the topic as long as it’s funny. Those tweets honestly weren’t even close to funny. They sounded like something a 13-year-old says to his friends to try and be funny.

We've seen a couple dozen of tweets out of thirty thousand or whatever his tweet count is. Not every one them reference rape or paedophilia. Just because we see who he is replying to doesn't give us context. We're not seeing the other part of the conversation.

One of his tweets was, "Burned my mouth on an enchilada. F'n Mexicans". Is that enough to claim he's a racist?

What does the percentage of tweets matter? That's like saying it's okay to be racist so long as you buffer it with other topics.

It's enough to say that's a racist comment. Context doesn't save everything. And like I said, it's on him to provide the context. That was also his choice to leave out. You're assuming context saves everything or that there was more context other than the tweet itself.

Why did Gunn close his Twitter account? He was fired by Disney. Does he still expect further repercussions by leaving it open? Or is he trying to avoid people sending him hate mail now?

 You argue he's a paedophile based on what you think is a high percentage of tweets referencing the subject. He made these jokes "over and over" so he's a paedophile.

I'm not saying context saves his comments, only that we don't have it. It make a difference, it may not. One of the tweets was a joke on turning romcom titles into something terrible for example.

Gunn is probably in a sad place right now. The honest truth is if the man had deleted the freaking tweets years ago we wouldn't be having this discussion. He has to have lost tens of millions of dollars in GOTG 3 and the Sony project. I wouldn't want to be on twitter after that either.

You know what, I think thats why i'm so angry with the situation. James Gunn seems like a reasonably smart and socially conscience person and for him to say he was sorry for those tweets and be stupid enough to leave them there is insane. People want to blame Disney or some crazy conservative but with a few keystrokes Gunn could still be directing GOTG 3.

Jesus-freaking-christ! How do you go around pulling up old tweets and forget to delete pedo tweets in your own timeline. I feel like there has to be some autism there somewhere.

Nope. Not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying his tweets are pedophilic and rapey. Even as "jokes" he's endorsing them on some level. That's damning and enough to warrant offense.

There lies the mountain of irony of Gunn. Not too long ago he was advocating having people mine the accounts of people on the political right to look for offensive content.

One would think there is a teachable moment somewhere in this situation.

Yeah, if you plan on throwing stones at least make sure the other person ain't got no rocks to throw back at you.
